The Wing Chun Wallbag or 'Sau Bau' is a commonly used training aid for most practitioners in the Art. However, why is it fixed and what does it represent?
If you are just starting out on your Wing Chun journey we hope this clip will give you a little insight into the reasons.
Wing Chun has an optimal range where the concepts of the Art are most effective or possible. The close distance results in a little more difficulty in developing powerful strikes.
As Wing Chun students use Chi Sau and the Wooden Dummy as a large part of the training, it makes sense that there is a direct correlation to the distance we train at on the Wallbag.
Most self defence situation occur with an aggressor gets close, as the victim tries to talk their way out. When the realisation occurs that the aggressor now has real intent and has closed the space the Wing Chun student would require considerable striking skills and not rely on the fist alone. This is where the Wallbag is very useful.
The distance that is adopted can be varied as much as you wish, however, the starting point is exactly the same as the range required to pass the bridge of your training partner in Chi Sau and the correct distance to apply the skills on the Wooden Dummy.
