As someone who at the age of 14 was chosen to give an experience on an assembly, these experiences are highly coached. Brief story: There was a brother who had a part on the assembly and he had searched high and low apparently for a young one who had the experience of being tempted at school but they had resisted temptation. He finally got in contact w my elders and one of my elders recommended me and that I might have a story, since I was such an outstanding example of faith in the congregation. When he initially contacted me I couldn't think of anything, however, after I got off the call my grandma pushed me to think of something. And finally she remembered this brief interaction I had told her about months ago. Essentially this kid at my school who i was friends with had asked me out and I had told him no bc I only date JWs. That was the whole story. However when I was telling this brother about it he kept asking things like, "Did you view this as a test from Satan?" The answer is no. However he clearly wanted me to say yes, so I said yes. "How did you think Jehovah would feel if you had said yes to this young man?" I hadn't thought at all about how Jehovah had felt. I just knew JWs only dated other JWs. However the answer I gave the brother was, "I knew Jehovah would be very disappointed in me if I said yes." "Were there any Bible principles that came to your mind that helped you to know how to respond." No there weren't, however I told the brother the principal about being unevenly yoked. "How did you feel after you did the right thing and rejected your classmates advances" The truth was that I didn't feel any type of way. In fact I didn't think about that incident again until this situation happened and this brother was asking me all these questions. The answer I gave was, "I felt happy knowing that I had made Jehovah's heart rejoice." The whole point was that it made me seem a lot more spiritual than I actually was and that I had put a whole lot more thought into this interaction than I actually had. However, it served it's purpose because it taught me that this is how much I should actually be thinking about my day to day interactions.

I made a mistake once when 10th grade gym teacher told a student picking on me to lay off because it was my conviction. Somehow i didnt see personal conviction and thought the word meant i was tied bound convicted to it by others, a religion, or cult-control. And i spoke up and siad NO this is MY belief and MY God. I am sure i perplexed him that i didnt realize i can have my own convictions and i didnt know i could apply that world proudly of myself. Thought it was an insult because everyone does play word games to corner you to make you a fool. Had a Canadian teacher in the USA make me stand out in the Hall for pledge & anthum. I was happy sitting and felt punished by her Canadian pride imposed on me. I felt raped by her (so stupid of her for the last 20 seconds). Teachers should not teach in their 20s.

It's interesting how they tell people how to feel with that weird wording technique: "WE don't feel ashamed... do WE? That would be absurd...Isn't that how WE feel??" I remember hearing that type of phrasing as a kid and realizing in the back of my mind that I didn't initially feel that way, but I guess that's how everyone else around me feels, so I should probably go along with that if I don't want to get into trouble. Lookinig at it now, I see that it's a subtle form of psychological manipulation to get the listeners to comply.

I have never seen a comment on KZbin I resonated with more than this one. My mother was insistent that I put that brochure in my knapsack on the first day of school since elementary school. It was an absolute nightmare. The first couple of days of school I used to tell her that I forgot, but by day five or six, she would become livid and she would make sure that the teacher knew. She would call the school and lay down All the rules and regulations of the religion. It was obnoxious and embarrassing for her to explain that I would have to sit outside the classroom during any sort of party, etc.. I’m so glad to be gone from that and if I ever have children of my own, I would never put through children of my torture. 35:10 A good teacher would never impose their beliefs on a student or question the student's own beliefs. As a teacher, I would have simply acknowledged the student's request for another assignment by saying, 'OK,' without asking for justification. @thomash.schwed3662
@thomash.schwed3662 21 күн бұрын
Actually, the term “watchtower” does appear in the Bible. However, it refers either to the “witness heap” (whence comes the name Gilead), the stone pile marking the agreement between Jacob and Laban in Genesis or to the structures atop which guards and watchmen would be stationed to serve as lookouts. (Genesis 31:22-55) It is never used to describe either a periodical or an organization. And, “Awake!” magazine ostensibly gets its title from the words attributed to Paul: “It is high time for you to awake.” (Romans 13:11) (Or, according to the “New World Translation”: “It is already the hour for you to awake.”) Indeed, from August 8, 1946, through December 22, 1977, that was the theme text which appeared on page 3 of each issue directly under the masthead. But, again, the language is referring, not to a periodical, but to the state of alertness required of professing followers of Christ.

I remember the chariot scene from the same drama, where Jehu meets Jonadab on the road to Samaria. Ironically, I also remember the opening, modern-day scene in which mention was made of the “Watchtower” series on Babylon the Great and how the sister receiving the shepherding call from the circuit servant and the field overseer expressed frustration over how her fleshly sister kept rejecting those issues. A couple of interesting side points regarding that drama: Part of it was actually taken from another drama which had been presented in the mid-seventies. (That particular drama was mainly focused on Elijah and Elisha.) In fact, for the two audio recordings from the Society, the same cast was used for the major characters, such as Jehu and Jezebel. What’s more, the Society shows part of the recording session for the 1990 version of the drama (the scene between Jehu and Jezebel, just before she is to be dropped) in the “Organization” film.

My ‘acts of faith’ as an unbaptized JW were kinda cool. In choir, they had Christmas concerts which I opted out of. Instead I was allowed to write and produce and perform my own song, which I would then have to show to the class. the first year the teacher let me do this, I got a standing ovation from my class. Considering I wrote the song about depression and isolation , I still got in trouble at home, simply bc the optics would be I wasn’t part of a ‘happy’ people (I wasn’t). Or the time I accidentally won a study body election without knowing what it actually meant, only that it sounded fun. Or when I created a thriving alternative to the school newspaper just so I could get my fictional stuff published, only to be told that was still a part of ‘worldly politics’. I wasn’t really coached to do any of this, so I feel for the kids in these interviews (and the comments) who lacked if not all autonomy through their formative years - only knowing what they were *not* supposed to do, and just waited for someone to tell them what they *should* do.

'we love people', or so they claim. and yet, when do you ever find them in poor areas of town? when do you find them in dark areas of a city? when do you see them speaking to the homeless, the drug impaired, or tent people? you don't. in my life, living in 22 different cities, i have never seen them in such areas, though i have lived in many. you will find soup kitchens, churches supplying shelter and meals, but, you will never find them. i guess their God has no love for such people. a few years ago, the governing body asked the congregations to welcome into their homes refugees. did they? even of their own faith? i have visited many of their congregations in many cities, and i have yet to see this so. this question of love, for them, is quite hypocritical. it seems to center around the refusal of military service, and little else. their ministry is mostly rural or suburban. so, how is it they can call themselves God's people, when their ministry is such as this?

The leaders are divorced from reality I WISH Americans were collectively this active in educating themselves and acting in their best political and humanitarian interests. Most people in real life are really not invested in politics and nobody cares enough about you to pressure you into doing anything. That type of urgency only exists online in certain echo chambers tbh The clip with the little girl was gut wrenching in every way.

Oh yeah!! At the assembly I went to, there was a woman that gave her experience at work (I think in place of the boy talking about the gay assignment). It was really crazy because the "challenge" she was facing was her coworkers nicknaming her "cult girl". I was so surprised that they allowed the word cult to even be said, honestly. The resolution of the whole situation was basically just that one of her coworkers didn't call her cult girl and ended up studying. Joy!

This bloke Mallefant clearly loves the sound of his own voice. How can anyone use so many words to say nothing. I remember the circuit assemblies from my past in this organisation. Everything on the programme was carefully rehearsed and scripted, even the chairman`s words of welcome. About 30% of the audience slept through most of the programme. The most active part of the assembly was backstage in the audit room where the money was counted and they always finished the programme with an appeal for money as there was always a shortfall!

The arrogance, talking down to the audience, thought-control, the speculation...using words like "possibly, might have, perhaps, maybe, would have, could". I remember when everything started to hit me, I was sitting in the Hall on a Sunday. We had a visiting speaker and he was making super broad statements about how bad people in the world are. And I thought about all the amazing, loving worldly people I knew. I was working in an assisted living facility at the time. My co-workers were amazing with the tenants, and the families were too. They went above and beyond for their kids, were there for their friends and family and took care of their parents and older friends, no matter their beliefs. I walked out of that meeting and the only other time I went to the Hall was a couple months later for the Memorial. After that i was doing REAL research and never went back.

It's English but not as most people understand it. The Jehovah's Witness talk constantly in loaded language terms. It's like a language within a language. What it appears to be saying on the surface to the untrained mind is one thing but to someone else very familiar with how their cult mind control works, the words and sentences they choose to use are loaded with an ulterior meaning usually guilt tripping their followers with some form of emotional blackmail to get their followers to carry out instructions which under more normal circumstances they would question the validity of the commands being given.

You are just as out of touch as they are. I was in school a very short time ago, and I speak frequently to people who still are in school, and the situations like the one presented at this assembly DO NOT HAPPEN. Even the “real” example within the program is not “promotion”. One kid can ask another to sign a card or a petition without that being “the gays being forced down our throats”. If you truly believe that schools in America are being overrun with homosexuals, you are trapped in your own world of make believe bc you do not want to acknowledge that something that makes you uncomfortable is not inherently wrong.

One thing that was really weird for me to observe is how members always say they have their “go bags” ready. I would wonder WHERE they think they are going with these bags when the tribulation hits. The organization has stated that there is no geographical location to go to like there was back on 66ad when the Roman army invaded and the Christians had to flee to the mountains of Pella. So, why are these members thinking they are going to flee somewhere? This made no sense to me. No critical thinking skills. Just magical thinking. Waiting for those instructions to blindly obey. And if the tribulation came, most likely the government would impose martial law and nobody would be fleeing to a central location or delivering a “judgment message”. But the organization just keeps telling people to obey the instructions that they will give to save their life. What sort of instructions would you give during a grid down scenario where the government orders you stay in place? Where are the people going to be “instructed” to go? I don’t know. This makes no logical sense to me. Hearing someone say to just obey no matter what does not sit well with me. That is a red flag for me. Never sat well.

Thanks for another year of good content. Merry Christmas! At about 32:35 you make a great point- this personalizing of archetypal stories. It’s not enough to learn a lesson from David and Goliath like from an Aesop fable. You are expected to become David, and any opposer on up to Satan himself is Goliath. Even minor failings have cosmic significance- you’re not just disappointing yourself or your parents, you’re disappointing God and making Satan happy. This was part of the mentality that led to my father taking his own life. He was mentally ill, but in my conversations with him in his final days he had internalized this cosmic struggle, saw himself in a tug of war between God and Satan. It was a very real factor in his death. Parents should think twice about teaching these stories to their kids.

This was such a good video. I had never really thought about the differences between circuit assemblies and regional conventions. I was just thrilled it was one day vs three lmao. But you're so right. It IS creepier! Also, when I did WT comments for an assembly, it was insane to me how controlling they were about wording when we did rehearsals. (Not to mention the more than usual high standards of what to wear). So I can only imagine these poor interviewees having to be personal and vulnerable yet not even being able to speak from the heart, especially the kids. Ugh. And then you're love bombed and praised for it so of course you don't think about any of that stuff. You're just happy you are considered spiritually strong for a while. It's like you can take a few deep breaths before you're under a microscope again. It's twisted as hell!
