💯% agreed. I honestly think Mark had THREE better ridden waves than anyone else’s best ridden wave. Absolutely dominant performance. Luke had a couple of the very biggest waves of the day, and his win is well deserved. Not taking away from his W. But Healy was the MVP of the day (and could have easily taken the W… but the Eddie judging is more than just the skill and that’s ok)

I've been meaning to respond to this contest somehow, considering how perfect things went down, so I'll leave one here. I was watching live and had to leave right after you caught the seriously big one, Mark, forcing me to miss Luke and JJ's next heats, but what guys did seemed... just perfect. I thought for sure you were in the top with all the bombs and waves you were catching in both heats. I was on shore when Luke hit one of his 10.0 rides in the first heat so I knew he was going to be the one to beat in the end of contest. You couldn't see the surfers if they were on a wave from shore in the middle the surf was so big, but sure as shit you could tell the waves were bigger than I had seen or remembered from the 2016 Eddie. The 2016 was just as exciting and pretty memorable because Clyde was surfing his last contest. Those guys took extra care to be sure he wasn't going to get hurt in the water that year. It was great to see Michael Ho out in the mix to show everyone you can still do it at 65. Both contests lived up to the Hype of what it is all about. It's nothing other than the biggest surf party in world to honor Eddie Aikau. Where else do have a bunch of crazy friends get together to surf the biggest waves in the world with 40,000 people watching you have the time of your life. To get in is like winning the Golden Ticket to Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. Congratulations to being in one epic contest. Hoping you will have some steam in the tank to win the next one when it comes time.

Geez, surprised nobody died out there. I was the guinea pig watercameraman out at the '85 Billabong Pro. Paddled out with my super 8 in Greg Weavers old waterhousing in my back pack. I had never shot Waimea before. Got lucky. Only had to scrape over one close-out set. Never really got caught. This day it looked like non-stop close-outs. I never would have ventured out in this shit!

I don’t know the wishes of the Aikau family or why Quiksilver isn’t the sponsor anymore, but this event really needs a major sponsor. I also realize just surfing in The Eddie is a great honor in itself. However in 2004 the winner received a check for $55,000.00.
