My Dad passed away and loved to sail. We had to sell his Laser sail boat because no one in our family knows how to sail. I told my mom to keep his Windsurfing equipment so we can at least try that out one day, and this makes me confident I can learn! I'm so excited to get out on the water :)

Last week I bought a beginner windsurfer. Today I made my first practices using what I learned here. At 75 I thought i needed a new challenge. I was able to get the mast up from the water and at times sail a few feet. Sometimes I was able to stop and get of gracefully and other times a big splash. I was also able to climb on in water depth at my armpits. Long way to go. Looking now to compare what’s I was doing to the videos. Awesome! Thank you. Andrew

To anyone who is new to Windsurfing, wear a compass and take reading of where your land is before sailing. I and another guy rented windsurf boards back in 2003 at South Padra on the Gulf and went out not paying attention ending up way out at sea before we realized it about an hour before sun set. We found a Bouye climbed up on it and still couldn't see land but decided to follow the Bouyes hopefully back to land. As it got dark, we started seeing some small sparkles of light miles away and out of pure luck we landed back on the beach we started, that was a real shocker, we were thankful. We took the Windsurf boards back to the rental place and they had closed up shop. If we hadn't got lucky and found our way back, I don't know when anyone would've searched for us out there.

@GetWindsurfing3 жыл бұрын

@trexinvert3 жыл бұрын
No. This video was done in a small protected bay or lake. Typical condition with wind there is "always" chop/waves in the water. Rare that you can just have wind with no waves. So, yes staying on the board on water rocking back/forth/up/down is part of the "actual conditions". Here's a few tips: a.) When you feel unstable then just "drop" that sail and grab the line again. b.) If you fall back "grab the mast and yank the sail towards you" to grab the wind and stop your fall. Do it quickly and release quickly. c.) If you fall forwards "grab the mast and push the sail down to the water". It will arrest your fall into the water. Do it quickly and release quickly.

I trained my self to secure position.. And will soon start.... I am Training on English channel. Open water however I always stay 5m off the shore.. And I don't go out on winds blowing off shore... Never train in open water with winds off shore.... It's dangerous.... I started with paddle and windsurfing board 152l. 104 is a sinker for me. So then I was balancing on board only.. And then I attached the sail next day.. The beauty of this is.. That board without sail is less stable. So when you master it it's easy peasy when you uphauling... The key thing is control.... Sail is what you push of when you wanna turn :) its like someone is holding you by hand.... And then you work your legs... :)

awesome video! thx! But have a question to anyone, has anyone tried windsurfing having a bad lower back? I am terrified to have it hurt again but windsurfing seems to be awesome try.
@GetWindsurfing8 жыл бұрын
+NorthWind You should probably get advice from your doctor.
As a beginner you will "fall" and "fall" and "fall". Many times it will be unpredictable and your body will jerk and twist in all different position. Falling on your fingers, arms, elbows, shoulders...it all depends on how agile you are. Lower back bad? Forget it. Only, advanced/intermediates with many years of sailing can just pop up and "cruise" without falling. You don't need a sailing coach you need a personal trainer to get your back into shape. There is hope. I have a bad back, myself....I know the pain. Keep on!!
@Northwindbreeze8 жыл бұрын
cheers for the advice fellas.

I have a few problems with my back and I have been sailboarding for the past 3 years. learning with the uphaul rope was definitely harder, remember to lean backward and let your weight lift the sail up instead of pulling the sail up with your shoulders.. otherwise ask someone else to show you how to beachstart, when you do it properly, the wind lifts everything for you and it is pretty effortless. otherwise, once you are planning, there is not much back work. the harness holds it in position and you simply bend your knees and lean back to manoeuvre. try to find a light mast and boom.

You might notice I actually try talking in some of the clips but because of the sound of the wind it was unusable. May I ask where you are from and if English is your first language? We often get compliments about the slow speaking as it helps many people to understand the instructions in English. However, to a native speaker, it sounds a little odd. I personally hate the way I sound in the voice over but if all the relevant info is put across and understood then I am a happy coach. Im pleased you found the video ecellent, hope it helps you on the water. Phil

nice vid, when you tack or gybe, do you use your feet to rotate the board?
@trexinvert3 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. How did you know about this. One of the things instructors never mention, because they want you to "glide" into the turn like a freakin sailboat. Well a windsurf rig is not a sailboat and it can do more. So, you've figured it out. It's just logical. The sail blows/rather "cuts" into the wind and "stays in that position parallel to wind" then everything else moves around with it. Yes, sheeting in tack or gybe direction only bends the sail into the wind a little to fill the sail, but the sail never crosses the wind(unless you are intentionally setting up/flipping the sail for turning....and then it instantly whips back into the "cutting" position with wind). You can even do a 270 degree tack or jibe, just by brute forcing the board. Especially, if you need to do a quick reverse. Keep on...

@GetWindsurfing9 жыл бұрын
+Anabol Anabol Hi, Great news that you want to start getting in to windsurfing. I would recommend a very big floaty board with lots of stability. The bigger board the better as it will allow you to focus fully on your technique & sail handling skills. Something like a Rio or a Start would be an excellent choice to begin with. Rio www.star-board-windsurfing.com/2016/products/boards/rio Start www.star-board-windsurfing.com/2016/products/boards/start Looking at sails, you need to think about the type of conditions you will be windsurfing in. Is the wind light or strong? Ideally as you progress you will look to get a range of sails in different sizes for different wind strengths. To begin with you should probably look for something around a 5.5 for stronger winds or a 6.5 for lighter winds would be my recommendation to you. If you can give me an idea of the conditions you are aiming to learn in, it will help to advise you further in more detail. It is also worth considering learning the basics at a windsurf centre as they will have lots of kit available for you to try and progress on. Or consider joining us on one of our GetWindsurfing courses. www.getwindsurfing.com/#!courses-abroad/cuy0 I hope this helps
@trexinvert8 жыл бұрын
Don't forget windsurfing is both "balancing on a rocking board with choppy waters" and "grabbing/harnessing the wind". So how do fight a wobbly/sinking board plus push/pulling wind? Take it one at a time. Try to master the board balancing, first. I highly recommend some dry pre-training on a balance board. You know those board and cylinder exercise balance things. Just google them. Then when you get on a windsurfing set-up(which is usually for lighter people...don't be surprised if you are sinking), you can totally focus on the wind balance. Keep on.

Is core strength, leg strength or both the most important for successfully learning to sailboard? I want to train this winter so I can learn this summer.
@trexinvert3 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely when "beginning" due to falling down, getting back up, and just hanging onto the mast(until you learn to use the harness). It's the wind, it's the wave and the weight and sail power that you must learn to tame. Grip strength especially. For core it helps but "knowing" how to use both legs and back simultaneously to lean with power and quickness. However, once you get it you learn to use/grab the wind. I've seen older guys in 60's get out there

My back hurts just watching. Is windsurfing taxing on the back or arms, holding that sail and with the wind all the time?
@trexinvert4 жыл бұрын
During the learning process pulling, falling and getting up is "very taxing". Once, you get proficient it's not your arm, back that you need to worry it's your wrist. They will cramp and gloves won't help. Then you get a harness and efficient!!! You could be 70 yrs old and be able to windsurf if you know how.
