What I think also gets missed with Ace is just how powerful his rhythm playing is, too. When Gene and Paul are running around the stage, it falls to the lead guitarist and the drummer in Kiss to hold the songs together. Ace's tone was also excellent.

Who was influenced by Ace Frehley? Here's a little list - Dimebag Darrell, Zakk Wylde, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, and I could add to the list until I'm blue in the face. Now he's probably not considered the best guitarist but the most influential. If you listen to Kiss Alive listen to all of his leads. He's got great solos on that album. No Ace is not a shredder at all, but in his early years he can play some really great riffs and solos. a couple great riffs- parasite, cold gin. Pentatonic riff that's in love gun I could go on and on. Thanks for the video David!

Great lesson. As a little kid, I’m pretty sure I wore out Destroyer and Rock and Roll Over. Those were the first two Kiss albums I owned and they were pure, visceral energy. Your closing remarks are spot on and for me, those ideas also apply to singers.
@chriscampbell91913 жыл бұрын
Ace sometimes is denigrated as not being a top player, but I don't think the guy ever played a non-kickass solo. And his playing had everything one wanted or needed in rock guitar in the 1970's: blasting, pentatonic/minor/chromatic runs, a lot of super fast and super hot pull-offs and hammer-ons, a ton of punch to every note, and just enough heaviness, flash and grittiness to fit the style of the music that Kiss played. Add the fact that he played a Les Paul through Marshalls, it was full-on, classic 70's rock and roll. I was more into Mick Ronson and Marc Bolan, but I remember the first few Kiss albums were full of good rockers, and I learned a few of those riffs, just like every other guy (or girl) with a guitar in their hands did back in the day. Great vid here, as per usual.

Seriously, that picture of Ace in the 'Evolution Of KISS' booklet in Alive II was the final straw to me switching from drums to guitar in 1978. That pic of ace holding his Les Paul being bathed in light - that was it for me! I wanted to be up there and gave up the drums for guitar.
