Interesting: I see that in this ride Disney did use the same equipment to provide three different ride experiences and two different adventures. Excellent! So, I wonder why they don't do the same thing for rides like Star Tours and the Millennium Falcon ride in Galaxy's Edge. Seems like a no-brainer way to increase park re-visits.

A pro tip for the ones wishing to try avoiding bad side effects of this ride, given by a real life pilot (not me, though): due to brain-ear "mis-interactions", sickness may happen. The process is "mediated" by your eyes. The sequence is: you start feeling a little dizzy, it escalates, then eyes try to mediate things, they loose control, start moving erratically (called "nistagmo") and all the overflow data between eyes, ears and brain makes you sick. So, when riding this ride, choose one visually immovable real physical spot in front of you, preferably in the center of your field of view, but AWAY from the screen. Not an image, but a real object, like a button or cabin decoration. In my ride, I chose a physical plastic detail below the screen in the cabin. Whenever during the ride you start to feel dizzy due to the spinning (happened to me twice), quickly move your eyes away from the screen and fixate them on the chosen immovable spot and stay there as if your life depended on it. The fixated eyes keep from jumping like crazy ("nistagmo") and, by being immovable themselves, inform the brain "it's ok, we are in motion, but not out of control". The ears keep yelling "heeeeelp!", but the eyes inform the brain "stay calm, everything is ok" and the brain relaxes. This actually cuts the escalating loop of dizziness and sickness before it even begins and, only once you stop feeling dizzy - because you do - then you may return your eyes to the screen and join back the action, enjoying the ride. Oh, and DO NOT close your eyes: you need them open, fixated, to inform your brain everything is ok. Works like magic... at least, it did to me (as I said, twice). I left the ride with NO dizziness nor sickness or any other side effect but a great "wohoo!" feeling. Of course, this is something totally individual, but I'm sharing with you here in case it is useful to you too. Cheers! :D

It does. I am a student pilot who has flown aerobatics. This ride simulates 2.5 G or 2.5 times your own weight. Just like flying, the best thing to do is to keep looking forward and KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN.

IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW! 😲 I rode the Green Mission for years and once I realized I was fine with it, I decided "Oh, let's try the Orange Mission!" (Keep in mind: I'm a huge wimp.) The Orange Mission starts, I'm excited....and then I almost passed out. Like, the world was pinholed and I was actively losing consciousness. I had to breathe heavily and fast for the remainder of the ride to keep from blacking out. Side note: I was sitting next to a kid who was no more than 6 and she had a blast.

I have syncope problems & lower blood pressure so I can pass out or come close to it kinda easily sometimes (like on airplane take offs, those spinning swing rides at carnivals, standing up too fast lol etc.) and something that helps me a lot is a technique I learned about from fighter pilots. They can experience quite a few G’s, so what they do to prevent passing out is basically rapidly clench/tighten their abdominal muscles and then keep them tightened for a bit (remember to make sure to breath! It can be easy to hold your breath when first trying this). This technique raises your blood pressure, keeping blood perfusion to your brain adequate, thus preventing loss of consciousness. Pilots have specials suits that do this automatically for them now (tightens around them) but they are still taught this skill in case the suit were to ever fail. Ever since I have learned about this I do it every time im feeling like I might pass out and it works like a charm (also make sure to stay hydrated. That always helps) You can also look up videos for more detailed instructions on how to do it Granted, I’m not a doctor or anything and don’t know you so take what I’m saying worth a grain of salt. But, the fact that you said you felt like you might pass out vs just being dizzy tells me it might’ve been due to what the G’s were doing to your blood pressure vs motion sickness. Just thought I’d share it case it may ever be helpful :)

That’s a cool idea! But unfortunately, the ride has motion sensors that detect anything that moves or isn’t supposed to be in there at all, even if it’s a small candy wrapper that fell on the ground under a capsule, the sensors will detect it and will not let the ride start until we personally go find it and get it out.

I mean, not unfortunate😅 it’s how we keep the ride from starting if someone gets stuck inside. If the sensors detect anything moving that isn’t in a capsule the doors won’t even close

The ride is pretty sure equippped with many safetly systems and probably some IR cameras outside to see weird IR radiations outside ride. We know the camera in dark needs IR light to see something, but it will confuse some systems and put ride to halt. Another idea is try get camera with very high sensitive and big sensor, to see something. A normal GoPro camera might not enough for it due small sensor. I know for example Sanyo VPC-HD1000 has big sensor, so it can see bit more than our human eye. You need find camera with big sensor, and make sure it has manual settings to crank up brightness for example.

I assume when you say, 'outside of the cabin' you are referring to how the capsules and centrifuge look - what the employees see. (I don't know if it's still this way, but I was among the original riders in 2003 - when there were no green/orange different experiences). As you are waiting in line, you can see the apparatus through the window, and the employees moving around. The lights are on 'outside the cabin' - if I understand your question.

The same thing happened to me. I managed to stay calm but I felt like pounding on the door to have somebody let me out too. Glad to know I was not the only one I'm sure there's tons of others. that ride was crazy.... My son who is 17 got off the ride and said, "wow... that was advanced". Lol.... It's funny now... I was terrified at the time. In fact I think I have ptsd because of it. 😑

Am I the only one that loves mission space? The building is beautiful, the soundtrack is great, and the ride stays pretty true to EPCOTS original mission of edutainment showing of real technology, and science with an element of thrill, and future optimism. I know it really messes people’s stomachs up but I get violently carsick and have never had a problem with it.

Fun fact: the large "space station" (similar to 2001:ASO) in the cue area actually spun when the ride first opened. Unfortunately the motor system that spun it failed, and the only way to replace it would be to remove the roof of the building, thus closing the ride for months, and costing large amounts of $$$. So it just stays as a static display.

Sort of - it's was a mechanical issue rather than electrical - electrically, it's a very, very basic system. Notice on the hub of the "Gravity Wheel" - that's logo/emblem from Horizons!

Hello!👋🏻 former mission space cast member here! I loved working this ride! Your explanation and model was spot on👍 haha I remember working in the bay, which was the circle shaped room you walk around to stand on your numbers and watch another video before you get in the capsule, I loved to look through the crack in the exit doors to watch the ride work from the outside, you could see the floors drop and the ride start to spin! You could also hear the screams haha you could tell when the ride was spinning either by listening for screams, or looking through the exit door cracks. I have so many stories I could tell. I’ll answer anyone’s questions too!!

We got that a lot as mission space cast members, we would hear people screaming to let them out once the capsules closed all the time. It’s a tighter fit than most people expect. As long as the ride hasn’t started yet, which usually takes a while cause we have to close all the capsules, if we hear you screaming to get out we will let you out

The moon slingshot feels pretty cool, but I agree. It's really just intense for a few seconds at the start. As for avoiding dizziness, keeping my head straight seems to do the job

I think there are some people who just aren't nearly as affected by fast but smooth movement. I'm one of them; Orange track only kind of felt like something, and I had similar reactions to riding an enterprise (those spinning rides that tilt vertically) and the parts of steel roller coasters that aren't drops or launches-I rode Rock'n'Rollercoaster twice and had to be told that it goes upside down.

Rode this as a cocky 13 year old during it's first year in operation. I ended up nauseated af that didn't dissipate after it concluded. My stepmother insisted it was heat exhaustion. But it still lingered after being in the central AC of the hotel for hours. I didn't eat that night yet still vomited a minor amount of Gatorade before crashing for the night. By the time we woke up the next morning, I knew I was actually sick, but my stepmother would hear none of it. Determined not to lose $$ on my pass, she all but physically forced me to eat a plate full of food and down a 32oz Gatorade. By the time we were parking, I was doubled over in the backseat, nearly sobbing. My dad got out and was sliding the door of the van open, legitimately concerned, while my stepmother finally lost her patience and got in my face, telling me to stop being dramatic. And just as she got within a few inches of my nose, that plate of food and 32oz Gatorade made a reappearance... right down the front of her white blouse. Worth every minute of agony the next three days brought. And the one and only time I ever had Salmonella.

Yeah that is my take away. Graviton never made me sick when I was young but this definitely made me queasy. I'm glad I did it but I'm also glad I didn't need (barely) the bag I grabbed just in case. IF I'd had a full stomach or it had lasted another minute or two I'd have put that bag to some good use.

Former Mission space cast member here: haha yes no one knows the floors actually drop, I remember being told how to evacuate people from the ride if there was an emergency like a fire, we have to press the E-Stop, which is almost never used, and the cimulators will stop mid air and we have to get everyone out with ladders because the floors would be too far down for anyone to jump out. Mostly though if we need to stop the ride there’s a different way so that the ride will just slowly go back to its original position with the floors up, but for a real emergency like a fire, that would take too long. It’s been a few years so I might be rusty but that’s what I remember💁🏼‍♀️

@@bobfrogs5990 hey! Sorry for the late reply😄 I feel ya I’m also very scared of roller coasters, but I have ridden mission space and worked there, and I don’t mind the ride. I guess, to answer your question, it depends on what exactly you’re afraid of when it comes to roller coasters. If you’re afraid of heights or falling off the tracks or your seatbelt somehow coming loose, I can assure you you’ll have the opposite concern at mission space. Since the ride is a tightly enclosed simulator with hard and tight restraints holding you down, we typically had worried guests getting claustrophobic and feeling too constricted in the capsules, so I promise you won’t be thinking about falling out or about the height, you can’t see anything at all outside of the capsule, you can barely even tell which way you’re moving when the ride is moving. To help those guests worried about claustrophobia I used to let them get in the capsule, then I’d close the capsule for a few seconds and open it back up, then I’d ask them if they still wanted to ride now that they know how it would feel for them inside, you can always ask a cast member to do that for you. If you get in and we close the capsule and you realize it’s too enclosed for you, the sooner you scream for us to let you out the easier it’ll be for us to figure out which capsule you’re in and let you out. But once the ride starts, we will not stop it unless there’s an emergency like a fire. We can hear faint screams if they’re loud enough when the ride is in motion but we can’t actually hear if someone really needs help, and at that point we are focused on the next group coming in. On the other hand if you are like me, and you don’t like the way roller coasters make you feel, when they drop, make a sharp turn, go extremely fast, and give you that pressure feeling in your stomach, you miiiiiiiiiight not like mission space, or you might love it! It’s difficult to describe the feeling mission space gives you. The ride does not drop you, so you don’t feel like you’re dropping or falling. However, the ride spins extremely fast, but you don’t feel yourself spinning like on the teacups. Most people don’t even know it spins at all. The ride is designed to simulate what it feels like if you’re taking off into space on a rocket ship. You’re pushed so hard against you’re seat that you can’t lift your head off the seat due to the pressure. Similar to the feeling of being pushed back into your seat when a plane is taking off, but much more intense. And you experience this kind of pressure three times in one ride on mission space. It spins super fast, then stops and gently rocks around, then spins super fast again, and so on. Due to this motion, and having tv screens in your face showing a rocket taking off, many people feel dizzy, disoriented, or car sick. If this happens, do not close your eyes, and do not look around. Look down from the screen and focus your eyes on just one of the buttons in front of you and don’t look away from that button until the end of the ride. That should help. Personally I liked the ride, as long as I don’t feel like I’m dropping I’m fine. I’m not really a ride person at all so I wouldn’t voluntarily go on mission space by myself but if I was with friends who wanted to ride I’d ride with them, I don’t mind it. Biggest tip don’t ride mission space after you eat. I’d wait like an hour after eating😅 and ride mission space BEFORE you go eat at the new space restaurant right next to it lol. Also pay attention to the warnings, pay attention to the videos, and listen to the cast members. The queue is fun and distracting and very well themed but make sure you listen to the cast members and ask them any questions you may have, they want to help you and they want to make sure you’re comfortable. @@bobfrogs5990 I’m sorry if I scared you haha😂 in my opinion it’s really not that bad, but I want to make sure everyone is comfortable with it because everyone has different tolerance levels for rides! I had a friend who loves roller coasters, rides every roller coaster at six flags, and rode mission space and had to go back to the hotel and lay down for the rest of the day because of the headaches it gave him. On the other hand I can’t stand roller coasters but I don’t mind mission space at all. So mission space is not a roller coaster but it is intense. When I rode it when it first opened, I swear that when you landed you thought it was over but the edge gave away and you slide down the side to the bottom of the gorge. I remember my brothers and I were in one of the pods by ourselves one time. 😏 When you’re about to fall off of the cliff the narrator says “Don’t. Move. A muscle.” And we immediately started flailing around and screaming trying to move as much as the harness would allow us to. We also made loud moaning sounds when we went into hyper sleep. I belong to a coaster club and we sometimes get to stay after the park closes to the public. On one such occasion, as the employees were still going through the usual safety warnings (keep arms and legs inside the car, etc.), people started acting out just the opposite, like sticking their arms and legs out as far as the restraints would allow. It got pretty ridiculous, and pretty funny. The park employees were totally into it, too. Eventually, it got so extreme that the safety spiel took longer than the ride! Good times! Sounds like you and your brothers would have fit in perfectly.

I rode this ride once in my late teens not long after it opened and my heart had palpitations for a while after riding. I have not been on it since and would probably be scared to even try it on the green line. I used to go to city carnivals and rode the gravitrone so much. I remember visiting EPCOT in 2019 and riding the orange version of Mission Space for the first time (my previous ride-throughs were on the green version as I didn't really like thrill rides before then). It was a bit intense at first, but I got used to it after 15-ish seconds. The wait time was practically reduced to nothing later that day, allowing my friend and I to ride it several more times before the park closed. This experience has made the orange version of Mission Space one of my favorite rides at EPCOT.

I think I walked sideways for the next hour or so. Only thing more intense was the full nose down, zero-G, plunge in a C-130. Lost lunch, breakfast and possibly the previous night's dinner. I remember going on this ride as a kid. I had to be taken to a room once the ride was over caused I couldn't stop hyperventilating/not breathing at all. My body went into some weird fit. Never went on it again.

I was 7 when I went on this ride. At launch, I felt like I couldn't breathe like the air was being suffocated out of me and I NEVER understood why. I wasn't sick afterwards, I just remember the whole ride I was trying to focus on keeping myself breathing. Now knowing that it deal with g forces and such, this makes so much sense lol

And that's at only like, 2.5 Gs. The astronauts on the Apollo missions would have experienced a peak just under 4 Gs at the end of the first stage, and as I understand trained fighter pilots can pilot at aircraft 5-7 Gs without a suit, and up to 9 Gs with G-suit.

Fantastic video! The 3D models are an absolutely brilliant way to explain the engineering alongside the rider experience, especially since the ride makes copious use of spacial disorientation to give the riders a feeling of acceleration & movement (which is really hard to conceptualise from 2D animation) 👍

Great video and info. I remember getting to ride this the year that it opened and was so worried about motion sickness because I do not do well on spinning rides but can handle roller coasters. I was surprised that I actually did not get that bad of motion sickness because of the screen and buttons to press as you ride. I also remember my Dad went to go on it a second time and I declined because it was pretty intense as is and he regretted the second go and was green the whole rest of the day lol.

The ride vehicle itself doesn’t rotate, just the platform it’s on.
