• HIDARI (Pilot Film) - ...

The behind-the-scenes of the stop-motion samurai film HIDARI.
🎬What is HIDARI?
This film will tell the action-packed story of Jingoro Hidari, a legendary sculptor who is said to have existed in the Edo period of Japan, although his very existence is yet to be confirmed. Many of his anecdotes claim that he was able to "breathe life" into wooden sculptures, which is exactly what we wanted to do in this stop-motion film.
With the aim of turning this project into a feature-length film, we've produced a 5-minute pilot film to explore the potential of this concept. We hope you enjoy this bold mix of dynamic Japanimation-like action and stop-motion techniques, unlike anything you have ever seen before.
🎬Find the full version of the pilot film here
• HIDARI (Pilot Film) - ...
Our intention is to use this pilot film as a starting point to create a full length feature film. We have started activities to raise the necessary partners and funding to achieve this goal.

This is beyond impressive, this new era of animation in the past 5 years seems to know no bounds. I am consistently impressed by the next great style and aesthetic, and yet somehow I know that this style is the most visually stunning and striking animation yet. Please do not stop.

I really love the mechanical contraptions in this production. His unfolding toolbox, the large mechanical arm, and the throne that unfolds into a combat golem all look amazing. Its the little details I like the most, the wooden pegs holding the arm attachment to the shoulder... the strings and gears of the arm being manipulated while fighting, and the whole throne rising up like some kind of elaborate puzzle box are all great. It really feels like they are taking full advantage of the whole wooden puppet theme, and I love it. I know stop motion is very labor intensive, and this seems like a real ambitious project. I wish you all great success, and hope the hard work pays off.

Man, comparing how technical all of this is compared to other kinds of stop-motion like Claymation is like comparing Akira to the average Disney renaissance animation. There's just so many moving parts it's mesmerising!

This level of detail is what elevates the film as a whole. Creating complicated yet functional puppets just adds so much immersion and worldbuilding, while still progressing a proper storyline. This film does in a few minutes what some movies fail to do in two hours. Phenomenal work, absolute piece of art.

This is incredible I'm speechless. I've made violins and guitars with hand tools full-time for nearly 20 years. The details and craftsmanship that went into everything here are just incredible. I appreciate and use a lot of Japanese tools especially when making furniture and other random projects for clients. One of my passions is hand tool collecting and at one time my hand plane collection alone was well over five hundred specimen. 😂 I actually have a tiny saw similar to the one he showed... I use to cut very small dovetails and other joints on it small detailed projects. I've made several of my own Japanese saws utilizing real Japanese saw blades and cutting them down to the size or shape needed. That's some HARD steel I tell you what. Without a background in material science and metallurgy... It would have been nearly impossible to cut down those blades and not totally ruined the tools. Just incredible all around and I hope this project brings you much success! I would love to work on something like that
