Nope. There are NYC neighborhoods where the kids are sent to HS test-prep from 2nd grade. But they aren't educated in arts, history, language, science, etc, or encouraged to do any activities/experiences that aren't explicitly aimed towards getting a higher score on some test. That doesn't actually reflect a belief in the importance of education - it's more a cultural assumption (from the "old country") that high test score = elite admissions = elite jobs = high income job, so you can take care of your parents, and show-up your parents' friends. When you see a kid with top marks on the SAT, but who can't write a "What did you do for fun last summer?" essay without ChatGPT, that's not a well-educated person. Elite colleges are looking for well-rounded student populations, and so is society - real-life is nothing like a standardized test.

Like the Asian man said, "it's about preparation". That's why Blacks dominate basketball and football and Hispanics dominate Baseball. But you don't hear anyone saying, "let change sports to include more Asians." It's about preparation. Forcing representation is unfair; everything should be merit base. I wouldn't let a 5'5 Asian in the NBA if he can't shoot and defend just for representation.

Mugsy isn’t Asian. I think representation is great. People can see themselves in those people. A short person in basketball can go to a different country if that’s their passion. Remember, kids are taught racism, like you, so if they can be with others different than them, they will actually be better humans for it, unlike you.

@@Darrel8086I understand what you are saying. That given the quality opportunity and resources anyone can do well but I do not think that is quite right realistically. I think everyone can become better and smarter but stuy is a league of its own. Not everyone will perform and be brilliant just because they go to a good school with good teachers. It’s like saying you can be a doctor or also a nasa scientist with the right teacher but if the passion, drive and a little bit of natural talent isn’t there, you won’t be able to commit to it and perform well. You might do okay or a little better than you normally would but you won’t be at the high standard expected of you or reach that stage you truly need to be at. You can go from a B student to an A student but can you be A+?Clearly not everyone can be A+. I think that is the true problem of affirmative action and in that sense I agree with the OP that it does lower standards in the long run.

Yes, "academic preparation! YES! But, dancing and singing is much more fun than learning math or science... I remember being a college student in the 1970's; Asian kids were coming to the US, many 6-10 years young, not speaking a single word of English upon arrival, had little to no money, taking ESL classes in the poorest of urban schools, and graduating high school as valedictorian, going on to Harvard University. My college had about 60% White, 38% Black, and 2% Asian students; if you went into the library at any given time, at least 50% of the occupants were Asian... It's more about values and much less about racism...

It's more complicated than that. I teach in a similar high level magnet school (mathematics). Imagine your kids go to a rough middle school where teachers do not want to teach because its dangerous. There are middle schools teeming with gangs and no one wants to deal with that. Now that kid doesn't have a math teacher because no one will work there. How can she compete with a kid who comes from a school fully staffed without those problems? Her ability to study is not the problem, the schools ability to provide adequate instruction is. I teach in a school like these high end magnet schools listed and I have that girl in my class and she's struggling to get started but her drive is even greater than some of the kids who would have scored higher than her because she knows what THAT HS she came from would be like compared to here. She's just grateful to have a math teacher. How many kids do you know in school who are grateful to just have a math teacher? The reason she was admitted is each school district is allocated a set number of seats in our magnet school based on student ability. She was towards to top of her middle school despite her scores being significantly lower than students from more affluent districts. Yet she will probably earn an A in my class because how hard she is willing to work.

Colleges who've made contracts with library systems is a barrier to those not in a college to access knowledge, workers getting hired through nepotism (seen in high rates in some industries like media) exists, and biases in hiring practices are still rampant. Meritocracy in the US or many other nations is a fantasy u tell yourself, because it goes against reality. For instance, try to access medical journals without a paid subscription, or many studies or material evidence from antiquity (jstor, journal of nature, Lexus nexus etc). Try again to suggest meritocracy exists as any basis without lying and u may have a point.

The young female black student should recognize that the people in the new school she is going to be attending do in fact share her same background - they have a drive to learn and improve themselves. Those others students from her old school are not going to her new school because they're not like her.

Good point. What would actually be a much worse situation is if they changed the admissions process all of a sudden and otherwise undeserving students would be admitted. Then she would actually be ostracized even worse because fellow students would believe she was one of the sympathy admits, although she would have gotten in without the change in admissions process. What kind of change? Perhaps a lottery system that replaces the test score system as basis for admissions. The above scenario actually happened for 2 years in an elite public school in San Francisco before voters changed to return to a merit-based system. Lots of negative unintended consequences in that experiment. And thank goodness it was fixed.

No, Stuy in particular has always had a major race x classism problem. The kids self-segregate pretty hard there, and "keeping up with the Joneses" takes on a very peculiar form. The newer immigrants from countries like China, S. Korea, and India also tend to have a very hierarchical/competitive mindset, discouraging kids from associating with classmates who can't advantage them in some way down the line. It's pretty sad, and not to the benefit of any of the students. Bx Science & Bklyn Tech used to be better-mixed, but it's harder to do so with such low diversity in the student (and teacher) populations.

@@Jeanne90275 You're confused, or misinformed. Extra Fed money is allocated to schools that serve poor populations - hence the push to get kids registered for free/reduced lunch. That can overlap with minorities, but poor white & rural schools receive the same support. Doesn't have much to do with this topic though, State & local funds make up the majority of the budget, and those are allocated by headcount.

As long as race isn't indicated on a test, a test is a good way to get in. The Racial divide could be cultural. It may sound racist, but there is truth to the fact that Asians have a culture built around "Test well get the best job you can work hard at it" the other races do not. They are more prone to studying, working and doing what makes there families happy. After all these are the BEST schools for the BEST students. Not public schools. If you want a shot you have to study. Some times you have to accept that maybe you don't get in your 1st try. Take a lesser school for a few years then transfer.

No, tests especially those which test academic aptitude are usually economic based..and since economics are tied to race, unfortunately so are those tests. Those with the means to afford and access resources will usually outperform those without and it's not cause they're smarter or meritocratic. Nor is it wrong those with the means to afford those resources or gain that access. But as a result of their participation inequity will persist.

@lostwanderer6649, have you seen how newly arriving Asian families live? It’s not because we have the means. My family arrived with purchasing airline tickets on credit (there weren’t credit cards at the time almost 40 years ago, so they got the credit directly with the airline and eventually paid it off) and $500 in cash for a family of 7 to Queens. We all worked hard- the kids studying and helping our parents in their work. We lived in mice and cockroach infested apartments with ridiculous rents moving multiple times throughout my childhood when landlords raised the rent too high. My parents worked 12-18 hour days 6 days a week. We never went out to eat, go on vacations- only day off for all of us were Sundays for church and anything that was free living in NYC. My parents didn’t have the opportunity to even learn English because they were working such long hours, and yes they tried when we first immigrated but we never saw them because they were already at work when we woke up for school and after work go to English language school and get home at 10 or 11pm when we’re already asleep. This went on for 3 months and they just could t do it anymore. I being the oldest was 7, my siblings 5,3, and less than a year old. My grandmother lived with us and watched over us during that time. My parents did not pressure us so much but we saw the sacrifices they were making for our futures. They got us piano, violin lessons scrimping and saving so we can have enrichment. Paid for tutors to help us with our homework, it wasn’t because we had the means, it was because we knew we had to sacrifice for our futures. I’m 53 years old now a teacher with a master’s degree, we were a foster family taking 6 babies adopting one, we have a lawyer who works in advocacy, successful business man and a pastor in the family. All of us making a difference in our communities. Even my parents after they were forced into retirement in their late fifties due to health issues volunteered teaching refugees and immigrants how to sew so they can make a living- they worked in clothing factories and it didn’t require English. My parents had less than an elementary school education in Korea and always emphasized education as the only way for our family can advance. I know that most of the families at the Korean church we went to made similar sacrifices. Please don’t see my comment as saying other people of color are not making the sacrifices like this, I’m just sharing my story so you can look into a childhood like mine.

@@lostwanderer6649yes the environmental factors make it unfair and it is what we call systemic racism. But I do not think lowering standards or implementing affirmative action is the answer becuase it does penalize students and take away their opportunity for a better education and eventually better job prospects. It’s taking away from a group in this case Asians, to benefit another racial group. I do think what the OP said is correct. It’s the test score and that is it but at the same token there is an socio-economic component that detriments those with poorer backgrounds. Rather than target black and Hispanic students with affirmative action, I think a fairer solution is to help those in those poorer socio-economic backgrounds regardless of their race. Help them because they are poor not because they are white/black/Asian/Latino. How we go about this is the real question? Find programs and solutions that are economically and logistically feasible to aid the lower class. Don’t make it about race. Eventually by helping the lower income class, it will work itself out and as long as everyone regardless of race has a similar opportunity and resources, it’s all fair game. But my statement is idealistic. Throw in emotions, politics and economics and it brews up a storm where nothing is done and no one is happy with the resolution.

I feel like having an even representation in ALL schools are good. If there is even representation everywhere, funding would be equally distributed. It is up for schools to make sure they can challenge students, but also support those who need help. A great mentorship program could occur between students, and teachers. @@UseURHead, the senator is not working just for one group. The way this segment featured him around the table with the Asian students was giving you that visual. I have two adult daughters who were moved to a new school district, the new school put them in regents classes at first. They were surrounded by students who were not interested in their education at all and were a distraction. I advocated for them to be moved to honors level classes and the difference in the rigor was stark. They were surrounded by students who were motivated and wanting to achieve which brought my kids to want to reach. This is the learning environment we should creating in schools not mix them all up so they bring the expectations down. The educational system needs to be restructured from birth so that all children are given the opportunity to strive and attain based on their own merit. Please look into what Catherine Hershey School and Milton Hershey School in Pa are doing. If only we can get this level of educational opportunities for all children.

It has to do with a lot of discipline. Asian culture is very disciplined when it comes to academia. It’s admirable, although probably exhausting. The only reason why the other races are OUTNUMBERED by Asians is because studying/high GPA/ high testing scores are embedded into their upbringing. My Asian mom forced me to study and attend tutoring every day just to get into Specialized high schools. many Asian families value academics over recreational activities. back when I was applying many of my non-Asian friends didn't even know what specialized high schools were or why I was trying so hard to get into one. so if predominantly Asian people apply they will most likely get admission.

You had kids from all over the City, all different economic & cultural backgrounds - that was part of the program's strength! The problem with this is, there is systemic racism in our society. When all education from pre-school to 8th grade is equal everywhere, then a standard test is appropriate. We actually used to have free prep programs for high-performing students for the Standardized HS test, as well as the SAT & ACT. But the funding got cut, and we immediately saw a massive decline in students from low-income families. The moniker of "Asian" students masks the class- and color-disparities within the immigrant population. An 8th grader from Shanghai who just showed up with a fat wallet and the benefit of 8+ yrs of foreign or private education is going to be much more advantaged than one from the Phillipines who spent grades 4-8 in underfunded US public schools.

I teach in a high end magnet high school like the ones discussed here but in a different state. Similarly students have an aptitude test to determine who gets in. In our state we have so many slots allocated to teach school district. This means we get kids from the rougher feeder schools and kids from the higher end districts. My kids from a rough district did not have a math teacher for 7th or 8th grade. That being said they were practically in tears to meet me and realize they have a real life honest to god teacher. They are also my hardest working students because they don't want to go back to their home division. The right solution is to use the test but take the top students from each school allocated by slots. Slots should be proportional to school population. This way you take the top % of students proportionally equal from all feeder schools. It's a good system.

The disparity isn’t in the racial makeup of these schools even though that’s what it appears to be. These Asian students worked hard and deserve to be at these elite schools but there should be ROOM for every student that wants to participate. The disparity is in the fact that not all public schools offer the same level of educational opportunities. The real goal should be to have elite programs available at ALL public schools so that any student who wants to participate can. ALL students deserve to have the same quality of education. Not all students may want to participate but it should be available for any student that wants to participate. Schools should invest in tutoring for students who have the drive but just need a little help with mastering self learning skills. Elite programs shouldn’t be just for STEM programs, we need elite programs in the arts, literature, history, philosophy, entrepreneurship, etc. to make society more balanced. This will offer students who may not particularly want to be elite in math, other options to participate at an elite level. It seems that the focus is on math and English only which actually seems quite limiting. I’m not an education expert but shouldn’t Math and English skills be considered base level at elite schools? All students who are to be considered should meet standards which would obviously be high, but once these standards are met, shouldn’t other factors be considered as well? Problem solving skills, creativity, imagination and ingenuity, etc.?

A merit based system does NOT put into accountability of the discrepancy between schools systems among various neighborhoods in NYC (and in the US in general). Due obvious long historical reasons, you have Black Americans that predominantly live in low income areas, and as a result they have heavily underfunded schools systems. These students from the underfunded schools do not have the same educational access to teachers, textbooks, certain subjects, etc. Because of that (just like how your school did not offer algebra) the students from low income areas will not have the same educational level as student from higher income families 😑

im about to graduate college, i remember when i was younger many teachers used to call me bright as i always paid attention in class and got A's in most of not all my classes, math being my most impressive performance. Everyone in my eight grade class was encouraged to take the test that will get you into these prestigious NYC high schools. I took the bus to get to the testing site 30 minutes early, i waited and waited until the test prompter told us to start. I felt so defeated, to know how smart of a kid i was yet i barely knew any of the information I was being tested on. Months went by and out of the 100 kids in my high school only one was accepted into one of these high schools. It wasn't about whether you worked hard or not, it wasn't about if you paid attention in school and did well in your classes. It was about how much your parents could afford the classes that will teach you the information that you will be tested on, if they even knew that there was such a thing. These are children, most of them want to make their parents proud and to be proud of themselves, their race doesn't change that, just the accessibility.

Hey! As an Asian-American trying to go to these high schools, I legit don’t have any resources to study except for the opportunities given to me by the city. And, well, I’m in the same boat as them. I’m probably never gonna get into one because I need extra help, even though I know me and many other people could perform as well, even better than people that did get into those schools via the test if we had a chance. So… the system should definitely be reformed. There are many other prestigious schools that you can enter though that also don’t require the SHSAT, so keep an eye out!

It's not race that sets you back, it's the values and expectations held personally, at home and in a community that either push you forward or hold you back. Please listen carefully, I said dangerous not poor. Poor neighborhoods don't have to be dangerous. People who live there make the neighborhood dangerous. For the people who think this is not fair, have you asked yourself how much time an average kid in these neighborhoods spent on learning and studying? Do they spend more time in the library (which is a free resource) or hanging out on the street? I kept telling others, everyone was born as a blank piece of paper. Knowledge does not magically generate in your head, no matter how smart you are. People come up with new ideas, thoughts and theses but all based on knowledge they have learned and evolved. Knowledge is like building blocks, you need to spend time learning and understanding them, more importantly keeping them. Good teacher or not as good teacher, they only introduce you to the knowledge. A good teacher may be more patient and may have multiple ways to teach and help different students. However, the students are the ones who ultimately take the knowledge, understand and use it. No teacher can open someone's head and put knowledge inside. No matter how good the teacher is. A smart student is great but honestly not as good as a hard working student in my opinion. If a smart student refuses to learn, how much do you think he/she knows? Can you still consider a smart student smart without any knowledge? Instead of blaming the system, first ask yourself how much work you have put in compared to others. Don't forget there is a lot of knowledge waiting for you to learn in the library. They are FREE. You only have to put in time. Don't tell me you don't have time, you have to work. I feel you but you can still read during your commute. That's free time. You may not jump from a 0 (grades based on a 100) to a 100 instantly but if you don't do anything, a 0 is always going to be a 0. For those who may be curious where I came from, I was once ranked the last in the whole grade with 400+ students. I worked my way up. I built my knowledge castle one brick at a time. You all can do it.

I don't expect everyone to agree (that's too idealistic and quite impossible) but that's what I believe and it did impact my life. Honestly, it was not easy but definitely doable. I just hope my words can help lighten someone up and give them the push/motivation in their life toward success. Instead of wasting time blaming on others, ask yourself what else can be done with all available resource (trust me, there are plenty out there). I personally took many free courses online to enrich my knowledge. All you need is a computer / a phone and internet access. I heard there are non-profit organization providing mentor/guidance to low income public school students, guiding the kids all the way through college. Please look them up. They are free but you need to show commitment (time commitment). My understanding is they want to help kids that want to be helped, have them hang and learn from the right group of people walking through the right path. They claim to help many first generation college graduates in their families. ❤Honestly, I really admire their work to make the society better.

I teach in an elite school in annother state and we divy slots by school and the highest scores in each school get in. The kid who didn't have a math teacher had an a in my algebra 2 class. It's not a subject-test based on the curriculum, it's modeled on the SAT, and tests very specific skills. You absolutely have to practice, and you really can't go in cold, even if you're a strong student. We've known for decades that test-prep is important - that's why Kaplan, Princeton Review, Khan Academy, etc make so much money. The fact that some kids get years of prep, and school support, while others do not, is inherently discriminatory. Either we have to make free test-prep universally accessible, from 5th/6th grade, at least, or they need to go back to a holistic application - what the Specialized Schools did for decades before the test started in the 70s.

We did not prepare specifically for the SAT and ACT tests in the 1970s. We did take a Psat junior year to see if we were on track. Back then the testing was supposed to reflect what we had been learning for 12 years. I don't think increased test preparation is the answer. So many schools focus on test prep and the teachers are not allowed to just teach and we need to fix that.

We need private schools staffed with committed, effective staff for Black and LatinX children. The staff will need massive support. It will be challenging to overcome the obstacles created by popular culture and poverty, but it can be done. It will require a massive and unrelenting political and economic battle with very powerful interests. Low expectations are killing our children. Tests , and all of their trappings, are almost always biased, especially with preparatory disparities. But we will have to somehow convince parents and politicians that this is of paramount importance. Do not be drawn into an ill advised conflict with Asians. There is nothing to be gained by succumbing to the old “divide-and-conquer” strategy. Many won’t understand and will insist that they are looking out for their own, as if they were somehow a separate entity. Fighting over crumbs thrown on the floor. We can create institutions that will nurture and inspire our children to achieve. Let’s do that.

School education in USA is really poor. Elementary to middle not much at all by High school kids are not prepared for what’s to come. Because of which many drop out and go for vocational courses.
