Phool Gendwa Na Maaro” is a famous thumri sung by the renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Rasoolan Bai, who belonged to the Benaras gharana. Known for her expertise in the Purab Ang style of thumri, Rasoolan Bai’s rendition of this piece showcases her exceptional vocal skills and emotional expression. The song, recorded in 1935, is one of her most celebrated works and reflects the pain and longing often depicted in thumri compositions.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s web series “Heeramandi,” features a modern ghazal version of the original thumri of Rasoolan Bai and a song from the 1964 film “Dooj Ka Chand” which was performed by Manna Dey with lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi and music by Roshan . In “Heeramandi,” the recreated version is sung by Barnali Chattopadhyay, with lyrics by A M Turaz and choreographed by Kruti Mahesh.
I have tried my best to do justice to this thumri in Mujra Dance form. Mujras are typically performed in a sitting position. Mujra combines elements of classical Indian dance forms such as Kathak with Persian influences, and is often accompanied by classical or semi-classical music, including ghazals and thumris.
