Was so stoked for this album, listened to the whole thing in one sitting, and after it all ended I don't think a single moment truly stuck with me. All the tracks kind of just bled together, and felt like a mix of all the less interesting tracks off the Satanist. It was also pretty tame, I was hoping for them to either go back to their black metal roots, go back to their 2000s death metal sound circa demigod, or double down on the blackened death of the Satanist. Instead we got more of the rock with all the pentatonic guitar solos and riffs, which while isn't bad, is easily the least interesting direction they could have taken imo. The whole album felt like a Marvel movie; entertaining and worth the price of admission, but that's about it.

Joshua Connor I've never understood the "why can't they do more death metal" thing when they already have a whole bunch of death metal under their belt. Just because this album isn't face melting death metal doesn't mean it's not heavy. Just seems like dynamics and atmosphere have become more important to them, and have taken that in favour of death metal. I'm fine with it. This is a stunning album, but of a grower but still.
@JoshuaConnorMusic6 жыл бұрын
Because it's a sound they're really good at and haven't done in a while, and would be interesting to see how they tackle that sound now. I'm not asking them to make demigod 2, we've already got demigod, but that doesn't mean they can't make an incredible album in more the death metal style. And it doesn't have to be straight death, I even suggested they continue exploring the blackened death style they started with The Satanist, to see how far they can take this concept. Unfortunately they didn't, they didn't push it at all, they just kind of stagnated. I've gone back to this album a few times now, and to be brutally honest it's even less impressive than when I first heard it. Absolutely nothing sticks out, aside from maybe Bartzabel, but even then it's faint. And when you compare it to The Satanist, it's no contest. Compare the opener to Blow your trumpets, compare the closer to O father O Satan O sun, compare the heaviest track to Messe Noire. That album even did the accessible rock sound better on tracks like the title track. I dunno, I'm gonna wait for their next release, this one's just a bit of a dud for me.
@BlutigeTranen6 жыл бұрын
If you think this album is them stagnating, you've missed the entire flow and point of ILYAYD. It is incredibly far removed from The Satanist with really only one song that is reminiscent of it. And it's all fine and dandy that you want them to go back to their roots but that isn't who the band is, anymore, either. They are artists truly putting forward an art piece, not an album of singles.

good review, personally i'm feeling more of an 8.5 on it, i think it's fantastic and a really good follow up to the satanist. it's not quite as conceptual and doesn't flow quite as perfectly, but i really liked how varied and unpredictable it was. still probably my favorite metal album of the year.

Man, I really miss Apostasy/Evangelion era Behemoth. Extreme black and death metal is in my opinion when Behemoth is at their best. I wanted so much speed from this album. Oh well.
@jimm73465 жыл бұрын
You know, i like those albums, but they're probably my least favorite behemoth albums. Zos Kia Cultus is probably my favorite of their "heavier" albums, with Demigod a close second; but for quite a few reasons, the Satanist is tied with Zos Kia as my overall favorite of theirs. I read Nergals book right before picking up Satanist, and just the circumstances surrounding the release and the things going on in my life when it dropped, it's kinda become one of those albums that's become important to me. My issues with Apostasy and Evangelion were just that they seemed derivative of Demigod (kinda like how some are saying ILYAYD is derivative of the Satanist) and the layered, digitally altered vocals of Nergal's were getting a little tired for me. But some of the tracks on those albums are easily among my favorites of theirs, especially live.

Nowhere near being the Santanist II. I don't like it as much but it's definitely not a repeat. It sounds like they included melodeath to me. It's a decent album I'm happy they're evolving.

I wasn’t too thrilled about the ending track either. O Father O Satan O Sun off of The Satanist was a phenomenal outro track. I believe they could’ve ended the album better
