As a beginner art can be a little scary, but listening to your "calm" approach to it (watercolor is loose, not needing expensive things to make great art, pen-watercolor-ink order doesn't matter, etc.) and general pedagogic skills and great tips makes me dare to approach it (in my case watercolor and ink) and love how not-in-control and faulty it can look. A lot of people can be so opinionated regarding art ("Do this, don't do that" attitude) which makes me anxious, because I can't really tell the difference between a "good way" or a "bad way". You're the ideal teacher Alphonso!

Very helpful video. Your content is top notch! One observation from a beginner: while initially I wasn’t confident about the finished work, when the paint fully dried, the image took on a subtly different quality. I was pleased with the result. Followed your method. 👍

thank you for sharing the pencil sharpening....your method is a lot like what my dad used to do. he would sit in the evening and sharpen them all with sandpaper and a pocket knife, he did say he was whittling his pencils.

Alphonso, I am someone who has greatly benefitted from your thoughts on technique and perspective. Especially when I have "artists block" or trouble being creative. I have always been looked to as the artist within my peer group yet my only skill is a natural ability to capture detail and draw detailed pictures that I see. But I have trouble with general skills with classic styles and the ability to understand the principles that allow one to grow in skill. Your straight forward concepts of how to see light and values has been tremendously helpful for me to grow and think creatively. Cheers. BTW, I think it would be cool to see you do a vid where you draw something on the fly by taking suggestions at random from subscribers.

I found this to be very helpful. I had a preconceived idea about whether or not to use a pencil, whether to leave pencil visible, and in what order to use pencil (if at all) ink and paint. In watching your video I learned that each way has its special charm and, what the heck, do it the way it makes the most sense. .... A tip you might want to mention: I've found some of my pen tips too big for the size of the drawing, with the resulting image coming out looking more like a coloring book illustration than a nice painting with highlighting. At the size I'm working, I've become a fan of an 001 or XF. the 005s tend to be too thick. ALSO, I've "discovered" the Staedtler 003 mm color set. The ink is water soluble BUT after the watercolor is dry, these are great for fine highlights. They come in a lot of colors, however, I've found their 20 pen set just right for me.
