This absolutely nails the Roland squares and Sync sounds. Even has the notches on the edges of the squares. The timbre is very raw and pure as the original Roland oscillators and that filter is iconic and like the original cant modulate the bandpass much.

I used to have a Roland System 100, which sounded very similar. Tbh, the best thing about the System 100 was the filter, and the very phat PWM. This filter sounds pretty much the same, but it's even better with a bandpass mode.

I like faders big time, for the immediate reference of a level/envelope/filter etc. in the visual sense. Roland stood out in the early years for that reason and others a’many. I once considered the Jupiters the best ever, but I think I actually prefer what a Juno has to offer sonically. This one has what I like about the Juno in a monosynth version. I am remedial as far as playing keys is concerned but I want this for my friend that is classically trained, published, punk weirdo like me. This lil beast has serious range like older synths so that its not all sweet spots. Real synths don’t sound good every single setting. Tell me I’m wrong 🤷♀️
@lundsweden4 ай бұрын
@@markfish8403These older Rolands/clones have a very raw, 70s kind of tone IMO. Yeah, I'd agree it sounds like it's in the same family as the Junos, but there are some tonal differences too. Junos rock for bass compared to the earlier synths I think, and sound more refined/spikey. Bad thing with the earlier filters is your bass frequencies start disappearing quickly when you start filtering.

Bought one recently, I’m running it through a gstorm electro SH2 filter and the Feedback Juno 106 chorus to dirty it up a bit - otherwise it’s very ‘precise’ sounding, dirtied up a bit it really nails that early Roland System 100 sound, so much fun for arpeggios

Might have to replace my beloved Arturia Minibrute SE with this. As much as I love the Minibrute, it only has the one oscillator rather than two fully independent ones, and that makes quite a difference.

What do you think of this or the MS-1, are they similar enough so I can go for an MS-5 or are they so different in features and sound that it's still viable to own both? I see no sequencer on this one so that would be one part that I might miss out on.
@winesynths15 күн бұрын
It‘s not the same! Sound is totally different. If you are looking for a good performance synth you should also consider the MonoPoly which has one of the coolest arpeggiators I know. Check out the video on the channel.

@@winesynths Yeah the Monopoly do sound interesting and it also have poly 4 voices which is a plus. What is your opinion on the Behringer Odyssey because that is also one I have on the radar?
@MadelnMachines4 ай бұрын
Does it sound similar to your sh101 but more features? Have you replaced the model 15 yet
@chriswareham4 ай бұрын
In terms of the synthesis side of things the MS-5 should be able to do all that the SH-101 can do, but it also has the ability to pitch the fully independent oscillators differently. It also has a few more features the SH-101 lacks, such as ring modulation. The filter is also similar to one of the two revisions of the Jupiter 4, which was basically a polyphonic version of the Roland SH series and otherwise very different to the later Jupiter 6 or 8.
@sub-jec-tiv4 ай бұрын
Owned a 101 for 30 years, the filter sounds different. This is a different beast. But equally good. Frankly nowadays i’d choose this if i were choosing between a B101 and this.

Yes! And an Arpeggiator like on the Juno-60! ☝️ A clone of the ARP Sequencer would also be of great use here as the MS-5 has CV/Gate! We only tried it for fun with the Korg SQ-1!😁🤖

i might be turning into a jaded synth hobbyist. All these reworks of old synths are starting to sound the same with same old features. i wouldnt even want this for free. i bought a selection of synths that i believe cover most bases for my use and most other synths are sounding redundant to what i have. Of course i watch your videos to learn and support the channel. my poor thoughts about the gear have nothing to do with your nice videos.
@winesynths4 ай бұрын
I totally understand your point! I play Synths since 40 years now and often I think the same. That‘s why in my studio I have a well curated selection of synths that I find perfect for the music I make. And less is often more! The videos are purely driven by curiosity for the new analogue stuff Behringer and other manufacturers make, that I am also interested in. That‘s why you won‘t find any Roland Boutiques or other hardware nonsense on the channel! All the best! 😁🤖

@@dynatwenty fair enough. i didn't mean for my question to sound snarky. I owned an original SH-5 for a number of years and had a love/hate relationship with it. More due to the age of it and the fact that it was previously not well cared for. ...but yeah, it's definitely got a sonic character and I could see how it's not for everyone.
