This channel is just so interesting. You learn about things you never think about. I didn't even consider that an escalator was such a giant operation, I just assumed it was pretty compact. Honestly one of the best channels on KZbin.
@JasperJanssen7 жыл бұрын
J I mean, most escalators are not that much bigger than what you see. Like the ones that span one floor in a department store. These are a lot longer, though.
@grassytramtracks Жыл бұрын
Escalators at department stores and shopping centres are fairly compact, but tube escalators are so much bigger and heavier duty because they run for 20+ hours a day (a department store is perhaps open for 12 hours a day), go faster and shift so many people

When I was last in london I enjoyed seeing through the dencing whilst riding the escalators to see the mechanics of the one being fixed ... I'd rather look and distract myself than complain about how annoying it is like everyone else seems to be doing

These guys are pretty clever, working in pretty poor, noisey and very cramped conditions, no wonder upgrades like this take as long as they do. Thanks for an insight into how it all happens
@scottwhitley33923 жыл бұрын
Yep that’s why the U.K. has fallen behind in many aspect when it comes to rail. It’s cheaper and easier building brand new lines than it is upgrading ones that are 150 years old.

Surely we need a video talking about those lift shafts that aren't in use? I'm not disabled but I have a father with mobility issues and 2 young kids. I'd have thought in this day and age it would crazy not to bring those lifts back. Unless there's very good reasons for each station - sounds like a series for Geoff to do.

I've always been a little unsettled by escalators... Ever since I was 3 or 4 in M&S in Sauchihall Street when I was drawn by the emergency stop red button. I pressed it. Alarms went off, escalators stopped and I wasn't very popular with the staff. If there is an ordinary staircase, ill nip up/down that. *Addendum: Wouldn't mind seeing the out of use lift shaft @ Holburn.*
@Rainer670596 жыл бұрын
At 6:10 we are at the lower end of an escalator. There's one question: why isn't the platform right here?! At 6:05 we see a corridor. WTF. The people have to walk another corridor. Then we have direction signs: different directions whether you want the eastbound or the westbound train. They go on different platforms. What the heck is that. Why don't both directions share one platform? London Underground is an uncomfortable tube system to use: all these long walks you need to take through tunnels, all these long subways. All these short sections of stairs in the subways it wasn't practical to put escalators into. At some subways you can get the feeling "Did a miss a way out sign pointing to a side tunnel?" You didn't, but it's terrifying. Of all underground railway systems I ever used, the London one was the most unpleasant. The reference railway system that I used first, that shaped my opinion on how it should or could be is that of Munich.

Shame he doesn't explain why it takes SO long to refurb. Yes, there's complexity, but a bit like motorway roadworks - one rarely sees anyone actually working on them, and the signs just say "engineering until 2019" or some other impossibly long time. No hurry, chaps
@GeoffRichards_GP7 жыл бұрын
Obviously we all appreciate having safe and working escalators. If he was able to share why it takes 2000 hours etc then fair enough. Just interested in understanding
@maxmullen63377 жыл бұрын
Geof Richards. Good question and one I ask all the time. It’s obvious that no cares about getting the job done. It’s essentially a nationalised railway and the management isn’t under any pressure to be efficient. The contractors may or may not be private companies, but either way, they don’t have to care if TfL (or whoever is in “charge”) don’t care.
@AntonyTCurtis7 жыл бұрын
I'd expect that they take away all the stuff to be refurbished to a workshop somewhere and only come back with the stuff after all the repairs are done to fit it all back together.
@wclifton968gameplaystutorials7 жыл бұрын
they should get rid of the escalators & replace them with stairs because it will be cheaper then replace 1 escalator with a lift moving downwards next to the stairs
