Welcome to Mean's Woodshop! Join me today as we continue to explore different wood species for beginners. Today we're looking at my personal favorite, cherry. Cherry is a staple in fine woodworking, and beloved by many, for good reason too. This wood is great for just about any woodworking application, and looks absolutely beautiful, it won't break your bank, and it's pretty friendly to work with.

I buy my cherry on second hand market, old furniture for a cheap price. I use the cherry for shipmodeling. It is a beautiful wood to use. Even to use for carving. And I agree it burns easy when you saw it or sand it machinal. Thanks for this informative video.

I harvest and saw my own hardwood off my farm and cherry is the #1 tree that I have and use in my woodworking projects. I can confirm it is the most enjoyable wood that you can work with.

Thanks, great information for this beginner! I just bought 14 long pieces of cherry wood from an older woodworker who is shutting down his shop. I plan to use it for a bookshelf.

Thanks for the video. I am going to be creating a lap desk for my wife using cherry. The board I picked out has a beautiful strip of sapwood, which will, hopefully, turn out beautiful as I match the sapwood up in the center of the desk. Thank you, also, for the recommendation on spray lacquer. This will be the first piece I have made out of cherry.

Since I’ve started wood working about 9 months ago I’ve finally got into cherry. The favorite thing for me is the smell it lets off when cutting and when sending it thru the planer. That’s my two cents. Lol.

Glad I came across your video. Great job! I bought a rough sawn 12/4 at 10ft length of Pennsylvania Cherry for $344 today. I’m going to use it for a workbench bottom with a European Beech top. I purchased it locally from MacBeath Hardwoods.

Have you ever worked with choke cherry/tame cherry? I just took a few choke cherry trees down to keep the goats from eating the leaves and am thinking abut milling them for projects.

I bought a beautiful piece 5' long for my fireplace mantle and now I am finishing it with an oil base natural colour. The board is 2" thick and 9.5" deep and cost $200. Thank you for the info.

goddamn for $200 where I'm from you could get even a board of the same thickness and depth but like 7ft long, in Black and White Ebony.

I have a few chunks of cherry from a tree that was cut down. They were sitting outside for a few months in the weather. I am wanting to make some mallets and cutting boards from them - will I likely face splitting as the wood dries out? And is a solid hunk of cherry as a butcher's block a good idea? Or is it better if I cut it into strips and glue it back together to show the edge grain for the surface? Thanks!
@MeansWoodshop
@MeansWoodshop 2 жыл бұрын
Splitting is within the realm of possibility. You should be able to get an idea though if the end grain is already showing signs of cracking or splitting. I believe a butcher block would be ok out of a solid piece, but cutting it into strips and putting it back together would probably hold up longer in the long run I’d think. I hope it all works out!

my first woodworking project was a display for my lighter collection in my production technology class, i used cherry for it that was provided by the school because it was a small amount and i’m already hooked. now in the process of sourcing a good few boards of it so i can build a gaming desk. i plan on burning the cherry a little bit with a torch to give it a darker colour, and then i’m gonna coat it in clear epoxy resin. i also plan on using a cnc machine to cut out a pattern in the wood and fill it with a pearlescent blue coloured resin

Hey, give us more insight please. How likely is this wood to suffer burn marks from saw blades? Any finishes to avoid? How likely is it to warp? Tell us about moisture content levels for working with it.
@MeansWoodshop
@MeansWoodshop 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, OneDrop. I did mention in the video that cherry is notorious for burning easily, mostly caused by a dull blade. The best way to avoid this is to make sure the blade is nice and sharp. And I’d mentioned in the video that I think just about any finish works great for cherry. Preferably a clear top coat, but oil finishes are fine too. And honest answer, I really don’t know much about moisture content with cherry. I always buy my lumber ready to go from the hardwood store. Not too sure about warping either, but just in my personal experience I’ve never had cherry warp on me.

Hate wasted time. Hard wood, has sapwood that stains different then hhe regular grain, as it ages it will get darker same with Brazilian cherry. Use a sharp blade when cutting, sands and stains easily
