Join the Ddora Foundation Costume Fellow Rae Koch as he explains his process of recreating clothing from the Old Sturbridge Village textile collection. Starting with the original garments, Rae recorded measurements to create mock-ups and develop modern sizing for a vest and gown. He also used published patterns from The Workwoman’s Guide (1838), to create period-accurate caps. All of his work will help the Historical Clothing Office add details and create a wider variety of dress for our Costumed Interpreters.

Rae - What a wonderful video explaining how you reverse engineer patterns from existing samples in the OSV textile collection. It was helpful to see how you did the individual steps, made a white mock up, and then a finished product. Also, you are very good on video and should do more of these! Thanks to the Ddora Foundation for their support of the costume fellowship. Thank you for all you do at Old Sturbridge Village. Wait... there's a "Make a Dress in a Weekend?" Where do I sign up?

Do you have patterns available for work clothes for women? For working in the fields as well as working indoors? Dresses, aprons, warm undergarments and bonnets?

Not right now. We are planning to release a book this spring however that contains several patterns, including a cap, a cape, a vest, and stays.
