In this video we are going to talk about how a piece of Bad Gear turned into my favorite synthesizer, the reasons why I’m using this ugly design failure all the time, why the Roland TB-3 is massively underrated and how both total beginners and seasoned pros can benefit from what only SEEMS to be a UI nightmare and dumbed-down preset abomination trying to capitalize on the heritage of the famous Roland TB-303 . This is a redemption story of the infamous green synth .
Is this member of the Roland Aira range the best synthesizer for acid and can it keep up with an authentic 303 clone like Behringer TD-3 ? Best. Synth. Ever.

Already wrote that general genre of synth groove box (with a drum machine) in Swift for native iPadOS, but sadly Apple banned it. Recently been pondering making a platform independent touchscreen synth with USB MIDI in (and possibly with analog filter cartridges) though, partially as an FU vengeance against tim cook at Apple so that plugins don't need Apple hassles anymore. After what Apple did to 32 bit plugins and to ELECTROBASE and DEFT MONK (apps and AU plugins I made), the community should say FU to Apple. Tried building some diode ladder PCB's from scratch and none of them functioned yet though, so. I should maybe skip the analog filter part.

Bro, the idea of refreshing the old reviews are golden. I have the same feelings about my tiny Donner B-1, at first i was like OK this is just basically the sequence player with some knobs... then i used it a synth, then as a midi-controller, then as a drum machine, the as a hardware sequencer, that as a sync shot hub, then as audio-in mixer... you know. Some thing can show you their better side only if you treat them well. Some doesn't (cough-cough Electribe Sampler). Thank you bro.

@@Braunld tbh almost every language evolution occurs due to laziness/streamlining! That’s part of why I find etymology so fun. I’m just old enough that it doesn’t come naturally to me to actually say, but it doesn’t bother me to encounter. Perhaps because I witnessed the evolution, from “wow, the a e s t h e t i c is so strong” to just “aesthetic!”, yk? In some ways it’s a shorthand rather than a strict adjective-isation. So in summary, I don’t view it as altogether that different from when parents chided people for saying “cool bike!” rather than full sentences like “that’s such a cool bike you have there”. But of course you might not approve of that either :)

An interesting method for the TB-3 is to set a one-step pattern, program a single note with slide, and let it run as a drone machine. Browse through the non-303 presets for some interesting results.

A good community created and maintained software can really raise the value of a hardware. The benefits include (but are not limited to): - You don't have to worry about subscription models - You don't have to worry about the manufacturer intentionally killing the support: the support will go on as long as there are any volunteers willing to pick up the maintenance - The software can provide functionality outside of the original scope intended by the manufacturer - The software does not lock you to a specific OS or specific version of an OS

I absolutely love mine and have used it for live shows and productions for years, such variety and options. Love the scatter for having fun with unique variations to patterns in real time. It’s great. The ONLY function that I wish was an option is: Midi pattern change via midi program change numbers. And this is why: You can already save specific voices per pattern to be recalled when the pattern is played,it will change to whatever voice you saved with it,SO if there was a way to change the patterns via midi program messages per an external midi sequencer simply selecting different midi program changes,it would ABSOLUTELY be the perfect evolved digital acid (and further) machine. And it would truly utilize the machine to its fullest potential. I feel like this is the one function that fell through the cracks that would have made this unit unstoppable in so many more ways.. Everyone loves choosing patterns live,(including me) but to be able to change patterns through midi would have been the ultimate cake icing.. I’ll still use it as is,but I can only imagine how much more amazing this unit would have been with that function. It would serve every kind of music production genre, and I bet it could even help create a few more at extremely high speed changes of patterns during high tempo productions as well. (Super acid Gabber, anyone?😏)

Love this! Both the ep and the TB-3. I love mine, and I can’t be the only person here who was motivated a little bit to buy it by the OG BG ep, and the fairly obvious subsequent backsliding…

Hey @AudioPilz thanks for the shoutout! Don't even think I knew the sine wasn't affected by the filter! (although I did read on the internet one time you can't filter a sine) It's kinda freaky encountering someone else who knows this machine as well as I do, you even knew its two bugs!! Just kidding, that's awesome and happy to be helping TB-3 users out there get everything out of this super little box. Great video, you created a TB-3 character arc! Maybe the first synth to star in its own movie?!?

Instantly this video is one of my favorites with my ownership of a TB-3 that I bought a couple of years ago without any prodding by anyone lol 😂 Even though I have not used it as much as I hoped, I still recognize its power and flexibility. I only knew of a couple of TB-3 editors and I will soon look and compare them to the ones I have installed. Your idea of having 2 TB-3s is very eye opening and I know that with the speed your video is being viewed that I better get in line for another one asap. Was there another model issued? I don’t remember seeing the step sequencer on mine even though I connected it within the past 2 weeks. Here are 2 ideas that came to me today while watching your video that you may wish to implement: Let your Patreon users know in advance the gear you will have upcoming episodes of before everyone else. 2. The same community could also share tracks with the same gear used while networking with each other. Thanks again for sharing this video and keep going strong! 💯🎯🎉👑

Nice revisit! Interesting that you can go so much deeper with software editors. Just outta curiosity, are the accents (and slides) also sent via MIDI when sequencing external gear?

The TB-3 is great! I love that you can randomize both patttern (notes) and accent/slide/octaves separately. So easy to get something going.

Have been using this since it was originally released (my first 303 clone instrument) . The touchscreen interface can be really frustrating (and I miss the touch of real buttons), but I agree the range of sounds and associated effects is impressive. Will have to seek out the editor software you're demonstrating! Looks great

Love the LED block aesthetic. Kinda want one to match my KP3+. Still figuring out the Kaoss pad in band jams but they like the looping spooky sound ambience. Do you know of any similarly styled step-sequency things to use for sending midi loops to other synths? I want more light up things but think I really need to get a Polyend or MPC or Launchpad to sequence my synths w/out computer

Thanks for the episode! After seeing it many times in the episodes I decided to try it, but the presets alone didn't impress me and I didn't have the time to try out the editors, so I ended up a bit confused why do you like it so much and how do you get the results you get from it. I guess I'll have to borrow it again and try it with the editor.

I like your usage of the term “bread-and-butter” to describe the delay feature o the TB-3, AP. It occurs to me that every 303 emulation I’ve been con’s IOU’s of includes a delay feature. I was at least made aware of that precedent when I grabbed up the Propellarhead emulation.

When the ability to control the sound engine on these became a thing it was so awesome opened up a lot of doors. I almost always had mine synced to a korg ea1 or the sh-32 would have them playing the same lines then play with it in the mixer bouncing back and forth and often running the output of the tb03 through the filter of the ea1 with it playing its own sequence then the ea1 looping through a shorter filter sequence letting the output of the tbo3 through as ocs1 was able to create some really interesting stuff that way. Also really liked using these together with the og kaos pad and or the ef303.

That distortion filter is very nice! My first big boy keyboard ‘synth’ was a Yamaha SY85. They are super cheap nowadays but I believe still have a great sound set. Be interesting how you’d use one in 2024! A Korg MicroX would also be a good one.

Yay! Thanks for giving the TB-3 the love it deserves. Such a powerhouse of a small box. Too bad they have locked away all the goodies so we can't even menu dive our way to them. You mentioned that the "press hard for effect" doesn't quite work on yours. I wonder, does it have the same issue mine has? Mine only has the pressure sensitivity working on the right half of the screen. Left doesn't react no matter how hard I press on it. Dunno if it was like that from factory since I bought mine from a mate that bought it new but he had no idea of that function at all. Guess the 2nd hand prices on TB-3's will "to the moon" now after this episode has been released. Maybe I should see if I can get a second one too before the prices go up too much. 😁
