16:59 There are other less negative expressions one could use instead of awful, like _"I don't like how this turned out, but next time."_ , _"There is still room for improvement."_ and such. Think about it this way: you will always see your own mistakes, that will never go away, but you reached a level of art when a high percentage of your viewers simply just LOVE what you do. This may be something not easy to get used to that people can still like what you don't. 🥰🤗☺ Wolfy, keep her sane! We trust you! 😎

How wonderful you can now have your husband/director of administrative duties with you to help, encourage, navigate, pack mule, etc.! I’m retired now and actually I could do it, but my surroundings here in N. Texas are so limiting! I call it “scenery handicapped “. If I lived where you are it would be so inspiring! Maybe if you live somewhere that isn’t quite “epic” you can focus on details or specific subjects are are inherently interesting. Trees, or the way light falls across buildings certain times of day. Or some kind of water..just a thought!

I paint outside at least once a month and have done for the last year and a half and it's been a huge learning curve. I painted or sketched indoors every day in march and even that was a task.

It is funny how you speak about forest therapy. I grew up by the beach, but now live a fair distance from a beach at the base of the Aus Blue Mountains. For me I seek beach therapy. I paint local, obviously (when I do plein air), but it is such a steep learning curve for me growth wise. To help cope with the struggle of trying to paint rivers and trees, I intermittently pull out reference photos I have of all the beaches I have travelled to and I paint a beachscape. It is so soothing and for me it is therapy. This is how beach centric my artist brain is. My husband recently made a 3d printed portable (sealable) gouache palette for me. It only has 7 half pans. Despite living inland, my colour selection was very much driven by what would make great beach colours. I can't help myself.

Hi, Wolfy and Sarah! Thank you for the teamwork which brought us peace of mind and such pleasure this April. Wolfy, thank you for being the willing 'Pack Mule', learning the admin, but willingly learning how to be Sarah's much needed, essential, supportive partner, in all senses of this word, when she's 'out there', as well as at home, learning the best ways to help her, learning so much yourself about the world you've always known. Sarah, a beautiful sketchbook as a result of all that angst! I thought I'd seen all your shorts, but think I missed the magnolia (oddly, my favourite of all these paintings). Thank you, too, for hitting me hard when you talked about it going wrong, and making oneself remember that the learning is the most important thing, wanting to give up "because I no longer know how to paint"... It's really hard right now, cos I'm a landscape painter who loves the open spaces, now "confined" to the urban arena, and yes, it's really hard!!! And yes, I'm going through all that negative stuff, too. BUT - a big but ... twice when I have been out lately, I've had a couple of unexpected 'Wolfy experiences' I've twice had strangers come up and talk with me, looking _properly_ and with interest at what I've been doing / have done, and then by their comments, revealing that they know a _lot_ about painting, too, and what they've said has made me look again at what I've been doing,. And I've been very surprised.... For the most part, not always good, but nowhere near as bad as I thought, and the occasional peice I'm really pleased with! So I am incredibly thankful for them, and for your comments in this video, just as I'm incredibly thankful that you now have Wolfy along to help, encourage and support. Just a couple of things for you both, the new team, adjusting to it: First: Sarah, when you ask Wolfy a question, do let him answer. 😄Wolfy, when you want to say something (as a few times in the video) make sure she knows it? 😊 Also, when editing, the continuity's good, picture-wise, looking at Sarah, but at times, the cut is really obvious, as Wolfy appears to have developed some oddly jumpy-jerky position changes.... And Sarah, (taking courage and a deep breath to edit this in) he's your husband, your partner, not your employee, or your helper. You obviously dont' realise what you're doing with this, but it sounds incredibly degrading to hear you use those terms to him, to us. Unless he's your partner, in your mind, in the business as well as husband, it'll make for a lot of unhappiness in the end. I think he was making a very valid point when he said about not being your little helper in the video. So much you are learning, and are willingly sharing with us. I don't take it for granted, and I really do appreciate you both! 😊

It’s amazing how much insight we can gain when an outsider sees our art for what it really is. I learn a lot by his observations! Regarding edits: Yep, a LOT of stuff had to be cut out 😂 he swears constantly, birds screaming, airplanes, bugs, cats, mailman, etc. Boy oh boy it took us an hour to film a small usable clip 🤣 learning as we go

@@SarahBurnsStudio My father swore a lot, and had no idea he was doing it. One Christmas, our cousin brought us her old tape recorder as a Christmas present. For some reason, we three (my brother, cousin and I) thought it would be a good idea to record him, so we did. He was furious (understandably!) . I don't remember if it cured him, though I do remember that we were saved more serious repercussions as the relations were with us for Christmas! The encouragers: It's the first time ever that I've had really knowledgeable strangers stopping to chat and both occasions were overwhelmingly encouraging. The elderly man had walked past me a few times in the course of the morning, as he lives locally. I waved to him as he was looking out of his apartment window a couple of times last year, when I was sketching in the gardens there. It was just as I was clearing up that he stopped, just looked at me, then came and sat down beside me. He was with me for ages, and the way he talked about what I'd done, and even gently stroked the paintings with his thumb deeply impressed me. I asked him if he still painted (he used to exhibit his work, and while still young, had won first place in a major exhibition at Versailles. He also did a lot of sketching in WW2) He replied rather sadly, "Not for a long time, but I've been thinking about it recently." He said it in a longing voice, so I really hope that he does! The other, the next time I was there, began with two little boys who came to see what I was doing. The two woman came and joined us as I was showing them my grab-and-go kit (a lot of stuff in a small bag fascinates young children!). Again, when asked, I showed them what was in my w/c book and one asked how I'd done the line work on the abstracts (masking fluid with a fine ruling pen), and when I explained how simple they are to do, she kept saying, "But so many different techniques!" So I said, "It's simple, really. It's just playing, and seeing what happens." But it was obvious from her comments as she looked at the other pages that she knew exactly what was involved. I am deeply thankful for those people, who 'just happened' to be passing at the right time, especially the two small boys, who showed me that I till have those skills, too! I needed / need it all so much, and I keep reminding myself of the genuine help they gave me. In fact, my foray into urban art has led to other interesting and enjoyable encounters with passers by, and I love these interactions! These two remain very special, though. 😊

@@MrsBarnabas I think you're absolutely right - it's so easy to get caught up on the technical side of things, or the fact that it didn't meet my vision, or a million other artist things. Then when an outside perspective offers their unique view, it is a little startling because it can be drastically different to the voices in my head. But I'm learning to let it be, knowing that the diversity of perception is a fascinating thing in itself and we can only accept that others will see how they see.

@@SarahBurnsStudio "others will see how they see." - especially when they love what we consider our 'fails' more than they like what we consider are our 'successes'! 😄 It happens so often that it taught me pretty quickly to 'just let them look' and answer any questions instead of pointing out why I'm not happy with a piece. "voices in my head..." Yeah, our own worst enemy, that's them. For me, it's one of the biggest benefits of plein air that passers by will stop, look and comment, seeing things from the non-artist point of view. After all, after fulfilling our own creative drive, making others happy to see what we do is also what it's about, and it's the non-artists, not the artists, who will look at and enjoy, and maybe potentially buy our work.

For me looking at an artist sketchbook is more amazing than looking at the finished painting because you see the journey and thought processes. It does expose the artist to vulnerabilities and areas that require further investigation, but there lies the beauty...FYI I tend to agree with Wolfie's comment about the title of "little helper"...makes him sound like an elf - Business Development Executive sounds waaay better! 😉 Thank you both for sharing your journey.

"Live long and prosper " to you both too 😂 It's great that you both get to travel around and work together now. I've been watching your back catalogue of KZbin videos for the past wee while, thinking I'll catch up to the recent ones soon, but it's taking longer than I expected. I keep being inspired by your work and running off to try something I've seen you do, but on a local scene of my own. So today when I spotted this new video I thought I'd jump ahead and see if I was missing anything. I'm glad I did 😃 It's interesting to me that you get annoyed when your paintings don't match your inner vision of what you want it to look like. That's a totally foreign concept to me. It may be just a facet of my Autism but I can only draw what I see. Nothing is previsualized. Everything is a surprise to me as it develops. So a painting not looking right to me as I go along, doesn't bother me so much because I'll just paint over it and carry on. It has caused me issues in the past though. Years ago I ran into a problem with my final high school art exam. I had a finished portfolio but no accompanying sketchbook of ideas and drawings to go along with it because all my ideas and mistakes are in the finished pieces. I spent the weekend before it was due to be handed in, making up sketches and things to make it look like I worked like everyone else, while my friends were working on the last of their portfolio pieces instead. I think I had the easier job in working backwards that weekend. I'm looking forward to your dried gouache video. I liked working in acrylic in the past but I wouldn't take them out into the field. I prefer to only carry a minimal kit so I stick to watercolor at the moment. Gouache interests me if I can take that out dry. I'd quite like that acrylic opaque look for a change from the transparent watercolors or mixed with them. Especially if I don't have to carry tubes or wet paint around.

For most of my life I thought everyone could visualise things in their mind, but I learned that a portion of humans cannot. It’s called aphantasia. I didn’t learn that until I started teaching art and had people asking me to explain it in a way that doesn’t require visualising it. I was absolutely surprised and fascinated by this!! I think it’s amazing that humans are so diverse, and yet despite challenges are still incredibly creative and find ways to express themselves

@@SarahBurnsStudio That's the one. I know not everyone with aphantasia is Autistic but I think it is a part of my autism for me as I've also got face blindness. I don't have any issues with looking at someone when I speak to them because my brain doesn't get overwhelmed by trying to process the visual and the language together like some people have. My brain just doesn't seem to register the faces at all. I do notice great tattoos, wild hair colors and interesting piercings though lol, but if you hide them or change things, then no. That's why if you meet me on the street I'm friendly to everyone, because sometimes those people I meet, have turned out to be family members I rarely see. People I see everyday I recognize okay. Overall, I think the difference is good though. When I go out taking photos with family or friends we come back with very different images. We notice different things and that keeps it interesting. I'm carolmacsart on instagram if you fancy a laugh, I mean look 😂

I will be waiting to see your "Dried Gouache" review... can't wait!!! It is something I've seen other artists do, as well as artists that only use Gouache in a more liquid form specially for painting outdoors (Jarred Cullum, James Gurney, etc.). So... using Dried Gouache in a similar way as I use watercolors is very interesting to understand, specially from a professional artist as yourself and an artist that is studying Gouache at a very high level... Additionally... I want to thank you for all your videos... Many times I feel really "down" (due to my health issues) and it is hard to keep movimg forward (if I didn't have my wife and daughters...). But art has been a blessing since last year and your videos help me a lot to keep pushing forward... So all I can say is... THANK YOU (straight from the heart!). Don't ever stop! Well done! 👍3:48 ocean shot was So surprised how clear the ocean of Scotland. Like live indigo oxidation. Sweet. If you are back at the shore, a close up of the sand? So curious! TYTY. Anyone find, sometimes, when they go back to look at ‘meh’ frustrating paintings like a year later, they actually are pretty impressive? Wolfie speaking is ear candy! I loved the shore trips the best being a former Pacific Is beach bum.

There are some parts of the coast that are crystal clear and the water almost looks tropical. It’s amazing! Some of the beaches have very fine sand. Others all rocky. Some are full of tiny shells and pebbles rather than sand.

I was hoping you’d do a sketchbook tour of all your April paintings!! I saw a few early reels on Instagram, but then my work-life exploded and I missed most of the month. Very cool to see the different things you chose to paint each day, they’re ALL lovely!! When you spoke about not having a vision for your waterfall, that struck a chord with me. Lately, I feel like I haven’t been having the vision I need for whatever I’m working on. I’m not sure if being stressed/busy is distracting me so much that I can’t be relaxed enough to enjoy the process… and the vision for my painting/scene is just not coming to me. It’s been very frustrating. My paintings do NOT turn out like your waterfall when I struggle 😂. I adore your waterfall scene ❤. So happy that Wolfy is helping develop your business and tackling a lot of time-consuming and distracting (or heavy) tasks for you 😊.

I think inspiration helps spark the vision. I was kind of overworking myself and that made it hard to get the spark. But overall I think the energy of spring helped me along! But I go through times when it’s hard to get inspired AND paint. Sometimes I just want to soak in the inspiration and not turn it into anything just yet.

Live long and prosper, Wolfie and Sarah!!! (Fun fact: I can do the Vulcan salute with my toes 🤣🤣😅). I was at the "I'm quitting, FOREVER!!!" stage about 3 weeks ago. Today I can't wait to get to the studio. I agree with you, Sarah, that the waterfall painting is not the best of the month and I can see the struggle you had with it (having watched you for years and knowing how things develop when you are in the flow). I think the most successful works are the two pen studies of logs (with the turquoise - is it marker?) which are really wonderful and the fallen log with the epiphytes and moss. I loved all of PleinAirpril and it blows my mind that not only did you paint every day, but you shot a ton of footage, came home and edited a daily short and now give us this wonderful long form video. And you still had to live day to day life. What can I say. You two are super heroes.

I still say that your videos are the most enjoyable artist videos out there. I’m glad you have a loved one who can go with you. I did Plein air the last time and a strange man kept stalking me. As she on as I felt him there, I stared him down and he’d drive away. But in awhile, he’d show back up. How did you keep yourself safe when you went by yourself? I was off a bike path at least, so there was regular traffic, but this guy was scary. I finally left and as I was loading my car, he parked again where I used to be! Thanks in advance for your tips!

Omg that’s terrifying. Wow. I guess part of it is awareness of our surroundings (sounds like you were) and if you dont feel safe, get away immediately. Don’t wait. I also carry legal protection and always have my phone ready for emergencies if need be but thankful I never had to use it.

Id love hiking with my husband but he is so impatient about me stopping to paint. He feels like he has to keep moving down the trail and I feel rushed. So often I take my paints and never stop long enough to use them. Congratulations on another plein air April in the books!

We wouldn’t have lasted long if he was impatient with me. He knew from the beginning that we can’t get more than 20 feet before I have to stop and take photos or paint! 🤣 Luckily he enjoys nature and will often just wander off on his own and explore (unless he’s helping me in some way).

Loved your retrospective on PleinAirpril and the sketchbook tour. Your taking on the challenge got me to push myself to do some plein air painting too - it went better than i expected! I am a relative newbie to painting (8 months-ish) and struggle with overthinking ALL the time, as well as my own worst critic si ce the results rarely live up to my inner visions 😊. This is just wonderful, I just love how You look at each other. The feeling of love between You is almost something that You can lat Your hands on, if You see what I’m trying to say. I really like the outside painting videos, because that is how I would most like to paint. But, I can NOT figure out how to wrangle the gear, I get frustrated and give up and go inside to paint another doodle or floral. That is fun, but…not the point.
