While I may be Sigmar’s chief lorekeeper in Azyr, I still make mistakes from time to time. The realmspheres are not planets, but spherical atmospheres that contain the flat, disc like realms. So my complaint doesn’t really qualify. I will always own up to any mistakes in research I make, and I very much apprecaiate those who corrected me. These videos are meant to spark discussion!

Ah, yes, the everchanging explanations of how the Mortal Realms work. I still remeber a short story about a wizard who walked through all the 8 Realms and reached the edge, accidentally breached it and let the Chaos in. Nowadays (at least going by AoS Soulbound Core Rulebook) each Realm had Chaso enter it in its own unique way thereby justifying the dominance of a specific god (like Khorne entering Aqshy through a massive comabt festival turned into a massacare). As for my favourite Realm, I think that's either Chamon (because it has Tzeentch and Kharadron Overlords, my two favourite factions) or Ulgu (all of that crazy backstabbing potential).
@SigmarsLorekeeper6 ай бұрын
I’d be interested in reading that wizard story and comparing it to modern lore interpretations!

Mind-blowing fact: *The Mortal Realms are the materialized Winds of Magic* And their names are not just an empty sounds, such as the IP trade marks like “Astra Militarum” / “Adeptus Astartes”, but have existed in the Warhammer background for 40 years! So Age of Sigmar is not so "baseless/ungrounded" setting as some people think. It's just based on the old Wahammer lore about magic, and not just copy of the map of Europe.

There are definately people who complain that AoS shamelessly reuses characters and lore from the old world but they forget that GW is very open about the fact that AoS is a continuation of WHFB not a different univerde

@@SigmarsLorekeeper Mind-Blowing Fact #2: We previously knew almost nothing about the Warhammer Fantasy universe outside of the “Old World” planet! For example, the idea that this is a 40k Galaxy did not come true, but there was no other information!
@shorelessskies6 ай бұрын
I like how weird and nonsensical the “physics” of the mortal realms are and I hope it gets weirder. Understanding that AOS is not in our universe (like 40K is) helped me to start to wrap my head around the setting
@SigmarsLorekeeper6 ай бұрын
He wacky is what makes it fun! But with the good writting it isn’t too far fetched. All the wacky rules and physics make sense within the AoS universe but not in ours. The disconnect id important!

@@SigmarsLorekeeper To be honest, I never considered Warhammer 40,000 to be science fiction, and therefore that it was "our world in the future." It’s more like “fantasy in space,” that is, a completely fictionalized universe that, by pure chance, looks like our. After all, there are not 8 planets in their Solar System, but 10.

Good vid! …but yeah the Realms aren’t planets but flat discs. The newest arcane cosmos map they shown for AoS4 highlights their flat plane look incredibly well. 😁 Nice bit about energy also moving, that works well with how the magic winds kept traveling until they collided with cosmic debris of worlds destroyed by chaos and each caused a big bang making their own magic realities(the mortal realms). Shout-out to looking up “AoS cosmology lore-reddit”, should pop up a in-depth post about how the Realms work from a big 2022 white dwarf overview they did.(I love the void things especially as creatures older than chaos since they pre-date emotions)
@ce48796 ай бұрын
Last bit is info to use for Ulgu. Besides dangerous living mists it’s also home to naturally shrewd tradesmen, potent writing inks exports(and illegal magical drugs), has the most major moons outside it’s realmsphere home to shadow daemons Malerion made truces with and it’s stars are infamous for getting you lost if you travel by them, that’s why everyone uses Azyr’s stars* to navigate by up to Sigmar building a clockwork device around the brightest star Sigendil so it’s light can guide traders across the lower realms. *stars in the other realms aren’t much better with Ghur’s amber stars fighting eachother & Shyish’s ghoul stars shining lights that can raise the hungry dead.
@SigmarsLorekeeper6 ай бұрын
You are completely right, as I said in a response to another comment, i definately was misinformed on that end (maybe it was a retcon? I swear in a very very early book they were called planet like) but realmspheres are atmospheric spheres that contain flat realms! Thanks for the correction
@ce48796 ай бұрын
@SigmarsLorekeeper No problem, it was an honest mistake. 👍 Also maybe you were reading about a sub-realm like the Orb Infernia? A lot of those are planetoids & moons that orbit the Realms and are inhabited. I know they were implied to be discs with edges since the first AoS1 starter book had Gorkamorka lead a super Waaagh straight across the realms until they hit the edges and then Waaaghed all the way back(comically restomping all the Order cities & Chaos forts that were just rebuilding from the first time the waaaagh stampeded over them)

Great video and thanks for your work!💜 Additionally, for anyone who wants to dive into Warhammer Age of Sigmar, I recommend learning two things: First, read the book «Liber Chaotica - Tzeentch», or a similar source about Magic in the Old World, and realise that the Winds of Magic are not just bare elements, such as earth/water/fire/air; the Winds of Magic are, first of all, emotions, mentalities and characters. By remembering which Wind has which nature, you will instantly understand the way of thinking and behavior of the inhabitants of the corresponding Realm. Secondly, if the Mortal Realms setting seems too “crazy” to someone... Read «A True Story» book by Lucian of Samosata, ancient author of the 2nd century. After descriptions of the war between Endymion the king of the Moon and Phaethon the king of the Sun over colonization of the Venus, - you'll feel prepared for any Warhammer story!

In the hopes of keeping their origins a bit simpler I did refer to them as elemental energies but I will focus more on what the winds of magic are and how they apply to the world of Age of Sigmar!

To be honest its mostly Aqshy (technically the Great Parch) that has the most regarding lore about civilizations and cultures (not related to the major factions)
@SigmarsLorekeeper6 ай бұрын
That’s very true, Aqshy has been a keystone to the setting for a long time. It was the first glimpse we saw of the mortal realms when Vandus and his Stormcast appeared there in the Realmgate wars to kick off the age of Sigmar, and now it’s the main focus of the 4th edition narrative. I’d love to see a realm like Chamon or Ulgu get some more love. Although I’m expecting Ulgu to be a main focus when the dark elves release

So the real question is this: if you have sex in the Realm of Life, is the chance the woman gets pregnant higher? Does everyone from there have extremely big families? Do people grow up faster, even if their species matures more slowly?

Im not sure if its the realm of life itself that would be the cause for that or that no one is starving and fighting for water and food to the death like almost every other realm.

The realms are discs not spheres
@SigmarsLorekeeper6 ай бұрын
Looks like you’re right! The realm gate wars are definately a bit outdated I should have looked into more recent sources. Although they are still referred to as realmspheres but that is in reference to the atmosphere and area around the planear realm. Thanks for the catch!
@ce48796 ай бұрын
Yeah, the realmspheres are just atmospheres that contain their own star systems & moons. The realms are flat discs and indeed the current Seraphon battletome notes a Skaven dig so deep he popped out the underside and saw upside-down temple-cities because the chaos forces on top were too potent so the Seraphon flew underneath the realm and landed below them. Also they’re infinite in scope because those edges are always expanding outward and crystallizing to form new lands, sub-realms and moons basically making them unending as new places come into creation and float towards the innerlands.
