how many companies out there have this approcach to diy repairs/maintenance? I'm really impressed with what Behringer has become, they're doing an amazing job not only making accessible tech but also sharing knowledge with the community and listening to feedback. hat tip to everyone at the company.

This is not a repair. It is a calibration that I'm pretty sure could be done in the factory. The price is very low though, so I'm not complaining.

@@eliasknaapinen that's why I included "maintenace" (even a perfectly calibrated unit may eventually need recalibration). The problem with doing a very precise calibration from factory is that it would make the synth more expensive. They do make a quick callibration I'm sure, but some badly calibrated units will slip by QC every now and then. I also don't see it as a problem, since it helps keeping their synths cheap (and Behringer does a great job teaching the process anyway, which is what I really like; I'm all for shared knowledge on how to keep your instruments functioning properly).

@@nonono8788 They keep it cheaper this way, but it means you're getting a marsupial synth: it's born before it's really ready. Most makers spend the extra money to get it right before they ship it.

@@RadicalCaveman It's an analog synth. Parts drift over time - That's not something that anyone can prevent. This synth is very close to the original design by Moog, and the calibration procedure demonstrated here is the same calibration procedure that Moog put in their manual for the model D. They could have redesigned the Model D to use DCOs or digital oscillators that wouldn't drift - like they did with the A standard - but it would lack the sound that made the Model D desirable. It wouldn't be an analog synth.

Actually really easy, nice video! Also... bizarrely satisfying. Zero experience with this kind of thing, so people don't let this put you off. Some tips, the screw holes underneath actually move, so line them up with a small screwdriver when the faceplate is back down. Trim pots, they turn different ways to raise/lower, so don't expect turning left on both to lower ;)

Thanks for the video. All of my oscillators were playing a whole tone flat so, compared to the a-440 tone, my "A" notes were playing at "G". Using a tuner to get it spot on, I had to turn the OSC range calibration screws quite a lot to get them up to A. The Scale's weren't off by too much although Oscilator three seemed a bit more temperamental than Osc's 1&2. Once calibrated though, there was a huge difference, with the oscillators staying stable and in tune with each other across the octaves. Just a small note in case you get the same problem as I did - when reassembling and putting the mini bolts/screws back in, one of them refused to tighten. Upon inspection I noticed the nuts on the main body are in a sort of rail and, in this case, the nut was free to slide along the rail and out of alignment with the hole on the front panel . Once pushed back into alignment with the hole on the front panel the mini bolt tightened perfectly. The whole idea of getting into the electrics seemed slightly scary at first, but it proved relatively simple to do and well worth the effort.

Hello, Last time I turned on my Poly D, OSC 1 & 4 were completely out of tune. I've waited for 30minutes, switched the device off and on again but nothing changed. I managed to calibrate the Oscillators with the trimpots on the back panel. However, the oscillators are going completely out of tune when I change the range (from 8' to 4', to 2' or to 16' etc.). Do you have any solution ? Do you kwon what is the OSC RANGE trimpot made for ? Thanks,

Does the screwdriver for the back have to be insulated?
@gogogord
@gogogord 5 жыл бұрын
I would expect they've recommended this just to cover their own backs in case you short something - basically you should be okay, just don't bridge any connections while you're in there. The newer models had plastic trimpots anyway, so I really doubt you'd mess anything up!
@TooSlowTube
@TooSlowTube 5 жыл бұрын
@@gogogord It's more likely because your fingers transfer electrical noise, to a metal handled screwdriver, which affects the results, making it harder to tune. Even the proximity of your fingers to the trim pot or the PCB may have some effect. Ideally, you should do these things with proper trimmer tools, which tend to be at least six inches long, so you can keep your hands further away.

@@gogogord I guess it couldn't hurt, but that's more for preventing static shock (ESD). "Hand effect" is an inductive phenomenon - your hand gets inductively coupled into the circuit, and acts as an antenna, just by being close enough. In a lot of cases, it won't make a noticeable difference - it depends on the circut - but it's worth bearing in mind when you're trying to set something precisely.

I'm sure you found your answer long ago...but if you didn't...this was supposedly inherent to the circuitry they cloned from the moog schematics...aka it's how moog designed the circuitry...they cloned it...so it had to stay the same...supposedly not quite since I'm sure the moog was much more difficult to tune...I believe Moog calls it "character"...

Also, In the manual it discusses Pitch CV calibration and Octave calibration before discussing Oscillator calibration...So I am wondering if an owner should first do Pitch CV and Octave calibration before attempting Oscillator calibration?

I had to do mine out of the box new...It was delivered to me in the northeastern US in February...I'm sure the transit in unheated containers had much to do with it...Some feedback on the process...First, those single turn trim pots are very imprecise! Talks quit a bit of work, even with an electronic tuner. The most frustrating part of the process is fastening the face plate back into the chassis. The screws meet with square nuts that slide along rails! matching the nuts with the screw holes is a step that should not be hard to complete. Those nits aside, the process is straightforward if you follow the simple instructions.

Then I have to retune using the tuner but it's really way off. Anyway how can fix this? Thanks.

@BehringerKnowledgeBaseOfficial Who dropped the ball in the over all design of The Behringer Model D? The reason why I ask you this, is there are other analog synthesizers out there, that have an external tuning knob on the surface of the unit for that same purpose of fine tuning the OSC's... Respectfully, having an external knob to tune each OSC should not of been that cost prohibited to stop your design to including those external tuning controls.

I have aquestion concerning the Note Priority and the Poly Chain. Can the Polly Chain also be used with a different (Polyphonic) Unit and Top Note Priority? This would be handy in Live Performance Settings where a Single Note Lead would give you the Model D only and augment it with additional Voices from another unit (not doubling the Lead Voice) if you played a Chord. The seyup would be a MIDI Keyboard (MIDI out) going into the Model D's MIDI In and a Polyphonic Module connected to the Model D's MIDI Through (to module MIDI In). Have you tried anything like this? The MIDI settings are on P.31 of the Model D. Owner's Manual.

@PerryCodes
@PerryCodes 5 жыл бұрын
It's not really "opening" the synth. This is essentially a eurorack module that comes pre-mounted in its own rack. I would imagine quite a few folks re-mount this the moment they pull it out of its packaging!

How often does this need to be done, 10 hours? 20 hours? 50 hours? (of course I'm referring to the time the unit is being used, so 10 hours could be 2 months of usage).

Sebastian Feldhof haha I figured! To imagine if after a year you hadn’t tried that was so hilarious to me that I had to write what I did. Cheers to owning this incredible synth! I got mine about 6 months ago now. My first piece of hardware that wasn’t for guitar or stereo haha.

In this tutorial I see only the way to do it within the older version.. why there's no explaination on how to tune with later version's "multiturn trimpots"? how to tune my "D" with those small blue boxes??
@pthelo
@pthelo 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Pietro - I have the newer version and followed the instructions in this video with no issues. The circuit board is labeled as to which "blue boxes" are for which OSC, as well as the RANGE and SCALE controls. Its easy!

This is insane Behringer is suggesting this and letting non professionals open this up to tune. I can see these turning into a mess with very unpleased customers. Technically with Behringers outstanding warranty shouldn’t they allow me to send it back or take it to a registered Behringer tech locally to have them calibrate it correctly. Is this a option Behringer???

I would like to see more companies give us schematics and let the users repair or modify your own stuff. Like in the "old days" as nearly every electronic device came with service manuals. Stand up for your Right to Repair!

I am a musician, not an electrical engineer. This procedure requires opening the synth and tools that not everyone has. It should only be done by a professional

As a reader, I’m very unpleased by your comment. Try learning a new skill. You’ll find it’s quite simple really. If not, you could always pay a ‘professional’ a similar amount to the retail value of the synth to perform this simple task for you.

Do other analog synths require tuning like this?
@padmad3k63

Yes, the vintage ones need an oscilloscope and in some cases a volt meter.

Not all of them. Many have pots of the back for tuning. That would have been much more convenient.

I've calibrated my Model D three times but I cannot get Oscillator 2 to stay in tune, the other two track perfectly after calibration. Oscillator 2 will track well immediately after calibration but then will start to gradually go out, I don't have the patience/mental capacity to repeatedly tune it! Any idea on how to fix it?
