i think a video series going over all the parts and what they do would also be helpful, since the in game tutorials don't do a good job of describing it. great video btw very helpful cheers

Excellent video and explanation! Too many videos out there with incorrect or inaccurate information but this video is very well done and accurate!

I literally had an exam on gear last week and already forgot half of the calculations behind this, but the game really feels accurate to what I've learned in my classes

Perfect timing! I'm just now getting started and am at the point now where i have to introduce shifting. The wide variety of gearbox designs I have seen online are amazing! But daunting. My main problem is by the time I get through building gears that actually work right, My 63 year old brain forgets how I did it. To duplicate it I almost have to start designing from scratch again. Saving progress along the way is a time/lifesaver! I suspect my brain is too small to hold the formulas...and my bong too big to do the math! 🤓

That first design big gear powering small one is capable of completing almost 75 percent of the career wit 2 igncore 250 and 1 igncore 125 engine which is easy to build even in the first stages of the game

I just put up a thread on reddit on the subject, might as well mention it here as well. Small gear (S) = 8 cogs Medium gear (M) = 24 cogs Large gear (L) = 40 cogs Planetary gear up (PG+) = Ratio 2.3x or 230% of incoming RPM. Planetary gear down (PG-) = Ratio 0.435 or 43.5% of incoming RPM. Gear ratios between S, M and L look like this: SM 0.33x, 33% SL 0.2x, 20% MS 3x, 300% ML 0.6x, 60% LS 5x, 500% LM 167% PG+ 230% PG- 43.5% And if you add onto that, line, a variation of either PG-, PG+ or Neutral (1:1), We will get these values! Enjoy. Transmission RPM conversion rate are: 1. 8.7% PG-SL 2. 14% PG-SM 3. 20% SL 4. 26% PG-ML 5. 33% SM 6. 43.5% PG- 7. 46% PG+SL 8. 66% ML 9. 72% PG-LM 10. 76% PG+SM 11. 130% PG-MS 12. 138% PG+ML 13. 166% LM 14. 217% PG-LS 15. 230% PG+ 16. 300% MS 17. 368% PG+LM 18. 500% LS 19. 690% PG+MS 20. 1150% PG+LS We also have these combinations but considering just how much fewer alternatives we get within a huge span shows us that these gears aren't as fittable within this gearbox transmission. It requires twice as many cogs. 2500% LS LS 900% MS MS 4% LS LS 11% SM SM 36% ML ML 200% LM LM

Thats an awesome lot of numbers and % that mean absolutely nothing to beginners. What do you mean with small gear has 8 cogs? Do you mean 8 teeth? In which case in discord the devs said the gears are S=8 M=10 L=16, i have also seen other players state the ratio is S=4 M=5 L=8 or something like that. Everybody happy to throw numbers around not understanding people have no idea what yall are saying.. By all means have this stuff to people who get it and like a deep dive, but on a basics post... really...??

Those are not the actual in game numbers. It was driving me crazy because like you, I counted the teeth to figure out my gearbox but then the behavior in game was absolutely not matching up with the visible gear ratios. Try it out for yourself: make a 2 gear car with 1-1 transmission for gear 1 and a large-small transmission for gear 2. Because 40/8=5 the second gear should have 5x the top speed and 1/5th the Nm of first gear. But the actual top speed will be far lower than expected. It turns out, the game uses some arbitrary value for gearing which does not match the actual teeth ratio that we can see in game. I believe this is a game balancing decision based on the desire to have different gear sizes on the grid but manageble ratios, but I think it's a major educational miss from the devs because it stops people from fully understanding what is going on when they put the gears together.

The best gear box I have made, for all the races in the game, is quite compact, involves one planetary gear, 2 corner gears, 3 medium gears, and 3 small gears. It gets up to 340kmph which is faster than any race really gets. It allows you to build small and light, because small and light = fast, since more power cant make up in the turns or for decelerating. I power it with 2 Blaze 1000s, use small race wheels, and small suspension with 8 large wings and its been my fastest track car so far. The lighter you get it once you have sufficient power, the better. 110 hp (The turbo hurts more than it help for the big engines in my opinion due to wind resistance), is all you need.

maybe you already know this but maybe it helps. I heard somewhere that the ratios of the cogs are 2, 5 and 7, small to large.

Lego technic 101. Is it cuz kids are learning whether or not they are a box or a shoe or any combination of the two in school nowadays without the risk of having a board eraser chucked at them or has this comment just seen me over the "Gen X" threshold into the realm of being a "Boomer" now. Lol. it's my birthday on the 29th so... Great teachings woody good on ya. ;) _Oh.. I was of the Lego technical age when the parts were slightly limited and dad was a locomotive diesel fitter for the NCB so I suppose him teaching me what was happening with the gears helped cuz I'd never have the patients to read about it_

I can't lie, this is more for my reference than anything else, learning this stuff has been fun but I still get lost along the way with rpm and torque and everything else 😅. As long as big skinny goes fast for long and small skinny goes quick.. I can fudge the rest to get some form of result 🤣🤷🏼♂️

How do we use the planet gears properly?
@wo0dyКүн бұрын
Planet gear is a 2.5 ratio, so if something spins 1x on the small end, the larger output spins 2.5x. use 2 axles not 1 all the way through. It also works reverse, so if the larger side is the input, the smaller side will spin slower meaning more torque
@mellowbug7 сағат бұрын
@wo0dy would you use it in a specific spot down in the power-line? After a certain gear or..?
