What I did to get rid of that "sketchbook pressure", was that when i just got it, i went in and crumpled up or folded some pages, ripped some pages or left tears in them, used it as a footstool and shoved it around on the floor. This really made it a piece of junk to me, and now my mind is totally and completely free to draw anything, i haven't felt any fear, ever. I also stopped calling it a sketchbook, but rather a doodlebook. :)

After looking at many beginner videos I can't tell how how refreshing it's been to listen to your different perspectives on drawing. One of your first comments about having the right mind-set and attitude got me hooked. Hearing you say that drawing is not just about drawing was inspiring. I have one Staedtler 2B pencil and some Derwent and Crayola, yes Crayola coloured pencils and I will start with these because for me, starting is more important than waiting till I've collected all the "right" tools. I notice that you use Staedtler yourself, also Bic. And do you sharpen your pencil with a knife? (Looks that way! Classic!) It's inspiring to see that there are no boundaries so I'm now more willing to give it a try. Thank you Alphonso for the encouragement, and for your passion. It's catching!
@avajarvis56397 жыл бұрын
Danuta Phipps It’s a good idea not to wait, plus despite Crayola not being in any way archival, that brand has the absolute best pigment load of its competitors in that price range. It’s a great place to start and has stuck around for a reason. Plus as my artist friend puts it, it’s important to not get overly attached with our early work. I think Crayola colored pencils are the best to start with, and their watercolor pencils are also great. They even do pastels these days, though I haven’t tried them. (I still use Crayola stuff to play with these days.)

Ava, thank you for your reply, and encouragement. It's nice to hear that the cheaper end of the pencil market is not belittled, knowing of course that you pay for quality. I am just like a chick cracking open its shell, pondering everything artistically new, exploring creativity.

Well, my art tutor isn't like most other artists. ^_^ Many artists (pros or not, teachers or not) will encourage you to spend your wallet on stuff that either doesn't matter at this point on your journey, or that doesn't even matter period. Thus far, I've found a litmus test: artists who don't belittle (at all) using ballpoint pen AND actively use it have been the most useful for me to learn from in the long term-and so far that's pretty much just my art tutor, Alphonso Dunn, and John Muir Laws. (A note, because someone else has asked me-my art tutor isn't taking students.)
@lindseym25536 жыл бұрын
The one tip I would add, that he didn't say but demonstrated in the video is to not be afraid to use the tools you have on hand. I love using some very nice woodless graphite pencils when I sketch but whatever I have on hand is just fine if I'm inspired. It can always be done with "proper" tools at a later date, and that way you're both training yourself to follow- not ignore- inspiration, and you're still practicing too

As someone who sketches every day I can say that having a personal sketchbook is absolutely necessary. My personal sketchbook is like an extension of myself; I use it to study, try new things, get down ideas, jot down important or everyday moments, practice and just have fun! I do have other sketchbooks specifically for studying and such but my personal sketchbook is by far the most used. I used to be scared to finish a sketchbook but now I must sketch on every inch of my book otherwise I will end up with piles upon piles of sketchbooks! I constantly find myself going back to my old sketchbooks filling in blank spaces and pages due to the lack of room for new books. XD

Just discovered your channel because your new workbook was recommend on The Mind of Watercolor KZbin channel. I am just discovering your thinking and teaching. I can say, I went to college when I was 49 to pursue art. I wish the teachers were as encouraging as you are. I took all the basic drawing classes and all life drawing classes. My best work was loose drawing with a dressed street model. I love texture and color and love to paint but my drawing is lacking. I have to discipline myself to really study drawing so my paintings can improve. Learning to see is the hardest. I am so spontaneous I just want to dive into the painting. I am almost 70 now and have sold some watercolors but time goes so fast I feel to be really good I would have had to do this work since a child. Thank you for using your energy and time to teach us who want to draw.

Nice to have the bullet points with time stamps to go back to but I highly recommend watching (or listening) to the entire video. He made EXCELLENT points that I wouldn't have thought of if I had only heard the title of each tip. I learned a lot. Realized that I was feeling ashamed or worried about something I was doing that he actually recommended. Such as keeping more than one sketchbook. I have so many it'll be a miracle for them to be finished in my lifetime (but I have two main ones and a couple of watercolor ones...oh and toned paper ones ugh, pastel paper sketchbooks, etc). And another was to work on more than one drawing at a time which I definitely do. I have several that I switch back and forth between and have struggled to keep it down to just those because I want to try something else. I have limited myself a LOT within these things he actually recommends to do because I thought I was making things harder on myself. I wouldn't be able to "finish" a sketchbook, which shouldn't be my goal. My goal should be to learn and practice and explore my skills and aquire more....in turn, my sketchbooks would be getting finished a whole lot faster anyway because I am actually working in them and not feeling totally blocked because my subconscious "rules" I have aren't being followed or whatever. I struggle like CRAZY trying to draw small. Even when I set borders on my page to draw inside I bust out of them and off the page. It happens in Moleskine sketchbooks 8" x 5.5" and smaller. I CAN typically manage the 8" x 5.5" but I just ordered super mini sketchbooks the size of the palm of my hand and I have one in my car that I almost never drive in case I have to wait somewhere and it's like 5" × 3" and have nothing in it except one ballpoint of my dog because I made myself use pen so I wouldn't erase it. I'm hoping these small sketchbooks will help me find a way to bring down the size of my drawings because otherwise they wind up being so big they take forever to finish and I feel they have to be great in that case. Anyway, I always go on and on. It's part of my process. If you actually read all of this I hope you found some comfort in my frustrations knowing that you aren't the only one feeling a certain way. That's a big thing this video did for me and it gave me a ton of helpful reasons why what I have been doing is actually good for my process and it's ok to make a mess. I also took notes. It helps me to write things down. My memory sucks and just writing it makes it stick. So there went another full spread of my large sketchbook to more notes. I'm so glad because every time I do that, I move forward and gain a ton of ground. I'm also working in Alphonso's book and workbook. They are fantastic and I highly recommend them. "Pen & Ink Drawing, A Simple Guide" and the workbook that goes with it of the same name. So so so good!

All my sketchbooks are random XD No specific pages, no define styles, no nothing sames haha XD studies: studies combined with my ideas, concept, doodles, realism, cartoons, eyes, monsters, animals,... it helps me a lot to expand my knowledge . I usually first either reference or get the poses from my mind and than the opposite (reference and mind, mind and then reference to check). I rarely make masterpieces unlike today. It's not amazing; but an extension of my weird random doodles I liked. I just sketch ahead, almost daily because I'm full of weird ideas. I get inspired a lot and I hope it stays that way (even when I'm depressed as of lately, I feel like drawing helped me)

Now that I've watched so many of your videos, I think I figured out why you are so popular. You are very down-to-earth in your approach to drawing. I think so many other video instructors are quite prone to thumping their chest, 'see how talented I am!?' kind of mentality. When the truth of the matter is, everyone stumbled especially at the beginning of their artistic journey. Maybe what I am saying is that for you, drawing in and of itself is fulfilling, regardless of how 'imperfect' the results are. Look at kids' drawings! They could be faulted for all kinds of errors in perspective, proportion, etc. But that was secondary in importance. You help facilitate re-connecting to that joy.

Regarding themes: i have been studying portrait drawing for the last few years, but put myself on a challenge recently. To learn portraits, one must know the skull, so im doing a 100 skull challenge. As it progressed, i started to get a little bored with it, then i did some in charcoal, white charcoal on black paper, or some in oil pastel, some in ink and crosshatch work, some in watercolor..and my favourite is always graphite. Having fun! I have 20 left to do, and its taken a few months but I have learned so much. I need to get your books on inking. The theme thing works really well as it removes that “what to draw” issue. ...and i have a travel kit that i take to work...do some drawing during my lunch break.

Thanks for this Alphonso! I would love to see more daily drawing tips. My problem is that often, it takes me a while to learn certain things. I do see improvement but I would love more targeted practice. Drawing on my own, without references, I see that I still have too many difficulties imagining how I should draw it. I am trying to come up with some kind of lesson plan currently to learn anatomy. if you have any tips on these things, that would be awesome too. Targeted practice is my weakness, I feel I'm just repeating the same thing and then forgetting it. To me, the most important part is about “learn to enjoy the process of drawing”. Your state of mind is one of the most important aspects of drawing. Indigenous Australian art is known for its highly distinctive style and is the oldest traditional art style on the planet. Generally, the images are incredibly complex and involve drawing a series of dots that eventually build up an image. One artist spoke about his creative process in a documentary I watched. Basically, he described how he must prepare himself before he creates and enters a trancelike state. Why? It's like he said, try and draw a line of dots, one after another and evenly spaced. If you're not in the right state of mind, you will make a mistake. So, he must detach himself and enter into a trancelike state. In this state of mind, instinct takes over. It made total sense to me at the time, as I enter the same state of mind when I write or draw. It's a magical experience and I feel blessed since I've had the benefit of experiencing this with two parts of my art. However, I must say, writing has a deeper impact, personally speaking. When searching for the best description, in order to explain my writing process, eventually I found the right words. "I free my mind as I speak from the heart and I allow my soul to find the words on my behalf." When people say they're "in the zone", they are describing the same thing. When I sketch, I have a similar description as my writing. "With an open mind, my feelings and passions are released, in order to contain them on the canvas in the form of an image. I trust in my soul to guide my hand and capture the image in my mind with the greatest accuracy." Hope this inspires.

Yes, I would love to see the other 7 tips. And thank you for linking the white ink pens. It's suprising how few white ink pens/markers there are.

I'm glad you posted this. Thank you. Lately I've been seeing a lot of finished sketchbooks and I look for the sketches, not just the finished drawing. Don't get me wrong they are wonderful to look at but I like to see other artist's processes as it shows how the completed work came to unfold for them. It's like looking at a math equation with the answer already given without the work showing. Still, much respect to all thise that post. I like how you explain things. It has been a while since I've read your pen and ink book and just found out you have the work book. I'm impatiently anticipating its arrival this coming Friday. I've worked in graphite, oil, acrylic, charcoal but pen and ink eludes me ha ha. Please continue your great books and channel.

Man your lessons at the best!!! I follow them assiduously and they are clear and touch on questions Ive been asking myself for years! I'm a 3D artist and, though I can sculpt, I was never good at drawing volumes. I recently tried my first figure drawing and I was amazed that it looked good. I'm pretty sure it has a lot to do with the fact I practice meditation, patience is key... Anyway I know all there is to know about 3D lighting and shading, with over 20 years experience, but only with the help of an expensive computer, electricity, screen, software and bugs... It it SO liberating to produce volume with a pen and paper, and so calming! There are many tutorials out there, many of them are really good in their own way, but yours are consistently relevant and beautiful. And it is fascinating to hear you describe what basically is 3D, xyz reference systems, diffuse and specular light, bounced light, texture etc... but in totally different, organic terms. Basically, from your brain to canvas, rather than computer screen to brain. Which is good to remind us where 3D came from originally: guys like you. Thank you for your time and generosity!

Best advice yet - I tended to sort of procrastinate before undertaking a full size painting for fear of failure - so liberating to remember that we draw because we love to draw and now I do it for myself, everyday - of course I am a better artist as a result - you are so right - attitude is everything

What I really love about this video is he demonstrates the techniques he talks about, versus just finishing an already-started piece for the entire video that has nothing to do with the topic.

Dude, from these tips, yes I'd watch a video of the other seven you mentioned. I'm originally a graphite artist and branched out into various mediums but haven't really gone back to graphite for most of these reasons. Ty you for the tips. I appreciate it.

Thankyouthankyou for showing the crappy notes and scribbles sketchbook! That's what most of mine look like and I thought I was doing it wrong! But I grow so much. I just recently started a separate one for more careful work, but if I don't feel in careful and certain mood, or I need to capture or doodle ideas- I go for the messy ones. Thanks for this video

omg this video is so relatable! i just bought a butt ton of sketchbooks because it took me soooo long to finally let myself be like "kay, I don't need to show anyone this sketchbook, it will be for my eyes only, so no matter how ugly or butt something looks, it's okay, it will show as improvement over time" i splurged and bought various sizes and textures and series to make sure I have no excuse of like "maybe if i had this type or that size i could execute it better blahblahblah" and so now I'm learning which types and sizes I prefer for certain times and locations and mediums I've been sketching and dabbling so much, I'm like "wow this was so so worth it, I'll probably need to buy more soon, but now I have an idea of what i prefer or what to try next!" all this drawing made me realize that i was so driven when i was younger, i would put in so many hours per day and was open to try a variety of different 2d and 3d mediums, and it didn't matter what i had on hand, just a pencil and paper, and do gestures, blind contour, etc of anything around me. so i hope to be like that again. gosh i feel dumb for letting all that go to waste. im lookin at my old drawings like how tf i did that? i did that?! lol :c
