"A year today you will be able to ride a Crossrail train". Ah Geoff, if only. Loved this video and as a born and bred Londoner myself, I look forward to Crossrail eventually. And bad news AGAIN this week after my initial post that Crossrail is delayed once more until 2021 with another huge increase in costs.

I have no interest in trains, rails, underground. Don't even live in London, or the UK for that matter. I keep coming back to this channel and loving the videos. That chat with Howard Smith is a good example for why; two people talking about something they both love. You even said 'I love you' to express the joy in the conversation. You're making some cracking cinéma vérité if you'll pardon my French.

Geoff you being a Nerd for the underground would have know that all tube platforms have holes/ undercrofts in them. Now I did not know about them until my firm and it's electricians had to do a few Cable pulls at Warren Street tube station. Due to the track people wanting a big machine for track work we had to put a supply cable from Street level down to the end of the platform. This had to be done in sections due to the fire regs and Engineering shutdowns but all the cables that go long the tube wall go under the platform at stations. Since this is a confined space we had to open all 3 accesses before going down there. Also at the time the lights did not work down the Undercroft either. So a fun cable pull. :-)

Platform Edge Doors are called different names depending on how they are installed, PEDs are tall doors which don't reach the ceiling, PSDs (screen doors) go from the platform right up to the ceiling, and PEG/PSGs (platform edge gates) are half-height gates often installed of surface/elevated track where there isn't a proper ceiling.

4:30 +Geoff - I can answer that one about the hole in the platform! I saw a TV programme (Channel 5 I think) the other year about station construction. When they showed the construction of Canary Wharf they told the viewer that in order to deal with the heat from the train brakes an arrival (which would warm the station/tunnel environment - the last thing any underground rail network needs) they had fitted air extraction vents UNDER the platform to extract the warm and cool the brakes down while people alight. I think this also reduces the wear on the brakes. The output of the vents at Canary Wharf can be seen in the CGI render (the big three square grills on the end of the building that are angled towards the water) Not sure if this is the case at Farringdon with it being deeper and central London's lack of space?

It would be amazing to see this sort of continuous investment outside of London. We in the North have to commute to work too but are left with single line one per hour services where a 40 mile journey can take 3 hours at peak and none of the stations are near your destination. London is amazing but outside the living costs even for me on a decent salary.

Your opening is giving me flashbacks to a complaint I often made in my days in college/university. I went to a school in Manhattan, John Jay College, a constituent school of the City University of New York. It's located in a group of buildings around 10th Ave and West 59th streets on the border between Hell's Kitchen and the Upper West side. the nearest subway station is 59th Street-Columbus Circle. No matter which exit from the station I used, I had to pass at least two Starbucks. There were five of the damn things in a three block area. One on 8th ave, one on 9th ave, one of 60th street, one on 58th street and one on 57th street (59th street doesn't exist between 8th and 9th)

I believe that the London TFL network will turn into something similar to the German system, where we have the overground, underground and tram all link together pretty seamlessly. Sort of like the overground in London, however in Germany you always seam to get different types every time you change and that’s what I believe the TFL network will turn into.

"The only thing remaining is to put the wall cladding on." And build the escalators, build the incline lift, install the platform edge doors ... and those are just the things we saw here! In retrospect, over 4 years later in February 2022 (why did YT recommend this again?), perhaps alarm bells should have been ringing at the idea of being ready to open 365 days later (although perhaps they hadn't been installed either!)

No, Stockholm may have somewhat similar mainline suburban rail rapid transit (which MTR Nordic operates) but it's not called S-Bahn, and afaik isn't local-stopping with shorter station spacing so it's not an S-Bahn-type system.
@MartinBrenner7 жыл бұрын
Stockholm's suburban railway is called pendeltåg and it is similar to Crossrail as station distances are larger than in the metro which is called Tunnelbana. German suburban rail systems are often called S-Bahn, but the most well known ones in Berlin and Munich have short station distances in the city center and operate like typical metro systems. In other German cities S-Bahn ist mostly rebranded local trains, sometimes operating on separate tracks besides long distance tracks.

Nice one as always. New Map is actually a temporary one, so snap them up for your collection! Once through trains run to Heathrow, the Paddington kink should go. Once through trains run to Shenfield, then the Liverpool street kink should go and Whitechapel be added to the Shenfield line. One question next time you get to speak to Crossrail bigwigs. Why is there no connection at Stratford directly to the HS Kent and HS Eurotunnel platforms? You can stand on platform 10 at Stratford and see the HS platforms at Stratford International which runs beneath. This would give a 6min direct connection to St. Pancras international from Crossrail, and HSEurostar direct connection to both St. Pancras / Kings Cross and Heathrow. Or are you saving this for your new video "10 missing links" ?

Great video ... it would have been improved for me though if more mention had been made of the trains out into my neck of the woods ... I live a couple of hundred yards away from the eastern (Shenfield) branch of the Elizabeth ... (oops sorry "Crossrail") line. My understanding is that the existing "TFL line" Shenfield to Liverpool Street trains will start using the tunnels between Stratford and Whitechapel to connect with the Abbey Wood/Canary Wharf/Whitechapel/Liverpool Street/Farringdon/etc. line in February 2019 (some three months after next December's grand-opening) but there will still be some trains that will continue to use the existing Stratford to Liverpool Street route and they will continue to terminate at the existing above-ground platforms at Liverpool Street. According to the info given on this video at peak times there will be 12 Crossrail trains per hour (every 5 minutes?) on the underground Liverpool Street/Whitechapel/Stratford section but no mention was made of the frequency of the trains on the above-ground Liverpool Street/Stratford section. Does anyone know the latest plans for the timetable?

it's not really 365 days to go. Once it "opens" in December 2018 there is still no through service reading / heathrow - central london, the trains will terminate at Paddington. It's only in december 2019 that the service that everyone thinks crossrail is (through trains from west of london through the centre to east of london) will operate.
