If anyone reading this, has done a google search for the Roland EM 101, it's a polyphonic analog "Juno" in a box, which itself without filters works really well using this method (using midi instead of CV). Simply take the mono out, and patch it to filter in on the TD 3 (probably does stereo ? Not sure). The behringer TD 3 brings amazing life to the Roland EM 101 analog polysynth.

Very cool - thanks for sharing! Good to point out: you can literally run any synth/sound source in the filter (given the right voltage) and the filter will add some magic (given you like the 303 filter 😬).

I'm not sure I understand, which might be due to my inexperience with voltage control. But is the CV out of the TD-3 causing modulation to the waveforms on the Model D, with the Model D then sending the audio back through the TD-3 filter?
@NewElectronicFrontier
@NewElectronicFrontier 9 ай бұрын
Actually the CV out of the TD-3 (which is what the sequencer plays) determines the pitch of the oscillators on the Model D. So basically you get the same notes from TD-3 sequencer from TD-3 itself, plus the same notes played on the Model D. And those feed into to the filter, meaning you can create a fat 4 osc sound. And then you could for sure detune the oscs on the Model D to do more funky stuff.

@@NewElectronicFrontier I figured out an easy way to do it without any mods. I speculated that I could set the slider switch in the middle between square and saw wvae on the TD-3 and it would be silent. Sure enough it worked :) All I hear is the external VCO. I have it hooked up to Mutable Insruments Plaits right now trying out various synthesis models including wavefolding, granular, vowel & speech synthesis. Also experimented overdriving the VCO output first before plugging into TD-3... much better distortion in my opinion compared to the distortion switch. The various plaits models sound WILD through the TD-3 lol.. especially the Vowel & Speech model.

I' ve tried everything I can think of to get the TD3 filter-in to function. I think I may have a defective synth. The online manual is useless. But maybe I'm missing something. I've plugged 3 different synths in, a Korg Volca FM, a Korg Monotron and a Behringer VS Pro Mini. None of them do anything but briefly I think the Monotron was running through the TD3 while running a sequence. This leads me to believe there is a short inside the machine, but I don't really know. I have a Volca Beat. Its headphone output is the same signal on both channels. Volca Bass is probably the same. This means that anything that treats it as a balanced mono signal will get silence! Because it inverts one channel then adds them together. The proper solution is to get a stereo-to-two-mono cable, and just use one of the monos for your In. The dirty solution is to push the "In" plug part-way in, until you hear something. Then avoid nudging it!

@NewElectronicFrontier
@NewElectronicFrontier 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Wesley! I just checked it quickly. For that doesn't work. I guess its due to the original signal flow design of the TB303 that Behringer copied (akaik). The filter needs to get a gate signal to let the signal through to the VCA. tinyloops has a nice diagram: tinyloops.com/tb303/sound_signalflow.html That means that you would need the TD-3 to emit a gate signal without a note. Not sure if that can be done. Sorry.
@JH-lo9ut

You can put the oscillator selector switch in between sawtooth and pulse, wich almost completely cuts out the internal sound. Note that the td-3 doesn't have an option to disconnect the envelope generator completely, so you will need to open it via the internal sequencer or incoming midi signal, or no sound will come through.

The Mods of a 303 original $$$ynth into the debilfish would be in the thousands of dollars. Versus $200-250 with free shipping. IMHO it’s a no brainer. This “understanding” for me, completely, allows me to patch my MO, into hardware without losing the thread, until I want to ;) My first hurdle, after relishing in the utter chaos of the possibilities, was How do it Bark? @NewElectronicFrontier
@NewElectronicFrontier 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! Not having an MPC I see two ways that can work. 1) simply via MIDI clock. MPC MIDI out to TD-3 MIDI in. MPC must be set to send MIDI clock (I assume there is some setting for that...) and TD-3 to receive it (afaik this is standard set). Start the MPC - TD-3 should also start. 2) via clock signal. The TD-3 has an input jack for this (top row second from left "Sync In"). With this you can sync with analogue equipment. Not sure if any of the MPCs has a clock out though. Hope that points you in the right direction!

Make sure the td-3 is set to sync via midi (hold buttons "write/next" and "back" then push button "D", also marked "midi") To play notes via incoming midi you must set the midi channel to the same channel as the MPC, or whatever external devices you are using. This is done in normal mode. You press and hold the function button. One of the keys 1-8 will light up, this is the current midi channel for the td-3. Choose wich channel you want by pressing the corresponding button. While doing this, you can also push the pattern A/B buttons. Pattern B will show what midi channel the td-3 is sending on (this is for controlling other gear via outgoing midi)

So, I actually had 10 min to pull out my scope and check the stuff from the 2 videos. For the LFO to Filter in: there is some Filter Modulation going on and if you crank in the LFO speed quite high it makes some interesting sounds, but It's not like you would modulate the filter in a Voltage Controlled Filter on a modular rig. There is some effect, but subtle at the beginning and (at least for the first try) hard to control and totally wild at the end. I will play around a bit more and see if it's worth to make a video. For the Phones to Filter in: I tried it. You can get the effect, if really like all knobs are turned to the right already. Also only with the distortion dialed in heavy. You get quite some extra crunch, but it also takes away some of the "singing" that the 303 makes so loveable. I'm kind of undecided here. There is some self distortion. But I'm not sure yet if it's my taste. I guess I would more go for an external distortion effect. But yes - the old trick works. Only the question if old is gold, or just old in this case. :-) I'll also work on that a bit and see if I can get some sound examples that make sense for a video.

@@NewElectronicFrontier very cool! thanks for taking the time to do that! yes I've read on a forum I don't remember which one that that lfo modulation behavior is really weird and hard to control and unusual for sure but still kinda cool that it works at least a little at modulating the filter somewhat even if it isn't the usual behavior as that gives you an extra sonic option with the machine I also read someone using a trs cable instead of a ts cable and getting different results but haven't verified that yet myself, but a video of you showing what you did with your measurements would definetly be an awesome video or if you figure out how to control it to modulate like a regular lfo would be an awesome tutorial video as well! Also I tried the old headphones out to cv on my td 3 today myself and did notice the same thing, it didn't exactly add much distortion more like it adds a subtle distortinon and more high end, especially if you have the built in distortinon enabled I noticed some nice sounds even with some knobs at halfway but to really hear it the resonance had to be at least over the halfway mark but it can also be another useful sound in some situations adding an extra flavor to the machine, don't know if it's worth a whole video about it unless maybe you could somehow show some measurements of what it's actually doing that would be really interesting at least imo! @NewElectronicFrontier
@NewElectronicFrontier 4 жыл бұрын
Simple answer is: no need. The design of classic synth the gate comes pretty much at the end of the process, where the VCA takes action. So most sound design (osc, filter) takes place before that step. You can look it up here: images.app.goo.gl/As3GVmMda4Kb9oBX7 So basically you just "need" the OSC of the eternal synth and the gate will be provided by the TD-3. So if you would use the gate also, you would have kind of a double gating to the external synth voice. Makes not too much sense, but probably worth a shot for the sound design sphere. If you "just" want to enrich the TD-3, you don't need it.

You are welcome. And: you really made me want to try it out :-D So if I have the time in the next days, I will actually play around with the "Double-Gate". I have no idea how this will sound (and if) in real life... but that's about synthies, right? always trying out new stuff.

When you try out please drop a comment here, if it works the same way! Probably also for the other videos (LFO to filter in for FM sounds and headphone out to filter in for overdrive). I would love to know if it works with the micro brute 😊 had to sell mine. Too much redundant gear in too little space 🥺

Would've been my choice until they announced the yellow one. And I was sold (and had to wait). Damn marketing :-D
