I love the two advanced posters but lets be honest, if i do anything a bit arty and original, clients go mental and ask me to change it for something much more simple. So i do basic stuff that clients love and i do arty graphic design stuff for myself, so that nobody bothers me and my creativity. It is tough to deal with clients. Of course some clients are great and want original stuff, but the vast majority have terrible taste, that's why many designers get stuck at beginner level, if they dont do other creative stuff on the side...

Perhaps comparing similar social media posts between clothing brands using beginner/advanced GD would have been more effective.

The travel ad looks typical of American style graphic design. I've worked with a couple of print shops and newspapers, and that is what they want. They don't want anything inspired because Americans don't want to think. They want to be told everything. They don't see graphic design as art. They think of it as just an ad. They don't want any futuristic or original fonts. They don't want a consistent color scheme. They want blatantly obvious advertising. The tackier the better. Clients actually say Can you use a bunch of different fonts please? They don't understand sophistication. They want simple and to the point.
@SatoriGraphics6 ай бұрын
Even the 'don't want to think' aspect falls short, because the design is too convoluted. If the idea is to target short attention and quick messaging, then a refined and simple design would be more effective
@DucMinh3226 ай бұрын
@@SatoriGraphics But then the "refined and simple" design would not be the style that the clients order. As @nxs6musique140 said, they want simple and to the point. After all, design/art is a subjective matter, what looks best for you may appear to be ugly/ineffective to others. I bet you don't want to waste time educating them that the up-to-trend is better than template-like design.
@jarroddowalter6 ай бұрын
Design is not always art though and in certain cases it is just an advertisement. You are correct though that it doesn't mean as designers we shouldn't be following good heuristic principles to clearly communicate the desired message but that is on us to teach those to our clients who are lacking in that expertise.
@casdragon_59396 ай бұрын
I agree to a point, I think it depends on how the design is being used. For example I'm a designer in the insurance world and our design are very straight foreword and corporate looking. The "pro" design would never fly and many would think that person is the beginner haha. The "beginner" version (other than the typos) is much closer to what I do on a daily basis (although I'd still make plenty of changes) and is more acceptable for my clients. It has nothing to do with being an "American" design . . . I worked for Asian clients (mostly in China and Japan) that preferred the "beginner" style as well. It all depends on what fits their company voice/branding/message.
@gloriabartolome31235 ай бұрын
@@casdragon_5939 Yeah exactly, most clients are not interested with arty, outside of the box posters, they are used to templates that we see everywhere and thats what they want...

Hey man!, first of all, gotta tell you that I love your videos and they are very informative; I've been a graphic designer for almost 20 years now and I am still finding tips in your videos. Secondly, when doing a comparison like this, I would suggest taking the 'Beginner' design and transform it into a 'Advanced' design; why?, because the subject matter in one is quite different from the other, the assets, the market and the goal were never the same. It's like comparing apples to oranges. While transforming a beginner design into a advanced one would be a more informative and fair comparison. Again, I mean this with the utmost respect to you and your content. Cheers!

At minute 3:57, the blue, black and white flyer (ADVANCED). Unless my display is off, that blue heading is the same color as its background making it extremely hard to read. Also, for me at least, the black text against that tone of blue doesn't have enough contrast for me to read easily.

Great video 👍 I also think that , but in reality, sometimes designer design as consumer paying perspective, if a product that Target audience is middle class or lower middle class consumer so it can be considered. But if a professional design comes , people judge it look it is look very premium, i can't afford it. That why i think the most matter is knowing Target audience.

This is design thinking and the correct way to approach these types of problems. The advance design put forward in this video essay are typically only good for designers trying to demonstrate technical ability and signaling their taste to other designers.

I am not too strong on my Graphic Design but since as part of a larger team I teach the tools part of Adobe products to students one very big issue I notice in new designers is: - Clutter - Overusage of saturation - A lacking sense of harmony both in the elements of form and color. - No understanding of vertical lining and negative space.

@SatoriGraphics6 ай бұрын
Try not to think that way. Instead think why aren't your skills where you want them to be right now (weaknesses), and turn them into strengths. We all at some point get jealous and admire better work, but you can either use that as fuel to improve, or negativity to demotivate you. The only thing stopping you is you 👍🏻

Try deconstructing an example of a good graphic design that caught your eye. Analyze it why you like it, maybe even copy it as a practice exercise. Eventually you'll start to understand the elements of what makes great graphic art work and you'll start to make your own unique work.

As if often the case, it depends on the tier of clients you work with. Of course this wouldn't happen when Apple or Nike award their design team or agency a project. But also mid to higher level clients in general don't do that

Idk about this one your examples here is like comparing apples and oranges it's not a good contrast of beginner and advance. One has motion graphics the others are static which each serve their purpose. On top of that one is in English while the other is in Japanese two different styles of design based on language. Sometimes simplicity is enough and sometimes chaotic is ok it all depends on your target audience

Adherence to Design Principles.
@jarroddowalter6 ай бұрын
Unpopular opinion as a working designer: all examples shown are just different levels of beginner. Adding modern noise and animation doesn't inherently advance the design just demonstrates technical ability and attention to trend. In your beginner poster example, you point out that it's use of many different typefaces and weights is an indicator of beginner design but in your advanced example it is using the same amount of variety in type so it's not a helpful comparison. Advanced design is measured by how clearly you are able to communicate your client's message to their intended audience.
