Had the privilege of stumbling upon a roadside mom and pop restaurant in the countryside near Hatyai. My Thai friend and I were the only ones in there. We ordered and waited with great anticipation when came along the husband. As casually as can be he sat with us and explained to us the magic of the food we were about to partake in. We listened in disbelief so after our lunch he invited us for a tour. We were blown away. This man had created a little paradise where every plant, bush, tree, insects, bats and bees he cared for played an interwoven role in self sustainably. We were treated to snack on fruits, herbs and even honey. God I miss Thailand. Thanks for bringing me back… until I come back. 🙏

I was stationed in Thailand in 1965-1966 and fell in love with the people and the country. I am now 78 years old and wish everyday that I had moved to Thailand when I retired in 2000, but my health prevented that, but I would give anything to have been able too retire in Thailand. I have been in 33 states in the U.S. and 28 countries and nothing compares to Thailand. My concern with you and your beautiful family is, the SNAKES. Do you have any problems with snakes? I saw so many deadly snakes while I was there (Korat, Ubon, Udorn, NKP) I worry about your families safety. Please reply.

Hi Ryan - I am away from home on business, and bingeing on your vids. Provides a great option to commercial TV! I've visited Thailand 5 times or so on business, but I never get to see the side of life you are showing so vividly. Limited time - tight schedule - work priorities. I'm also not ashamed to say I was scared shitless the first trip, a fear of the unknown and a different culture. Your videos are convincing me I need to take the Mrs. with me to check out more of this beautiful country. Thanks for your gentle, sensitive, no-bullshit thoughts.

You are right, having land is a blessing as you can grow your own stuff. We cannot grow rice, but the quest for the product with a higher margin is ongoing for any Thai farmer who has to live from this income. Unfortunately, it produces the price up, price down cycles too when the farmers see the price of a specific crop goes up, all plant it, but by the time they harvest there is surplus on the market and the price drops, often to a level it is no longer economically viable. One has to find its niches which need several years of lead up time. Thank you very much for this insight on your farm. I did see, you started to build a canopy over your water tanks to shade them. Good decision.

All of that food looks delicious. Can often pay 10 times more for the same dish in a tourist area and won't be anywhere near as nice as that stuff!

nice food in aunties restaurant - some of the best meals in thailand are in those local places i only eat thai food when i go on vacation there, no western food will pass my mouth which is sometimes difficult great to see the foreman out helping the slaves with the rice, the yield loos smaller than i imagined from the amount of area planted - i wont be looking at my rice in the same way again - gutted it wasnt drying on the roads - always amazing to see the roads covered at rice harvest time. i hope you are enjoying the extra time you are no getting with su familia

It makes my heart sad I am not in Thailand eating this dish this year. Damn Covid and all. This is one of my favorite Thai dishes. I like it best with a fried egg. Impossible to get fresh Thai basil in Wyoming most of the time and impossible in the winter. "". Sounds familiar in my house also. We have to drive 883 km round trip to Denver to get Asian food and many times they don't even have decent basil. One trip in three I can find a decent papaya for Som Tom.
