Behind the scenes of G.I.Joe's first live-action micro-movie! (JoeCon 2018 Panel)

G.I.Joe’s 1991 toy commercials changed gears and replaced animation with live-action actors and actresses and life size vehicles. These commercials were serial, a first for G.I.Joe, and told the linear story of G.I.Joe and Cobra battling for control of “Plasmatox.”
Filming was completed in December 1990, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada at North Shore Studios, Lot 3, with Cannel Films (now Lions Gate). Kirk Bozigian, former Vice President of Marketing for Hasbro, filmed nearly 3 hours of behind the scenes footage over the 3.5 weeks of filming. 28 years later, he mailed us those tapes.
Together, we premiered this nearly 30 year old footage for the first time anywhere at the final Hasbro sponsored G.I. Joe Collectors' Convention.
Now the "homefront heroes" can enjoy stories of what happened behind the scenes of G.I.Joe’s first live-action micro-movie!

I concur, this was great. I expected to fast-forward through most of this video but I was compelled to watch the whole thing twice. I was 16 when these commercials aired so I was past the point of playing with Joes but I remember these commercials and how different they were than anything else. These guys were totally enjoyable on this panel as well.

Hollywood and their studio politics is the reason why. Also egotistical directors with no vision…. In order to make a good G.I. Joe movie is to have someone who is a fan of the G.I. Joe cartoons and toys as the producer.

This footage is gold. It's amazing how much work they put into these sets and only used a second or 2 of footage. What became of those props I wonder! I still miss the old Sunbow animation, those commercials (regardless of the toyline) always got me pumped.

Since the Hasbro and NYC agency folks flew in and out, they took very little with them. Wren Roberts (Duke) was local to the location so he took a few things that he has since let go. All of the partial vehicles were destroyed I'm afraid.

I heard from a helmet maker that the majority of costumes we're tossed after the shoot was over. Alot of guys on the set were just doing their jobs and probably didnt feel the exact same way about gi joe as we did at 10 years old :)
