Behind the Scenes: How Gran Turismo captured real racing using the VENICE 2

Go behind the scenes of Sony Pictures' new movie, Gran Turismo, to see how they capture real racing at high speed with real cars. The film, based on a true story, was one of the first productions to use the Sony VENICE 2 Rialto 2 Extension System. We spent two weeks with Director Neill Blomkamp, Director of Photography Jacques Jouffret ASC, and the rest of this incredible crew to see how they captured the action to bring the visceral feeling of racing to audiences.
Gran Turismo is in theaters August 11.
Behind the scenes was filmed on location using the FX9 and FX3 by Ted Newsome and Ricki Bedenbaugh. Special thanks to this amazing crew!

Showing how drivers doesn't push full throttle on a straight line and overtake others like easy bots in game can't be called so perfect. Drivers catching other cars by driving off racing line was so stupid. You can't call this film even a decent racing film.

me too bro I was clapping hard when Jann won in the final race (even though it did not happen in real life) and I was so happy when they included the raised hand championship pose reference from the GT games. Watching this film in IMAX was a truly an immersive experience from start to finish.

While watching the movie I didn't believe the big flips really happened like that. I thought it was just a wild flip for the film. They wouldn't go airborne like that. Then I found footage of both crashes.

​​@@rceps4999GT-R NISMO GT3s weigh less than 1.3 tons, this is already pretty light, especially when you compare it with its production road-going counterpart that weighs at a hefty 1.7+ tons. This is also not the first time a race car caught wind underneath itself. In the 1999 24 Hours of Le Mans, a Mercedes CLR piloted Peter Dumbreck caught air underneath (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_CLR). I haven't dug into what caused Jann's flip yet, but I reckon it's due to insufficient positive suspension rake, which may have contributed to the lack of front-end downforce.

I thougt the movie was really cool, but the details could've been better. When he's playing the game he turns the wheel while on the game he is on a straight, most of the cars that race werent even out yet in 2015 (the year of the story) and in the Le Mans race the last corner is from the Bugatti track and totally different from the chicane at the actuak Le Mans track. But apart from the details the movie itself was very enjoyable and awesome shots of the cars

This is an incredibly well done film. I LOVED IT. I saw it with my wife and kids (they LOVED it). I went again over Labor Day and saw it with my mom and uncle who also adored the movie. My mom shocked me when she said it made her want to get behind the wheel of a race car sooooo bad. I guess I get my interest/addiction to cars from my mom. 😁 If you have even a remote interest in racing and fast cars you will be pleasantly surprised by this movie. It is INCREDIBLY WELL DONE!!

Watched Gran Turismo a few days ago in the threater and WOW!!! The cinematography and visual effects had me HOOKED from the get go! You could really feel the tension and stress during the racing scenes, as well as that HUGE celebratory sob of relief at the end. I almost cried in like 4 scenes LMAO. VERY immersive, amazing movie. Definitely looking to buy it whenever I can.

As a simracer on iracing with 8k irating. I have to say it was very cringe to watch. The cinematography is cool and all but the racing was worthless 🤣. Gaining all that speed by missing the apexes. It's recorded for widescreen cinema with much higher resolution and quality, not for tiny TV screens. The Sony Venice 2 full frame cameras with big lenses can substitute the former 35 mm analog format which is huge.
