I think another option for your mistake that I saw in my head was add two smaller shelves. The upper long piece would have the shorter shelf offset to the left and the bottom long piece had one offset to the right. This might work better not cutting them as short as you did or at all but that's a personal choice.

Hey Brother.! This was great find, and a fun project. Great job all around. At the beginning of the video, I thinking how cool it would look with 2 stabilizer slats on the back of it. This design also be made as 'rustic' or 'primitive' as you may want to make it. Seems like hickory is an overlooked media, except by furniture makers.
