Learn how to wax a surfboard. As the saying goes, there is more than one way to skin a cat. Odd saying, but basically, this is just my technique for waxing a surfboard.

I hate waxing boards, so I try and make it last as long as possible. I've found that big bumps over very small areas of the board last the longest. My favorite pattern to do fish scales across the back and middle. Try it out and you'll use less wax

i definitely will try that. sounds interesting. makes sense too on a surfbaord shaped like a fish. haha

hey Thomye! have you had a chance to ride your 6’0 sunday in anything bigger or hollower yet? on the fence about getting a 6’4 but more as a extra volume stepup for heavier surf , im 190lbs and it be 10l more then my normal boards, so pretty similar extra volume as your 6’0 .. not sure how it holds in good waves, surely it would be an insane paddler to get in early?

no, i have not. i do have concerns about it only because the board is so thick. The rails are nice tapered which helps but that will only help a bit. I did watch the video of Timmy Reyes getting barreled on it. But he was riding the small 5'6 I think which would be a lot thinner. the one good thing which might help in bigger waves is that it is narrow relative to its length. If you think about it, guns are pretty wide and long. They just look narrow relative to their length. I had a 7'6 pipe board that was pretty darn fat and wide. technically, if you got a 6'4 Sunday and added a long pointy nose to it, which does nothing other than keep your nose out on steep drops, that board would actually look like a step up. Hoping we get a big south swell soon so I can test it thoroughly.

@@ThomyeSurfs thanks mate. Yeah , Timmy is a tiny dude thou, I’m 190lbs+ . Had a look in the shop today and it feels different then anything else I have seen. 6’4 felt shorter then I expected but waaay thicker. Really curious how it would surf! Didn’t initially look at it but think you surf your 6’0 rally well and looks like it could be good fun in variety of waves.

Hi Thomye , I just purchased a 6'8 firewire seaide and beyond, I use the same wax as you. I may need to remove the wax soon. Are you saying that I can just leave my board in the sun for 5-10 mins, peel off with the straight edge of a wax comb, then use a pickle? Any other recommendations for removing wax from my board? Thanks alot appreciate it.

5 to 10 might be too long. if it is sunny, i would say 1 to 2 mins. Just enough to soften the wax not melt it. If you melt it, it will be a total mess to take off. Again, heat and sun light (UV), especially for a firewire, is bad. it will yellow your board. But 1 to 2 minutes should be fine. When surfing it, you are in the sun but the water usually helps a bit to keep the board cool. Beyond a pickle, that should be fine unless you want to do repairs. if so, then use rubbing alcohol to get any of the left over residue off.

You might not even need direct sun light. If it’s hot out, you can even leave in the shade and the wax will still soften. If you decide to leave it in the sun, grab a glass of water, come back out, done.

You can just throw some white flour over the melted residue and rub it with paper towel. That is pretty much what pickle is.

hello, i was wondering what board you think would be the best for summer waves that are 1-2-3-4 ft i am deciding between the seaside or the twice baked potato i am on the east coast and am trying to get better on a shorter board
@ThomyeSurfs
@ThomyeSurfs 3 жыл бұрын
it all depends on skill level and what volume. make sure to go with volume for groveling. for instance, if you are looking at 35L hypothetically, in the TB, it would be a 5'5 and in the Seaside it would be a 5'8. in a 1' wave, the 5'5 will feel more maneuverable and because of the tail width, it will grovel better even though they are the same volume. Another factor is that all 35 liters are under your body vs with the taller board, you lose some liters in the tips of the nose and tail where volume doesn't help you much. Hope that is making sense. Anyways, for East coast summers, though I have never surfed there, i'd imagine the Twice Baked is a better choice. Watch my TB video's and see how small a wave i can catch. I can catch just as many on my new 6'0 Sunday because that board is 38 liters but i can't turn it in the same tight spaces and on a 1' wave, those are some tight spaces. Having said that, the TB for 1 to 2, the seaside for 2 to 4. but i'm guessing the surf is more often 1 to 2 during summer.

LOL. I wish they did. Funny thing about waxing a board, it always takes me to back to being a kid. I'm 51 but in that moment of waxing a board, I feel like I'm 15 again waxing my first surfboard. I get all kooky too with the day glo. I once waxed by board with 3 colors, red, white(the board), and blue. Drew a US flag with wax. lot of work and only lasted two sessions, so no more of that.

@@ThomyeSurfs Wow I didn't even know they had colors! This is the best waxing video out there. I had no idea about the 'pressure', such great advice. My wax jobs always get clumpy quickly and I realized after watching your video that it's because I'm pressing too hard, especially when reapplying. Thanks man!

I've been getting really into wax patterns. Complex ones. I mostly longboard so that's a BIG canvas. If I do them right with base wax, and put a fresh coat of softer wax over for each session, ...then my patterns last for about 6 mo. It's been fun.
