Thanks for the video. If the bearings are sealed bearings the grease nipples are not of any use. The outer end of the blade, the last 2 inches or so, is the cutting edge. The part of the blade from the centre to the cutting edge does not cut and does not need sharpening

With some good maintenance and TLC, there is no reason that it can't last for another 10 years or so. As for the belt, possibly a low quality one that has slipped through the QC. I've had a couple do that over the years. Good one Brandon 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

Thanks Fred! I was really contemplating taking a wire wheel to the deck and ordering some more chassis saver paint but I felt the dust gererated would be better to do outside on a warmer day. We will see how the deck looks for next winters service. If it looks worse than it does right now, I will do a restore next winter.

In my opinion, that belt cracking/damage is normal for that age belt. As it goes over the tension rollers, it is bent backwards and I believe that is where the problems come from. Takes years to do that, though. Nice repair, and really good information. I am going to get some of that protection spray for my stuff!!! Thanks, Brandon, and that will last a LOT longer now! To replace that belt, I think your are going to have to take the protectors off. Be well, be safe, be Blessed!!!

Thank you Jim! I looked at some blue aramid belts the other night but then I saw mixed reviews. Some say they are great and better than factory and others say they crack easy. I don't know what to do. I would like something a little more durable but I did get 3 trouble free years out of that belt also. I know you work on a lot of small engines. Whats your thoughts on the blue belts? Are they better than factory? Be bleesed buddy!

Great presentation as usual, and a great reminder to check out equipment at the end of the season. I was always taught that things last a bit longer when you take care of them. A little preventative maintenance can go along way as far as keeping things operating properly and standing the test of time!!!

They sure do and because i'm getting there up in age and I usually have about 2 dozen things swimming through my head at any given time, I also put a little tag on my things that I service to remind me that I did it. So when spring time hits, I know I'm good to go.

Did you think about balancing the blades? Unbalanced blades are a great way to cause all kinds of vibration related damage to a mower.

Excellent point. I thought about fixturing them up to check but decided againt it. I didn't remove enough for it to be a concern. I only touched up the edge and I did it equally on both sides.

The reason they cut level if because the only cutting is on the outside 2" or so of the blade. You notice that even after 3 years, the section close to the center is practically untouched. I mow about 8 acres (6 of my own and 2 for my sister-in law) and I have to sharpen my blades about every other mowing time. I have lots of crawfish mounds and fire ant beds so I have a lot of rock and dirt impacts that really wear on the blades. I keep 2 sets of blades for each of my mowers and replace them after about 2 seasons. As for the belts cracking, I dont have a clue other than maybe a poor quality belt. My OEM belt lasted 1 year which I replaced with another from Ferris which also lasted a year. Since then I have used premium quality Kevlar belts and now, I get 4 years or more out of a belt.
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 9 ай бұрын
I cant remember what I ended up going with for a belt when I replaced. it. Probably OEM but it;s hard to say. I generally try to get at least OEM quality on anything I do or maybe a little bettter if possible because I'm a firm believer in trying to go a little better so have a more reliable result. These blades I am SUPER impressed with. I remember when I bought them that I did a lot of research and they had a really good rating. My property as about an acre and I mow it every weekend for the past 3 years and they barely show any wear. I was pretty impressed with how little wear they had. I would have to go back into the linked video to remember what blades I went with.

Those blades look rather thick compared to my electric mower. Always thought that I was the only one sharpening those blades with a grinder with a flapdisc on it😅. Your mower looks very sturdy with such thick belts on it. Wonder which kind of engine runs it? Shall be a 50cc I guess. Wonderful repair Brandon. Always details that makes us better and wiser. Many thanks for your useful input. A machine that served you for many years and still keeps running now. That Arccaptain is awesome. A LED-light and a sheet with all the settings on it. Another blade of grass will be cut another day. My mower is a Gravely commercial zero turn and I bought it in 2014 in Florida. Now we are in Missouri and now have to deal with rocks. One of my pastures I spent a few days cutting it down with my stihl trimmer, and wasn't worried about the real big section. So I'm trimming along and got down to a small section. So i decided to bring out the mower and low and behold i hit barb wire and it was caught in the blades. So back to the building and raise up the mower and remove 2 blades. Then the problem started in where it had a vibration and it got worse. As i was mowing and sweeping up leaves dumping into the garden. As I went and made a turn i looked back and a blade fell out and luckily the bolt was still in the hole. Called the dealer to make an appointment took it in. He calls the next day and says the key way on the crankshaft was torn up but he said he could get a machine shop make a sleeve to extend the key way. He also mentioned not to idle around run it full throttle. He said otherwise he would have to pull the motor and replace the crankshaft which would be over $1000. i said let's try it his way with the added piece. Had them change the oil and filter and same with the wheel motors. So all that cost was 270 dollars. For the price of these mowers it was the way for me.

That sounds like the type of luck I usually have. Lucky for me my lawn is fairly flat. My back lawn is small and it was a overgrown mess with trees and pucker brush when we moved in. I made a drag (video on youtube) and made a lawn out back so knock on wood I havent hit any rocks or obstacles. I'm glad you got your mower back in working order. It definately pays to take care of them and maintain them versus the price of a new mower. The prices these days are crazy. I think you went about it the right way. It's what I would have done also. Have a great weekend Jake!

Hey Brandon, I was looking out for your new video and I enjoyed it, nice project to do. I've made a new one for a friend when I was still working, made it from stainless steel but a little bit to thick ( 2 mm) because it was all I had. Waiting for the next one, I' curious what that's gonna be nice job and you treated well if you look at the blades, have a very nice weekend and stay safe,greetings.

I know why your belt it trying to snap. I had a new one snap on me. I was mowing with my Yardmachines its basically a Yardman the same thing and I solved the problem. So what you need to do is find a Bungee Cord and get a hook off of it and connect that to the big spring and let the hook snap onto the bracket that little line that goes up near the left spindle on the none chute side. It works really well for me and now there is not so much tension on the belt it's more free and loose than it being too tight. I hope you get what I'm saying too lol 😅 but like I said just get a hook and connect that to the big spring and onto that little bracket.
@CraigyWaigyplays_official
@CraigyWaigyplays_official 5 ай бұрын
At 1:16 in your video you see that big spring? Just connect a hook to that and onto the bracket and it will make that spring not so tight for your belt and that should fix the problem. It fixed mine 💯 just make sure your belt isn't to loose but it should at least free it up a little bit. Also I've been making myself a project and I actually turned my Yardmachines into a Yardman I changed the color and I got myself a Yardman hood so you can't even tell it was a Yardmachines anymore lol... If I make a video on it you can see it looks just like a Yardman I'll have to make a video on it soon and I'll give some advice about it as well 👍
