The story of Baldur's doom is a great example of this. However the story of Thor losing his hammer to the Ettin king, Ymir, is a great example of how useful he can be when he is under the command of Thor. Loki is instinct, primal desire. Thor is will. This is why Thor is depicted to constantly be chasing Loki across the sky, it is a deep metaphor for the relationship of the two. This idea, rooted in ancient European philosophy, is very similar to the idea in Judaeo-Christianity. Free-will is NOT evil, but can be VERY dangerous if not controlled by the one who possesses it. I wish people would open their minds and truly consider the ideas expressed by those whom they deem as some sort of "religious," enemy. And most of all, I wish more people would stop taking things at face value! There is so much more to every set of belief than most people realize. They hear these tales of European mythology and take it literally. They hear tales of Judaeo-Christian lore, and take it literally! So many people, without even realizing the extent of the deep metaphors that are thoroughly woven into the philosophy or religion they follow, are so quick to take everything at face value, then turn around and profusely defend these misunderstood ideas from those who also don't even fully understand the extent of their own! It's ludicrous! People, stop wasting your time trying to invalidate the ideas of others. All questions that ascertain to truth are equal and valid. Find YOUR path and stick to it.
