I remember they interviewed one of the engineers at Otis elevators for a documentary piece on the ride’s construction and he said “When Disney came to us and asked for an elevator that intentionally drops it was a real challenge because our whole business is making elevators that don’t”

I was too small when I rode it. They didn't have seatbelts, just a single bar at the same height for people of all sizes in your row, it was no where close to touching me, the ride lifted me far off my seat and I had to hang on with my arms to keep from slipping out.

I worked at Disney back in 2016. I got to see the behind the scenes things at TOT as part of job training. The small group of new hires I was in were led up on the roof of that building, and in a service elevator. We saw things going on while it was in operation.

It's intersting to find out that my family and I were not the only ones who went on this ride with absolutely no knowledge on how the ride works. I'm Korean, and my family and I went on this ride in Disneyland Tokyo. We thought this was some kind of a haunted mansion, so we were expecting to see some disney ghosts. I was the only one who could understand Japanese, but I wasn't a navite speaker either, so it took some time to finally understand the explanation of the ride, and it was at the very last moment right before the drop sequence. I told my family, "uhh..they say we're going to drop." All of my family froze, and then...! Whoa, I'll never forget that experience. And from then on, I never go on a ride before I understand what kind of a ride it is.

I do really like the paris version of the ride with how they've recently changed it to slightly alter the story that the little girl who passes away in the elevator comes to warn you and try to help/hinder you from getting out, talking about how the creatures in the elevator haft have found you. Also great when it all goes quiet except for her and she says "they know you're here, whatever you do, don't scream" and then it immediately drops you along with laughter from the creatures, really cool addition!!

Fun Fact: The rise and drop patterns when originally built was about a 1000 different ways. Years ago they somehow added more patterns, so the chances of you getting the same ride twice is very slim. Though one difference could be you get the top door to open for your picture or the 2nd (one undernearth). Perhaps you could be suspended for a second and have the ride shake. Regardless you can ride it over and over and it'll somehow be different every time.

We went on this ride 1yr ago. We had been on most every other ride. We were looking for a short line and found this one. WE HAD NO CLUE what it was. My wife hates heights, and until we were in line, we then learned where all the screaming was coming from! It was amazing and all encompassing! Then when we fell, went back up, fell again and again, my wife lost her mind and I lost control and laughed so freaking hard! A memory that will last a life time! Such an amazing ride!

I got stuck on that ride a few weeks back just as we had loaded the elevator for the drop component. We were stuck for 10 minutes in the dark before someone finally talked to us. Then they turned on the lights for another 15. We were finally told, sorry you have to do the whole drop sequence with the lights on. I've never rushed off a ride so quickly.

Just rode this about 2 weeks ago in Orlando. It was 100x better than I expected, (as was the case with most of Disney World). The car riding out of the elevator was such a surprise. I loved it. My 9 yr old daughter refused to consider a second go on the tower. (Hopefully she hasn’t been too traumatised). So glad I was able to experience it.

I'm an Aussie. Disneyland has been my dream since I was a child. Day 3 of 4 we get to California Adventure and we were first in the line. When the lines opened we didn't know which way to go so we just decided to allow the crowds to push us. We thought "it is a Disney ride...no ride here can scare us"...we got on this ride first row with NO IDEA what was about to happen...then it started and I screamed every fucking profanity I knew at the top of my lungs. Literally the ability to lift 330 lbs 100 feet in one minute, generally by use of a pulley system. This is an estimate, since the idea for it was observed by watching ponies pull 220 lbs by James Watt, and he reasoned that the capability of a full size horse was about 1.5 times that of a pony. 330 lbs is the force exerted continuously on average for one minute, equaling its mass times acceleration caused by gravity, multiplied by the 100 foot distance it travels gives you work. Since horsepower is work/time, completing this work in 1 minute gives you a measure of power consumed over the course of that 1 minute.

BasedBeard Jones While the ride IS interactive, the interactive elements are limited in order to specifically prevent a terrified child from “ruining” it. Plus, if the riders are less skilled, the ride actually becomes more thrilling, because you will be hit and jostled more often. So far, reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. That said, if you don’t like simulation rides (like star tours, soarin’ or flight of passage) you probably won’t enjoy it. That’s fine, Disney has plenty of other styles of rides for you. I haven’t had a chance to ride it myself, but I have ridden flight of passage (which was one of the most remarkable experiences of my life) and with a few more years of tech advancement under its belt, I am sure Disney will have provided an unparalleled experience. The other aspect that differentiates Disney rides from simple flight sims or rollercoasters is its theming. The pre show elements and story telling, as well as amazing immersive elements such as scent and temperature manipulation make most of Disney’s rides unforgettable, and other than Universal’s Harry Potter lands, unique in the world.

The first time I went on the ride in Orlando they still had a system where one lap belt went across three people, and I (12yo) got sandwiched between two... larger individuals. I was nervous the whole way through, and as we passed through the 5th dimension, and I could feel the radiant heat of the hot Florida sun in the main shaft, I held on for dear life. Then we dropped and I floated a good two-three inches off of the seat. It was the most horrifying experience I had had up to that point. I have gone on that ride like six more times since then, and it is just as frightening everytime and I love it.

Rewatching this in 2020, and I still enjoy it, and still love all of the animations to visually demonstrate the engineering. 🙂 Unfortunately it does also remind me that the 'increased capacity' doesn't do much in practice at Tokyo DisneySea. When I tell you that I went in winter, on a freezing Tuesday morning (not a weekend or holiday either), most of the people in the theme park that day weren't even kids (I literally only saw a handful of children in 9+ hours of being there because it was a regular work/school day), there was no fastpass that day for some reason (no queue jumping), and it took almost 3 HOURS to get on the ride! The line was just insane and moved incredibly slowly, and this with all 3 of the elevator shafts working. 😕

As a person who does research to get rid of fear, this video is great! I grew up afraid of the infamous 13 stories drop but now I see it’s nothing but a 4-5 story drop with imaginering on its game. Fun fact! The sidewalk leading up to the ride is 2 degrees upward to give you a feeling of unbalance and uneasiness.

I was lucky enough to ride this twice yesterday. Once in the morning then even after a technical delay was able to ride again in the night. As a life long star wars fan it was a dream come true. I was so emotional walking into a room full of stormtroopers. Absolutely blown away.

My dads friend was an imagineer, I remember him telling me how this worked probably back in 2017, after my first time going to Disney Land/California Adventure. He even showed me pictures of him down underneath where all the stuff that works the ride is. Very cool! That ride still scared the crap out of me 😂

I got stuck on this ride when I was 9. The first drop happened, then the elevator went up again, and then everything stopped, some dim lights went on, and a voice came on saying "your ride will continue in just a moment". We could see our own reflections ahead of us, almost like we were looking at a dim mirror of sorts. We were stuck like this with the same message replaying for at least an hour. Finally, some maintenance people went up a ladder and called to us from under the ride, because we were stuck so high up in the ride. Eventually they found a way to have us climb out and go down the ladder, one by one, being guided by maintenance workers. It was terrifying for me as a 9 year old, and I was crying nearly the whole time. After we got off the ride, my mom told my dad that she was secretly terrified that another elevator car would fall on us from above, or that we would free fall into the pits of hell.

My 2 favorite rides on my first trip to Orlando 15 to 20 years ago were the Tower of Terror at Disney and Back To The Future at Universal. Thank God the Tower is still around. LOVE IT and its random drops, plus the fact that it pulls you down faster than gravity. If the Back To The Future simulator attraction were still around, I'd want to know the engineering of that one also.

I’ve probably gone on this ride 50+ times over the last 10 years or so and I experienced my first breakdown on it yesterday! It was in the 5th dimension scene just before the wall slides apart and the ride vehicle enters the drop shaft. It’s interesting to hear that this is the most common place for the ride to go down! If I’m being honest it frightened me because it appears that when this ride goes down, the priority is not to switch any lights on or make any announcements because we hat in the dark and silence for over 5 minutes haha.

Theyre gonna have to eventually. The contract to be able to base a ride off the Twilight Zone will soon expire. The Guardians version was made early to see how it would work out, and people like it. The original was very dear to my heart, but the new version is amazing and super fun.

I went to Disneyland for the guardians of the galaxy themed ride and it was very thrilling and the riders around me loved it too. I love the twilight zone themed ride (after all Orlando is the closest park) but If there is a need to get rid of the twilight zone, I trust that Disney will do a good job to replace it in justice.

The issue comes with the fact that if they replace tower of terror to a different theme, they have to redo the entirety of sunset Blvd as tower of terror is essentially the main part of the land.

supersuato123 Disneyland is our “home park”, but there a ton of reason to visit WDW for great rides where there’s no counterpart at Disneyland; in addition to the vastly superior Tower of Terror, you’ve got Seven Dwarves Mine Train, Toy Story Land, Mission Space, Frozen Ever After, Expedition Everest, Flight of Passage and Navii River Journey. Plus, there’s a bunch of new rides on the way; Guardians coaster, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, Ratatouille and the Tron Coaster, so you might want to plan a trip around when some of those will be open.
