PRO-1: Did Behringer save the best for last? Here are my impressions of the Sequential Circuits Pro-One clone:
00:00 Unboxing
00:12 Review
05:47 SEQ1 jam: Filter & Osc Waves
09:14 SEQ2 jam: Osc Sync & FM
14:10 ARP jam: Mod Wheel PWM x 3
Notes: SEQ1 jam was recorded in mono without FX. MAM MB33 was used as a third oscillator to check external input. SEQ2 jam comes with delay FX from TC Flashback x 4 synchronized to Pro-1 MIDI clock output. ARP jam with MIDI input from miditech keyboard (MIDI mod wheel) and Arturia Drumbrute (MIDI clock master). This jam is a kind of accident, as I first did not realize that Drumbrute was also sending MIDI notes to the Pro-1. So the Arp receives a weird mixture of notes from keyboard & drumbrute, but I kept this semi-random jam because it sounds quite nice ;) Besides the MIDI clock, Drumbrute also supplies a few sounds for Pro-1 external input. All jams recorded directly with Tascam DR-2d, 24bit, 48 KHz, without any pre/post EQ/Compression/Limiting.

Have to agree with others that the balance of spoken review and great sound / sequence demos is what makes your channel special. I currently have the Behringer Odyssey, and would love another synth to go with it. Struggling to decide between the semi-modular features of the K2 versus the sequencer and arpeggiator of the Pro-1... (Edited to say that if you do a T-shirt with your acid MIDI smiley logo then I would definitely buy it).

Though I can't say I'm big on knob twirling, having come from the Keith Emerson synth school of actually playing these sounds as leads and what not on a keyboard, at 13:38 I started to hear what sounded somewhat song-like and after that, with the integration of the drum patterns and whatnot, I started to get the vibe lol. If you add a cem filter to the neutron i think that would cover 85 percent of the pro 1 soundcolor , i find the pro clone a bit to stable sounding a bit harsher compared to the original , the digital lfo and env's also give it that to pure quality , it's less apparent in the pro 800 since that had more digital components to start with but i have a very early serial original 82 pro 600 + gigly and even there you hear the same sidelines to the 800

Prior to buying them all I used were hardware synths with presets.I just purchased the Neutron and Model D.... I had made up my mind to get the K2 next. I see videos where people are comparing these synth as though they were the same (types). I'm new at Semi-modulars but knew I always wanted a minimoog and a Korg MS 20...are the originals considered the same sounding/featured synths? Thanks for the video.

I buyed the PRO-1 mainly based on your review. I really like it. I have one question. Im looking to get the Model D. What would be the easiest way to send a sequence that sends bass notes, but also modulates the filter cutoff on the Model D ?
@PeteMidi
@PeteMidi 3 жыл бұрын
The only way to control the filter with a sequencer via midi is by cc 1, say mod wheel. This can be mapped to control the filter envelope depth. Or you invest in a midi to cv device...
@MrBeen992
@MrBeen992 3 жыл бұрын
@@PeteMidi Ok, ok, but you are saying that on the Model D I can modulate cutoff with the Mod Wheel through midi IN ? Thats great ! So I can send notes and automate Mod wheel. Something like you did with the UNO Synth vs Neutron video. Thanks !
@PeteMidi

Not directly the filter cutoff frequency, but the filter eg intensity, which sounds a bit different, but also nice for some filter dynamics

The organization of this circuit is very interesting. I like the details about the exchange of midi information that you bring in your videos. I'm studying the possibility of buying this Pro1 or the Wasp Behringer module - or even a Cat. I heard that Wasp oscillators are digitally controlled - I wonder if the 6 waves of Wasp LOF are in fact analog based. What about the Pro 1 sound generator (VCO 3340, 3320 Chips)? Would they be free from "digital control"? Both have the potential for 16 notes through the poly chain. However the Wasp filters seem more complete. I have a Minilogue and I really like its analog white noise generator to produce ambient sounds, creating an immersive atmosphere in a stereo set. Which of the two do you think would offer good cuts with filter rates to make good use of white noise and other effects for these purposes? There's still the Cat to come ... Thank you very much! PS: Summary of Wasp information: www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/BehrWASP--behringer-wasp-desktop-synthesizer

Hello Pete ! Nice review and great sound 👏👏👏 I'm thinking about exchanging my Model D for a Pro 1, I like the fat bass from the Model D but the patchs and filter have no much interesting results, the pro 1 have more movement, more results for stand alone use I think... What you think about the exchange ?
@PeteMidi

I've got my Pro-1 few days ago. Great sound...BUT: It doesn't play any midi note lower than C2 through both, USB Midi and standard Midi. When I switch the midi sequence in the DAW to the Behringer Model D or to another gear from Moog all is fine and notes from B1 down to C0 are to be played. I tried to chain the Pro-1 through the Model D by Midi. It has the same result, all notes lower than C1 are muted/ not to be heard. That limitation makes no sense as the bass sounds from the original Pro-1 where outstanding. So the B Pro-1 is not usabal to creat fat bass lines. That is a bummer.

@@PeteMidi thanks for responding promtly. great jam too. I have the D and just ordered the k2 today as soon as it became "in stock" and was making a stand for it based off the D so I'll wait till tuesday (hush hush) haha

Another harsh sounding, sounds like ass, box that has no soul. So far, the only real synth is the DM12 (if you dont mind cheap clacky keys). That synth broke new ground and sounded like a synth.

Probably a good machine, but it doesn’t sound like a Sequential Pro 1 at all. Like most Behringer clones except the MS 101.

It actually does. It is in fact completely indistinguishable from my Pro One. I would say it is 99% identical, the Behringer being a tiny bit better (less background noise and better calibrated pots).

Sadly you only play it with additional devices....would've been more useful without them to hear the real sound...
