It's situations like that when a Create Food and Water spell comes in real handy. We had our party behind enemy lines once and the thing that saved us was a Daerns Instant Fortress. It allowed us to rest and get back the spells we needed to continue our journey. That fortress took some damage but allowed us to have a good defensive position when we got attacked.

Video was great! I always ran with rations, but you are making a good case that maybe it should be reserved for specific type of game (like this one). For getting lost, I like to factor in preparation and choice. For example, if they bring a guide, if they have detailed instruments and the night sky is not covered, if they decide to stop moving when there is heavy rain and bad weather, if they follow a river/road, etc. then they can't get lost. They can only get lost in bad conditions/decisions. I like your system of trading movement for food (or food chance).

Thanks! Good ideas to avoid being lost!

Daniel - I really like the slowed movement to increase likelihood of finding food / water mechanic. I play resources as at least a moderate consideration in my campaign. Of course, the presence of a Druid, Ranger, Barbarian or a character with skill in hunting / fishing, foraging or tracking would affect outcomes, but I do plan to use this in my up coming sessions. A cleric with the ability to cast Create Food & Water (3rd level spell) is highly valuable for this style of Old School play.

For sure - of course most of those classes do not exist in BX 😊

@@BanditsKeep Im always hesitant about that, i wanna write a novel for this stuff eventually. But ive had a lot of inspiration just off the words ‘First Mortals’ and i just stole the Elric Saga’s Chaos Lords Idea. Your lawful language discussions, and methodology around manipulating the stat blocks you have was also very eye opening. Ive been able to change players reactions to the language they use when i tell them “Celestial, and Infernal are language of specific alignments. Lawful, or chaotic, perhaps even good or evil methods of truly speaking. Saying anything in either tongue risks the universe reacting to you too.” Its made players change what they say and do and how they react to seeing those words on a item or dungeon wall. As such those concepts let me ground a lot of cosmology at once into game-able material, and to that end in terms of direct adventures…. ive got a ( more like the start to a )mega dungeon staring an Psionic Brain in a giant Jar, minor dungeons in the tombs of dead dragons, a set of rather effective bandits that choked a region ive dubbed Riley’s Raiders, a series of temples both ruined and functioning to my interpretation of the Old Gods, ive gotten really into my wizard’s towers and hag huts… uhhh ive also worked on multiple personal touches to the standard fantasy races. You and some other creators have really made me think about why a creature or race is in my setting, plus what details i could specifically add to them. For example ive mixed my kobolds with silkworms, and wasps for incredibly interesting results. Uhhh…The finding the lost race section i came up with multiple custom ones which was a blast to write. I’m a 5th edition DM but my style has always been reminiscent of basic dnd or whats now the OSR. The consistent content about the mechanics of this kind of story telling has been invaluable and it has sured up my ability immensely. Applying anything learned to the system i use is also very easy. This is clearly a mindset of how to play more than specific system to play. It makes relating to or using this (comparative to me) old material so easy. It feels like i discovered that next step further into something from you and creators like yourself.

Kinda reminds me of Xenophon's Anabasis the Story of the Ten Thousand that had to flee Persia and get back home while being chase by the Persians. Or if you like the movie Warriors it was also based on the story of Xenophon

26:00 You could consider adopting a sort of "hexflower" random generation for the map, so you've got a weighted chance of different terrain types and features based on the previous roll. You might not even need to generate a map ahead of time. You can also either have a parallel weather system, or just have weather events as a type of obstacle e.g. a storm blows in and stops your movement for the day.

Hex flowers are great

I've borrowed a similar idea from Planar Compass, using it for a game where the party is traveling by airship through the elemental Plane of Air. It's amazing for extremely large maps, so you don't have to map the insane amount of terrain if you don't want to.

Hey there. Thanks for the content! I just wanted to give a quick note, I found my way here from other D&D related content and in the first 20 seconds you dropped a name of a book I'm not familiar with and a bunch of acronyms I had no idea what mean to the point that I thought maybe this video wasn't for me. The topic of conversation made me want to stick around and once you got more into it I realized I am familiar with some of those acronyms (OSR notably), but I just wanted to give you a heads up how a newer viewer might react to that kind of intro. I hope this comes off as constructive as that's the way I intended it. I really do appreciate the content and anyone who is willing to put themselves out there to help other people have a better game experience is worth their weight in gold in my book. Good luck with the channel and everything you do!

Would the movement force you to break down the hexes to 2 hrs per hex? Wouldn't this make it easier to calculate based on the rate modifiers for terrain?

@Bandit Keep Hello, friend, posted my 1st real Gaming/Book video for my former news channel. It may seem a bit much since I'm currently combining the Ebook story of the 2 main characters with the Game side of it, working on both currently, melding them with the intent on separating both once finished with the story part. I am funding the Ebook part of it but the goal is that future Kickstarter, Tabletop game based on my Ebook, it's 2 main characters and this new world to explore, the Veil....the game with it's unique 2 tiered combat system, unique, since 1 form of combat is fast 1 on 1 DnD like for 1 on 2 or more...and the other is 1 on 1 for more detailed/realistic combat. Looking forward to introduce that as well. Anyway, I would greatly appreciate a Like and a quick viewing, start at 27 20, on How to create a funny...just posted today...and give me your insight knowing I'm blending 2 projects into one, Book and Game. Have a great one, brother, and keep creating good content!
