I love this band, and I had been wating for this record for too long. I wasn't disappointed, at all. As Sam points out, you can hear that Nergal really took his time to compose and craft this songs. It's sounds familiar (Demigod, The Apostasy, Evangelion, The Satanist), but somehow it sounds new. Everybody was saying a few years back that The Satanist was the band's magnum opus, and even Nergal himself didn't think he could "outwrite" The Satanist. I think, and Sam agrees, he did. Also, I wanna point out Sam's "critique" of the album, that to some maybe the "fuck christianity" lyrics/imagery is overdone, and it's kinda always the "same old, same old" but as Sam points out, eastern Europe, as well as Latinamerica (I'm from Mexico) both, church and the State are still pretty well attached to each other. So I get Nergal's "artistic license" to say "fuck church/christianity, just let us be". I fully agree with him. Just so you know, this past week Guatemala cancelled a show of Marduk, and a conservative christian group tried to cancel the band's performance in Monterrey (northern city of Mexico). So yeah, maybe to some the "fuck christianity" lyrics/imagery is overdone, but for a lot of us (if no the majority of the world) christianity (catholicism, in the case of LATAM) is still a pain in the ass, and something we want to back off. Anyway, amazing record, from an amazing band, and a very fair review by the high chief himself. Cheers, metalheads!! \m/

So happy to see Sam back! Behemoth is near and dear to my heart. I am about 5 years post-religion. I am a proud apostate that appreciates the irreverence. What behemoth has done so well is mixing emotional sounds into their music (orchestral and choral additions) without losing any of its extreme edge. Rather it contrasts the harshness with beauty and makes the whole so much better than the sum of its parts. The Satanist is in my top 5 albums of all time and this follow up *does not dissapoint*.

Been a fan of Behemoth since Demigod came out, and I've loved every album that they've released, even the black metal ones. I love that Behemoth wasn't afraid to take risks and didn't try to write The Satanist part 2, which I know some might be pissed about. It's a beautifully written album, but I wish God = Dog came after the intro. It would've made the choir pretty creepy, and right now it's a rough transition from Solve into Wolves ov Siberia. I need to listen to it more, but this will be one of my favorites this year.
@Metalton956 жыл бұрын
Hm, I pretty much consider it Satanist 2.0 as it holds even less riffs and upbeat drums than the Satanist and more clean guitars, clean vocals and choir (love the hook on Bartzabel though!), compared to the pre-Satanist albums. They have shown their atmospheric universe can be combined with crushing riffs, tempo changes and intense drumming, but they haven't gone that path these last two albums imo. But I am of the unpopular opinion of loving Evangelion, lol.
@karpizzlefromjhofffilms6826 жыл бұрын
MetalForTheMasses Evangelion is the best album in their career. Caught them at the peak of their creativity and originality before they became Hot Topic girlfriend metal.
@Nappa90006 жыл бұрын
You're not alone there, I LOVE Evangelion, and is my second favorite Behemoth album behind Demigod. I can see how it sounds a bit like The Satanist, but I'm also catching pieces of other albums, like Zos Kia Cultus, Evangelion, and even their old black/blackened death stuff like Grom.
@nigelmacquillan72116 жыл бұрын
Nah, Evangelion was their peak. Every song is a fucking banger that makes you wanna learn the songs. The production is perfect. The extra elements like brass and what not are always well placed. The structures are spot on. The whole album was perfect.
@Metalton956 жыл бұрын
Oh, I often saw comments about Evangelion being their weakest.. but I think that opinion was popular before the release of The Satanist. It's always been my favourite, and I cannot fathom the hype of O Father O Satan O Sun, when they released Lucifer already.. that song is pure fucking evil! And like you said, the songs are all bangers, it isn't all about Ov Fire And The Void (despite how good the song is). And the solos were great as well.. I think I know what to listen to right now lol!
@zorac916 жыл бұрын
Since The Satanist, I've now been seeing Behemoth as craft makers. This album is just another craft, artifact or a whole new canvas. I've always loved Behemoth with great passion, but that maturity that Sam mentioned, you can really tell something great is happening on Nergal's mind. I don't know, they have always been great in every sense but I've seen a further step which I didn't thought was possible. Beautiful, fantastic, dark, diabolical, phenomenal album

Nergal is a big part of how I got into Thelema. His references to Crowley throughout the discography really piqued my interest. I saw them live at Ozzfest 2008 and still have my signed copy of The Apostasy, but I was too awestruck at the time (and too concerned with holding up the line, because it was fucking looooooooonnnnggg) to tell him that. So if you see this, thanks Nergal for turning me onto something that has changed my life significantly. And I hope you understand just how important it was to me to get that autograph considering I had to miss Hatebreed's entire set to do it!

Listening to the record as a whole for the first time, I'm relieved that it's a lot better than initially expected. There's a lot to latch onto and I really love the Goth influence which Sam didn't really talk about in his otherwise very fine review. The advance singles were all pretty good to great, but the finest meat of the record comes into play on that second half! Excellent work, suits me more than "The Satanist" did in the beginning.

This is the first time I may have to disagree with Sam, a 9 minutes review it's not fair for this album because there is a lot of background here that may have influenced this album in the way that it sounds. Like the fact that behemoth it's becoming a more commercial band and we've seen this coming when nergal started to take behemoth more like a side project for merch (or is it just me who saw the dog food, coffee brand, pins, artwork book) when I saw this I think to myself "next album they're going to pull up a ghost and be super mellow". I think the fact that people are more pissed about it's that the have a brutal catalogue like "slaves shall serve " and all of the evangelion album proves that they can be very aggressive, but instead of transitioning to a more operatic side with something of the death era they just focused all of the effort on the artwork (and it shows let's be honest it's very good ) .What's clever it's bands like opeth which they have left the death side to be full on prog band but they have done it calmly and they know that when they release another growly song people are going to be so pleased but here.... I mean they took all of the backbone of the original band to sell merch and if not then how come there are at least 8 different bundles for vinyls, 4 for merch with shirts, one that its the "666" limited I mean it almost sounds like fast food combo they main point it's that they just want the band to appeal to more audience but to do so they had to take away most of the extreme side ....I mean it's just disappointing here for a fan, and come on Sam there is a lot of fat here the intro and the outro are just waste, the song rom 5:32 it's literally pure nothingness and bartzabel it's a middle part which leads to nothing

Good to see Sam on a review! This record is awesome coming off The Satanist. It's been 4 years, but its a perfect transition into this record right out of the gate (cue the satanic children's choir).
