Holding the brush or roller over the top of the can seems to work just as well as the spout.

Yeah. However. Why not use the spout to open the can? Then use to for pouring since they come with it now.

I’m used to the old method. Pour and use brush to clean up the excess paint. Then pound the lids back on. Eventually they quite sealing. Then you get a skin on the top surface inside. Get rid of that. Then you can get clumps. Don’t want those in your brush, roller or wall.
