Beginners Guide to Doing Airs - Shralp Stories EP. 27
Pro Surfer Kolton Sullivan's New Series called Tech Tips.
In this video we cover the foundation of how to learn and execute one of surfings most difficult maneuvers - The Aerial.
Going for a surf in the a.m. and reviewing that footage as well as other clips...we will talk about what wave is best, where to start your punt, and how to rotate your body when doing airs. #surfing #surf #educational

Dunno if you ever skated but you perform those airs really good if you never skated before. Saying this bc normally you'd need quite some skating hours under your belt to be able to do these tricks so if that grew out of your surfing.... some one should give you cigar for that ! Nube surfer here. I acutally just started surfing bc i'd like to skate waves... as i was a skater in my younger years, did half pipe, mine ramps and some street skating. Looking forward to more of your videos. Thanks for the tips !

I grew up doing every action sport you can think of from skate boarding riding motorcycles snowboarding and surfing. All of that played a part in how I surf and read waves these days.

Im also interested in this. I thought fin boxes had a pre set cant to them and was wondering if they are just bending the outside "supports" or the whole box.

Great tips Kolton ! Do you have to kinda jump for the lift ? Or stomp on your tail pad and wait for the projection , and then suck in your knees ? Ps, Are twin fins good for airs ?

Yeah push on your tail pad and wait for lift then bring your knees into your chest Yeah hi performance twin fins are super good for airs cuz they are more free feeling

how much does surfboard choice play into airs? im 90 kg riding 34-36l boards, mostly pu 6.0-6.4. would it be better to drop size down to a 5.8 eps twin fin type board (twin fin plus trailer) going for down the line speed while keeping my usual volume?
@used_surf

Surfboard choice does factor in as far as gaining speed but the weight of the board is not much of a factor. I would focus on gaining good down the line speed and working on technique as well

What about the bottom turn? Should I be deep off the bottom or more of a shallow down th line ? You mention about doing a top turn above the lip; I find my best top turns come off a deeper bottom turn but if I try a punt off a deep bottom turn I feel I’m losing to much speed and not getting that pop projection.

shallow bottom turn

It depends on what kind of air you're trying to do. A shallower bottom turn would work best for straight airs, although a deeper bottom turn will be best to coil up for an air reverse or an ally-oop. If you're doing a deep bottom turn you need a lot of speed going into it and strong legs to withstand the g-force. (And a race-trac traction pad for better grip👍🤘)

What you don't mention which is way more critical than anything you explained, and I know why you don't explain it is because you're unaware you're doing it. When you pump your back foot is normally placed forward of the tail pad. This is better drive when you need speed but the last pump you'll slide that foot back against the wedge of the pad and compress your legs. Having that foot against the pad lets you whip the board to an air-rev where your front foot will naturally find the front of the board for the landing

Yep. What your describing is evident if you watch pros surf. Pumping, there foot is up a little and when prepping for a maneuver they step their foot back to the kick.
