In the cybersecurity career field, there are so many different certifications to choose from, and the list keeps getting longer every day. At least every few years, there is a new certification to pursue, and the immediate first question I receive is, should you go for it? Many factors should determine which certifications to pursue and which ones you should avoid or prioritize lower on the list.

I'm currently a clerk in the federal gov't, trying to break into an IT role. Right now I'm studying for the Security+ and CEH, I actually did pass the CySA+ a couple years ago but it doesn't seem too sought after, at least for entry level positions.

I am debating myself between Comptia Security+ vs Blue Team Level 1. I feel like blue team level 1 is better as a beginner like myself. It gives you life time certification, and I think blue team level 1 is also focusing on more practical skills if I am not wrong and Comptia certifications expire after 3 years. So which one shall I choose first, I want both eventually. Comptia Security+ or Blue Team Level 1? Many thanks

Although you didn't give too much background beyond being a "beginner"...but I'll assume you are fairly early on in your career with little to no prior experience. I recommend grabbing my free eBook ( jongood.com/getstarted/ ) and looking at the included roadmap of skills and certifications to pursue. The Blue Team Level (BTL1) is an introductory certification for the SOC (Security Operations Center) NOT an introduction to the career field, which means it's a higher level of difficulty and assumes certain knowledge. BTL1 is a reasonable option once you have a solid foundation (i.e., after my roadmap).

Currently looking for work in IT as a recent grad, BSIT. What would be like the ideal next step for me, would it be to work on my network/security+? been 4 months since I moved to America so I don't know if my degree holds value here. I only have experience as a web development intern

I always recommend to grab my free eBook ( jongood.com/getstarted/ ) and start working through the roadmap. While you are completing the roadmap, start applying to all entry level help desk, IT, and cybersecurity jobs that list 0-3 years of experience and see what happens. Ultimately, it's not about the first job, but how well you can take whichever opportunity presents itself and leverage that to get where you want to be.

If you are a pentester, then OSCP is what you want. There arent a ton of pentester jobs in general, but most know the value of OSCP. it's tough

Penetration Testing isn't a "beginner" job, so there are steps before that, but certainly, if you have aspirations of landing that job, then yes, you absolutely need to have the OSCP on your roadmap as things stand today.

Hi, I am enrolled in ISC2 Cyber Security Entry Level Certification and about to complete it, although currently I am not in I.T field. What should be my second step? because I want to change my field towards Cyber Security. I have gone through your guide as well and do understand that ultimate goal should be CISSP, and after CC from ISC2 I will lookout for jobs in this field but again what certification should be my next step. The roadmap in my free eBook is what's going to be expected of you by employers, and that's what you should pursuit in the order provided. If you were to apply the CC to the roadmap it would be well before the actual starting point that I provide because it's not necessary and won't give you the foundation that you need...it's an introduction more than anything.

Unless somebody has a good reason to go with Azure, I tend to recommend AWS because it has the largest market share, but that's not to say learning Azure will somehow hurt you. I tell people to get to a professional level before they start venturing into a second cloud service provider so that they have enough employable skills to look attractive to employers.

There isn't really anything specific to PKI, at least not anything that has been accepted by the profession. The majority of the time, PKI training is built into other technologies, and typically, administering/managing it is just another responsibility that somebody has within a company, not a dedicated job. There's a lot of documentation out there about PKI, including several pieces on the Microsoft website: techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/ask-the-directory-services-team/designing-and-implementing-a-pki-part-i-design-and-planning/ba-p/396953

My advice typically applies to the entire career field, not just a specific geographic region. I have plenty of videos talking about degrees, but ultimately, it's not a firm requirement most of the time. However, it can help make you a more competitive candidate. Also, if you have long-term dreams of being a manager/director/CISO, having at least a bachelor's degree is highly recommended, and possibly a master's degree.
