Dave, dave, Dave what a well planned and excellently delivered lesson. No exception to your other classes. I am currently watching this in the airport and I am itching to go home to practise, experiment and enjoy these concepts. I love the high level breakdown of jazz into simply music elements and concepts/principles. It was a light bulb moment when you said that as I saw how that two pronged framework apply in so many areas of life and art. I am saving myself for the second lesson - so excited. I feel like a small child at Christmas. Thank you for your generosity. This is the perfect resource for someone like me who is a resourceful self-learner with not enough money for lessons at the moment. It goes without saying that you are an excellent player. However you are such a gifted teacher. I love your explanations, gags and chuckles. Always makes me laugh! Thank you a million times more. With more equipped jazz musicians out there, you are well and truly making the world a better place. Love from Australia (though currently in Malaysia for a stop over!)

Dave Frank, I am so happy I saw this video! I actually took private lessons from you while I attended Berklee probably in 2002. I really enjoyed having you as a teacher, but at that time I was focusing more on my rock band, and I regretted choosing rock over jazz piano ever since. I am now a jazz ensemble teacher at an international school in Japan, and have been pumping up my jazz chops in hopes to encourage and instill confidence in my students in their journey toward improvisation. I am going to share this with them in hopes that it clicks and will be infusing your lessons in this video into my teaching. Thanks and blessings to you!

Improvising, as even he describes it, is an act of self expression and art. While in jazz this is a virtue, giving a lesson with this freedom and uncenteredness may result in a lesson that may contain all the information but in a manner that only someone who has deep preview knowledge would understand. Writing down gives it a smoother structure and clearness that helps understand a way of art that can be difficult to understand. Improvising words is an art, but in this case the matter of study is complex enough that it needs a structured and prepared explanation.

Greetings from Rome! Finally, a great teacher who doesn’t focus on modes and all that stuff. However, there are two things on which I have a slightly different perspective, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on them… In my opinion: 1. The so-called Lydian dominant mode is nothing more than the melodic minor mode starting from the IV: why should I even bother learning it if I already know the melodic minor mode? Wouldn’t it be as (barely) useful as learning the Lydian mode if I already know the major scale? Wouldn’t it be better to maintain a consistent approach and stick to using only the tonal modes, that is, the major and minor scales (whether harmonic or melodic)? 2. In Dm7b5, when we are still building up the tension that will follow (“preparazione” of “tensione”), the natural minor mode of C sounds much smoother because it allows us to connect Ab and C with Bb, which is a major second away from both notes, avoiding augmented seconds (as would occur in the harmonic minor mode between Ab and B). Thanks!

On the fourth progression, why can't you play a D major scale over the A7? It seems that the dominant chord implies a V, which would make the I a D major.
@glenn_6044 Жыл бұрын
This goes against everything I ever learned about jazz improv. This method is the way I’d break down the chords into its respective scales but most jazz players say to play over the chords not the scales. I’m confused.

hi dave, question i grew up only playing classical on piano, had about 12 years of experience with that, and only learned to improv on that, my problem is not really to cut lose from my old traditions, but more to stabalize in the structure of jazz, i have been practicing free jazz for myself past weeks, and i think it sounds about right, but i don't have a grasp on more basic jazz like elevator jazz, i can already play and know most music theory (i did my homework) but that is only mostly classical, so with my hands i already know how to move, but not with my mind, can you give me some tips or links to some videos what can help me figure out jazz at a more advanced level. if i just google jazz tutorial i get garbige of just some people explaining cords and pentatonic scale, which is not helpful, because i already know all of that. btw your videos have already been very inspiring to my playing, thanks a lot
@primecortex97179 жыл бұрын
Dave : Excellent . What I noticed is that after the " initial cord mapping," in many songs, there's a, shall i call it, a " second order " layer of cord mapping when you look at the scale improv overlay. For example, in the song "Take the A Train", it would simple be ! / IV / V / I i.e.. C / F / G/ C. This is a nice additional distillation. primecortex

Great videos Dave, thanks for making them! In Autumn Leaves you mention going briefly to Eb. I'm wondering if you can regard that measure as IV chord, and play Lydian, which means you just stay in Bb? My Aebersold has D7+9 after the half dim. Since that has the minor 3rd at the top, I'm wondering if you could treat it as Phrygian making the whole thing ii - V - I - IV - vii - iii - vi - ii - V - I etc.. in the Bb 'planet'?
@DaveFrank8 жыл бұрын

Hi Dave: Thank you for such a fast reply! My question is about modulations through the chord changes; like how many steps in a 2-5-1, or a 2-5. Is it 4th's., 5th's? How about is it the Circle of fourths? I'm confused, but I hear players modulate through the changes, change keys all the time, and then come back to the home key. I was wondering if you had a video on this topic. Thanks

What do all the major 7s mean? Like the 2 majors and all that, what are those? Progressions?
@Ellieakacija8 жыл бұрын
It means it includes the major 7th of the scale in the chord. For example, if we had the c major scale: C D E F G A B C The major chord would be: 1 3 5 or C E G The major seventh just adds the 7th: C E G B If it's a dominant 7th, then you lower the 7th by a half step: C E G Bb Minor 7: C Eb G Bb Diminished 7: C Eb Gb Bb Altered/augmented 7: C E G# B

Your videos are great! Thank you for uploading! I have a question about the "A train" part. You said that we can use the Lydian Dominant scale for the D7b5 chord, Im guessing that you mean to play the Lydian Dom scale in D because both the scale and the chord have a flat 5 in them? In that case what do we do about the flat 7 in the Lydian Dominant scale? Do we disregard it because the chord doesnt have a flat 7? Or would it be "ok" to play the flat 7 in the scale even though the chord does not have that note? Thanks!

Does the Eb chord in line 1 have a scale? It seems not to fit in the 2-5-1 series.

Thank you for clearing up the chord mapping technique and scales to improvise over them. I think that you are a great instructor and I honestly appreciate your wisdom and guidance. Much thanks brother.

This may be the silliest question asked yet.. but I'm a bit confused with chord fingering.. Is there a certain reason you play Dminor7 with: 5-4-2-1 and Cmaj7 with 5-3-2-1? My best guess is it's just purely random ^^ I used to play everything without the "4th" finger.. but now I'm actually liking the fourth finger,,, men it messes with my muscle memory hah! Gotta relearn.

LeavesLullaby can be either, the third is most common

This is a very well explained video. You may mention this later, but my thoughts are how do you intuitively stay in 4/4 time when improvising without writing out the notes?
