Wait is the monorail shop on top of the locomotive shop? I have no idea why but I find that very entertaining. The train of the future and the train of the past both being serviced under the same roof. Fantastic.
@ToyManTelevision4 жыл бұрын
Yup! The original locomotive shop was a small tin building for the locomotives only The cars sat outside. In the 60’s when they were building the monorail the shop needed to be up high and the trains needed to be inside as they couldn’t really be uncoupled. So... why not put the steam shops under the monorail shops!! And then the whole trains could be pulled inside and never uncoupled.

I was a volunteer at the Pine Creek Railroad in Farmingdale, NJ. Their first acquisition was Raritan River Sand Co. #10, a Baldwin built 3 foot gauge 0-4-0 saddle tank. That same engine is now Disneyland #4, the Ernest S. Marsh.They'll tell you it came from a lumber operation in New England, but that's not true. They probably say that for "romance" purposes, but I know for a fact it's the same engine. She even "went missing" on the way to Disney - for protection, she was shipped to California in a boxcar, and this resulted in her being accidentally routed to Chicago instead.

Thanks for your video. Came across it today and it brought back memories! At 3:18 you have a close up of the #2 tender. As a 28 year veteran cast member of the Sign Shop, I was given the opportunity to create the lettering on the side as a throwback to the original Disneyland Santa Fe R.R. Also a fellow cast member and myself did all the lettering and gold leaf on the Lilly Belle refurbishment project. I created all the interior ceiling panels from one photo graph that existed. What a great time and labor of love! Retired now as of June 2020.

Slight correction. The "Lilly Belle" was not Walt's private car. It's original name isn't even "Lilly Belle." This was originally part of the Retlaw 1 consist, number 106, and was called "Grand Canyon." It was just an observation car with similar seating to the other 5 Retlaw 1 coaches. When the coaches and combine were sold off, Disneyland retained the Grand Canyon and rebuilt it into the Lilly Belle.

That is great footage that not a lot of people don't get to see, but you do have one little thing wrong. Walt never got to see the Lilly Belle as it is now. Walt died in 1966 while the car #106 didn't become the "Lilly Belle" until 1975 when it was opened up to V.I.P.s and members of Club 33. Prior to 1975 it was known as the Grand Canyon and was on the Retlaw 1 Passenger Train.

However next time we are in Disneyland going to try to figure out a way to get that Friday ride. I have seen where on Friday the car is left on the train throughout the rest of the day and certain people are allowed to ride it. But I think their members of the D 23 club or something like that

I can't seem to get the reply to work!! So I posting here. The tour was set up as part of the national narrow gauge convention. Disneyland will allow tours for groups, but you need to contact them several months in advance. They seem to like groups of about 15 - 20 people. They don't allow photography however this can be arranged for the area just outside of the round house. And perhaps inside if you are nice. But the rest of the area is right out. They worry about bad guys learning too much, and I for one totally get it. They are a target like it or not. And they do a great job of keeping millions safe in their parks without ever making problems for their guests.

Here's a bit of back history about the railroad at Disneyland. At the beginning it had a corporate sponsor. AT&SF RY (Santa Fe). For many years' from the beginning to around the late sixties or early seventies they funded the operation. The first four locomotives are named for past presidents of the railroad the last being Ernest S Marsh whom I had the privilege of working for until his retirement and a great supporter of Walt Disney. As you know most of the pavilions had corporate sponsors'.

4:44 "the railroad runs most efficiently and can pull the most number of passengers when they have 3 trains on the line". Disneyland was the first attempt to run an amusement park train on a block controlled track. With 2 stations and 2 trains. That failed right away, they needed 3 trains to even come close to keeping up with the load. So in 58 they added a new train and another depot. In those days as each ride was one ticket, they didn't want people to stay on the train, so what ever depot you got on at, you were required to get off at. So, every train had its own station. And that worked well. Until they added a 4th train. And every train stopped at each station, the system they have now. And the system slowed way down. With 4 trains, often a train needs to wait at a red block while a train is loading people. With 3 trains the trains never catch up to each other. All green lights all the time. SO on some days they will add the 4th, knowing the system will slow down and stack up, but knowing they can pack 33% more people on board. So when you are there, hope they are running 3. The trains will come every 15 minutes, and you will get out of the stations faster and never stop at a red block to wait for a train ahead to clear the station. The only advantage to running 4 is the trains come more often. AND if people get on and off quickly you will be on the line for the usual amount of time. BUT more often the train will go slow in some places, and even wait in some places like just outside of the Primeval World. And while you may feel you got a better ride as it took longer, as you pay one price, what you want the ride to be fun, not long. And sitting waiting for a green light is not fun. So on busy days they will at times run 4 trains, only to make people feel the line is moving faster, which it isn't. But the trains do come more often. At Main St as one train is ofter waiting for a green, as soon as the train clears the station, another will pull right in. But with the system slower, fewer people will have ridden at the end of the day.

*Thanks for some additional information* on the Disneyland RxR rolling stock; the private car resembles an 1870's Kimball refitted with Pullman furniture. The two 4-4-0's, original to Walt Disney Company's Retlaw Division, are very much scaled down from the once-ubiquitous Baldwin 8/27-D-2's of the mid-1870's - I reckon Burnham, Parry, Williams and Company, who ran the Philadelphia locomotive works at the time, would have likened the _Holliday_ and _Ripley_ to a possible 3'-0" gauge Class 8/18-D-1, except that the scaled-down cabs are a tight fit for not-so-small crewmen (Baldwin used scaled-down cabs only for 2'-0"-gauge four-coupled mine locomotives; the 3'-0" 4-4-0's Class 8/22-C-2 and 2-4-0's Class 6/18-C-1 used standard-gauge cabs). Three genuine Baldwins are also at Disneyland: Two 2-4-4's (don't know the official Class designation) with on-frame tenders, and one 2-4-0 Class 6/16-C-1 with separate tender. I reckon all five will undergo their 1244-day overhauls during phase one of Star Wars Land construction, which has the railway closed.

Great video!!! When was this video taken? I only ask because engine 1 was sent offsite to start her restoration about a month ago. The Lilly Belle has been mainly attached to the end of the Holiday 5 train for the last couple years. The Lilly Belle has been out every time I go to Disneyland, I go at least a couple time a month. I know they leave it in the roundhouse on days when it rains. The last time I rode in it was in December. You have to ask to ride in it right when the parks open because they take reseverations for the day and the spots fill up quickly.

when disney has more security for their trains than some railroads
@ToyManTelevision6 жыл бұрын
Than any railroad!! WOW. When I saw what it takes... Trucks are searched, mirrors under our bus. No photo rule..... OK I cheated. They said OK for the cutaway loco, but nothing more. WOW. Glad they looked the other way. I show one of the firework launchers, WAY off limits. BUt there it is........

Toy Man Television → You mention in this video that the DISNEYLAND steam trains burn biodiesel. At *some* amusement park I have been to in the past - maybe one of the BUSCH GARDENS parks - they were operating steam trains which {at that time at least} burned propane. Do you know if there is a significant difference between the two fuels? {Thanks in advance.}
@ToyManTelevision7 жыл бұрын
I think these did at one point. Not sure on that. BUT boy, what clean boilers!!!
@Allan_aka_RocKITEman7 жыл бұрын
Toy Man Television → Even though it's NOT "traditional", it seems to me that more {whomevers} would switch to biodiesel or propane to cut down on maintenance manhours....

The engines at golden spike ran on oil, but thy changed them to wood and coal to make them more correct. Must say, I do like the smell.

Toy Man, I want to build my own 7.5 inch gauge steam engine, I want to name it OL' Spazzy. Any advice for me? My model is supposed to look a little like C.K Holiday, but kinda different, along with a few different colors.
@ToyManTelevision8 жыл бұрын
+EricRamirez101 /EricRamirezGaming 101 Not sure. Never built a 7.5 live steam. BUT there are thousands who have. Find the locals in your area. They can and will help.

Didn't know they changed the name on the car. I have spoken to several people who have ridden on it. It was on the train all the time, but now they think its "not up to their standards" and don't want to spend money on it. So its parked. Sad. Retlaw was the name of disney's company that owned the railroads and the Mark Twain. Walter spelled backwards.
@giladmarkman10 жыл бұрын
they completely renovated it as well. it used to be a yellow car, not red. and the interior got a full makeover
