It's been an honestly lifechanging experience to get to talk and work with the developers at Fun Dog, and I hope that I've translated their vision to you well. Being able to share a universe I find beautiful and inspiring with others who share my same tastes is the thing I love doing most in the world, and you all have made that possible in a way I never would have expected, so thank you all for showing up for these pieces, regardless of their subject matter. Forever Winter will be, like I said in a prior video, like the Heavy Metal Magazine on the middle of the stack in the bottom shelf in the library; it's the Dragon's Heaven OVA, or Venus Wars, or the Nausicaa Manga, or World War Robot; something many people won't be into or might not get . I don't talk passionately about games because I think they'll blow up or be popular; the media I love HITS for me in some way, and I make these videos to try and explain why. Not everything I like will be for everyone - But if it IS for you, you're the homie. Hope you've enjoyed these videos, and I'm excited to keep making them. Cheers Riloe

I never would have heard about it if it wasn't for stumbling across your first video on it, nor do i think i would've ended up subscribing to your channel despite your other content before it being very good in its own right, i just wouldn't have gotten over the default apathy of browsing the internet these days. On the topic of the game's understated humor: That diagram of Toothy's biofuel bags is interesting because it describes the process in which prisoners are captured and digested by the mech for fuel, only for that little notice to appear in the bottom right corner, "Plastic bags are dangerous! To avoid danger of suffocation, do keep this away from children!" Like HUH.

The Cow Balloon section really reminded me of Ace Combat 7. As you're destroying a giant superweapon or drones that threaten the security of the world your AWACS will be there talking about food, your buddy will be thinking about returning home and telling his son about his war stories, and more small details like that all over the game.

I really like the section mentioning the humanity and humor even in this dark world. I've often said the most important part of a dark piece of media is a little bit of light to latch onto. It can't be misery 100% all the time. It's why in certain works like Berserk, my favorite moments are the quiet ones like the characters walking on the beach or looking at the stars. Or in 40k, the Orks are absolute goofballs a lot of the time (while still being quite scary other times). You just need time to breathe in these kinds of worlds.

It's really interesting how this new era of the Post-Apocalypse is different from the ones that emerged from the old USSR cold-war era culture (wasteland, fallout, mad max, dr strangelove, red dawn, terminator etc), now we have this new cold-war with China which (for better or worse) evokes a terrifying vision of a world wide collapse and a new distinct form of the post-apocalypse, I wonder what else emerges from this troubling era.

I really hope they add those more "humanitarian" missions as time goes on, particularly if you get to see the people your helping. Perhaps even some way to more organically interact with the soldiers you encounter, like being able to patch up a wounded solider you come across on the battlefield and carry them to safety. Could even develop into a more fleshed out bartering system, where you could trade supplies like alcohol, cigarettes and food to soldiers in exchange for safe passage (I.E the don't shoot you unless you shoot at them or start looting their stuff/friends corpses).
@riloegaming
@riloegaming 4 ай бұрын
Right now they are very basic and gameified (press E on specific spot type beat) but that mission where you bring a wounded guy some cigs is in the game. While the gameplay is super simplistic, there's this authentically human and sincere tone to the quests and NPC dialogue that sells them to me, and they're my favorite quests in the game.

I have instantly got respect for the team for creating a dark future world that doesn't go full on nihilism and cynicism like 40K nor embracing comedy like Fallout or The Wasteland. Just because the world is dying and horrible things are happening don't mean **you** should be a horrible person, lack any emotions and simple desires. Neither people around you should stop being humans.
@TangiersIntrigue
@TangiersIntrigue 4 ай бұрын
Frankly, this vision that insists humans will always be selfish in extreme situations is contradicted by our very history of community-driven existence. The bleak cynicism of humans always turning on each other feels more unrealistic than many "magic" plot devices those settings use. How even after so much indoctrination, WWI soldiers still crossed the trenches during Christmas to mingle. How many franchises ignore this particular feature of humans, it just makes the setting feel less real. This, on the other hand, is the opposite. Even on such a bleak world, humanity still shines through.

True, good sci-fi has always and ever been an examination of the human condition under the lens of a future setting that’s based on the trends of the tech and culture of the current age. It’s taking what we have _now_ and saying “what happens to us if we can push this just a little bit further than currently possible?” The Forever Winter is a fantastic addition to the sci-fi genre which, unfortunately, means it will inevitably be a little prophetic in time.

As someone who has been playing this game since its early access launch earlier this week…the atmosphere is gripping. Hearing bullets whiz overhead as I’m trying to loot a container or some poor soldiers corpse for food and ammo is really a different feeling when you’re not “That Guy”. From soldiers running up on you thinking you’re the enemy then only to be saved by cybernetic zombies throw themselves at said soldiers giving you a split second chance to escape. My gameplay style in most games was to always pick a fight but in this game, I’m more hesitant and more times than not the only times I’ve really engaged in combat was either due to a quest requirement to eliminate X amount of a factions forces or self defense. I’ve done scav runs so efficiently that I didn’t have to fire a single round, just looted as much as I could and ran for the extraction point. I can’t wait for this game to progress in the future and to see the final end product which is a game that immerses me into the role of a survivor just trying to see another day

I looked back towards him, past the red smoke billowing near my wounded buddy and the medics covering on the bank of a canal, and he was waving at me. He had eaten two eye holes and one mouth hole into the weird bread slice from an MRE and was wearing it like a mask. He yelled “check it out dude haha!” and started darting his tongue through the mouth hole. During an engagement with a sniper and overwatch for a medevac. I laughed not because it was really funny, more because I honestly couldn’t tell if I was tripping balls or not anymore. It’s one of the most vivid memories I have of all that.

@@SnoopRocket I still miss my 249. You know the special delight everyone gets from watching the under-tall carry their body weight a few times over. I remember loading up our humvee in Kuwait for the drive to Baghdad. I swear there were foot deep holes in the sand for every step I took. One of my vivid's would be the chunk of roof missing one morning from the building we slept in at our FOB. Hooray for the mortar shell not detonating! I think what The Forever Winter encapsulates is exactly what I always love seeing in war movies. It's not about the action or violence, it's not about good vs evil, hell it's not even about the war itself. It's about the people who fight those wars. It's about the humanity of warfare. _THAT_ is what I love about war movies. It's their ability to take such a complicated and nuanced subject matter, boil it down to a handful of moments that you can't easily explain with words. But when you watch them, everything just clicks and you go, " _Oh_ , I get it now." Hacksaw Ridge, Saving Private Ryan, The Hurt Locker, just to name a few. It's all the human moments in those movies where if you blink, you'll miss it.
