Offering us the possibility of waking up, Alan Watts contemplates the joyous cosmology that we are God playing the roles of ordinary people.
This series is brought to you by the Alan Watts Organization and Ram Dass’ Love Serve Remember Foundation. Visit Alanwatts.org for full talks from Alan Watts.
In this episode, Alan Watts explores:
If there could be a theory of the world that justifies and makes worthwhile the difficulties and suffering that we undergo.
The contemplation that an infinite omnipotent being would eventually get bored with being everything, so would begin to shield itself from this knowledge, and pretend to play the role of separate beings so it could experience the full thrill of waking up to itself.
The idea of reality as God playing a game of hide and seek with itself for it’s own excitement and cosmic joke.
The difference or potential complete non-difference between the experience and the experiencer.
That what you think of as outside yourself is actually just a hidden you.

I was a great Alan Watts fan in the 70s. Tonight I thought how much fun Alan would have in the age of AI and KZbin. Then I thought "He'd be doing exactly what he's doing in this video - recording his musings on a daily basis on his KZbin podcast."

I was listening to this podcast as I was falling asleep last night. Then I had a dream. Alan Watts came out from a destroyed building and I can't remember how he looked, but I knew it was him. I asked him: 'Isn't it suspicious that babies can't talk when they come into this world?' We both laughed and then I woke up. I was a bit weirded out and had a good chuckle. I'm still under the impression of that dream.

Thank you for sharing with all of us these amazing speeches , Alan was the greatest in deeply understanding not only the inner nature of human beings but also the development of the sense of spirituality that more or less eveyone has and how it manifests in the physical world , in many shapes and forms. I m really grateful to you and your father as listening (daily) to all of these teachings is really helping me (and i m sure anybody else who is following these videos) to understand so much more about life in general and also about myself , to lighten the difficulties and problems along the way and also in dealing with all the anxiety and depression

THANK YOU! I have listened to many many lectures by Alan Watts and this one is the best I have heard thus far. His presentation of this thought experiment is beautiful and very compelling. He starts playing creatively with very basic assumptions about the world and advances several theses, showing how to judge each by their merits and shortcomings. Gently and logically, the thought experiment leads to a place of non-duality.

Thanks for keeping the background music in the BACKGROUND! Very annoying when our hearing competes to listen to spoken word. Too many Watts videos have terrible music that competes instead of supporting hus spoken words. This is a model for how it can be done in a complimentary way. Many thanks!

Having consciously transcended from materialism to Ahun Bramasme, Being, knowing Self, as source, cause, and experience, Being became desire to cognize how boundless-awareness is experienced as materialism. Effortlessly, spontaneously, and naturally Being,-Brahma, witnessed as 'Self'-Brahma, became relatively expressed as my universe. I witnessed as the covalent atomic bonds of the entire universe changed resonant frequencies to Be this material universe. This jiva knows his universe to be himself. Thanks to your many gifts Dr. Chopra, Ahum Brahmamse 'Knows' from memory, 'Self' is Brahmomd. Bliss fills awareness. Your presence in awareness is deeply appreciated. Namaste! Stan

We want the long talks. Where he takes an hour to make a single point, and he only makes a handful of large points over a few hours. And by the end you realize the seemingly disparate ideas were all saying the same thing, the same one he always is. That's the Alan Watts experience. Yeah, the bootleg uploads may have been edited poorly, but at least they often entailed something like that. The crappy edits may have even been more representative of his message than this format. He's only ever getting warmed up in the first hour.

I feel this experiment all boils down to the individual concept of the self in the mass of society.. the self is defined as separate or not of outside objects/living things; I and many others view the self as everything INSIDE AND OUTSIDE the field of human consciousness. My query is: Does the experiment still work if this perception of self is the framework and basis of thought and if so, how??

This is kinda nutty cause I remember when I was a child and I would imagine what I would do if I was God, and I imagined that I would incarnate as humans and act out history myself and craft a super fascinating world while also being hidden in it, and then I realized that if that was what God did, our world wouldn’t be any different.
