So, here's the thing. Behringer makes really affordable (or cheap if you prefer that terminology) guitar effects pedals. Many are modeled after classic guitar effects pedals, and most are pretty true to the original classics they emulate. HOWEVER the UM300, which is modeled after the Boss Metal Zone pedal... one of the most hated upon pedals by snobs and neck beards alike, remains a mystery to me. Why is this pedal hated so much? I've had both great results and lack luster results with the Boss Metal Zone, and thought I'd dive into the UM300 and see if I could get a good result out of it this time around. The main difference is, I won't be plugging it into a traditional amplifier. I will be using it as a preamp, directly into my power amp, which is the way I believe this pedal was made to be used!
Let me know your thought below. Do you own one of these pedals? Do you enjoy it? Was it a waste of money?
Thanks for watching!

It sounded good. Especially for 30 bucks. I'm a beginner, and have a Boss Metal Zone. People hate it, but I don't know why. It's much more expensive new, but I feel like I can get most of the sound from it you got from this one. I watched your video because I'm wondering what other metal sounds I can get from pedals, without going broke experimenting lol. I also only have a practice amp. No loops or anything fancy lol.

If you like the sound just go for it. Don’t let negative comments stop you from getting one. It’s a plastic housing but compatible for any big or small gigs, unless your leg has 500 pounds and you have to stomp the paddle.

Behringer Pedals are amazing, I got the behringer amp modeling di thing, it's a sans amp clone basically but it sounds really good, and it's a di with cab sim so could go direct in with it. The brit setting on it has a great midrange punchy metal sound when boosted with a spark booster, I tried a tube screamer but I like the spark booster better because the tone pots are active so you can cut more bass

4:16 Bro I heard you put it down to around 8-9 o’clock, heard the muddy sound and said “fuck, I gotta pick this up.” Im finally building a pedalboard so im getting a reverb, delay, Chorus, Analog (the green one from Joyo), and I’ll definitely need a new Distortion for Metal. The OD/DS from Behringer is good and has served me well but since I’m getting pedal board, I’ve gotta have Distortion and OD separate (hence the analog OD and picking this up). Brother, you’re always serving us well with these videos, thank you again! Saving me the headache from picking an expensive Ultra Distortion up!🙏

Well, you made it sound pretty darn good, like a tight division of killer bees rather than the infamous can of bees sound associated with these type of pedals. Regarding the battery access - I had a Digitech hardwire metal distortion that seemed to have a similar thing (I say 'seemed to have" because I never had a Behringer pedal) - I used the cable.

This thing was my first pedal....... Now if you turn the volume up and the gain a little bit higher than 0, like 7 or 8 o'clock, the thing sounds a little better. Another thing that helps is the mid frequency, if you find the "magic" spot you have a cheap Swedish chainsaw or a dime tone or an interesting "beef it up" tone. Thank you for the great videos. Cheers from Italy 😉

@TaylorDanley
@TaylorDanley 3 жыл бұрын
I prefer it going into the effects return. If you already have other pedals plugged into your effects loop, it won't do the same thing. essentially plugging into the effects return is bypassing your preamp section. If you use the loop {send to return} you are sending your amps preamp signal into the power amp section, so it defeats the purpose.

You, know. I've watched a few reviews for this pedal and you get a lot of "13 yo me would've loved this pedal but I think it's a little silly". As for me, although beginner level, I've done a bit of research, tested quite a few of the popular brands in the guitar shop and, dare I say, is my favorite one thus far AND this video doesn't do it 100% justice. Because, love it or hate it, I feel it's the most unique sounding distortion pedal on the market. But who knows, I could very well change my mind in a year or two.
@TaylorDanley
@TaylorDanley 4 жыл бұрын
I dont know if you are aware, but this pedal is actually a clone of another pedal, the boss metal zone. The metal zone has received some of the most hate out of any piece of gear in recent memory. I think, in fairness, I showed that the pedal doesnt deserve all the hate it gets. If it works for you, awesome. But for people who dont like it, that's OK too. After all, tone is subjective.

I was wondering... How about instead of feeding this pedal with the guitar's output using an amp's effects loop output?

The method to open it is the same as the Digitech pedals. I don't like it, but you also should always have a little screwdriver or something on you anyway if you're playing guitar. If you've got a floating trem you've got the allen keys with you anyway, but I've always got a screwdriver with my gear for other adjustments and hardware anyway. I've used cotton tips, paintbrush ends, combs, forks, folded paper straws, whatever, and it gets it the lid open. I would prefer the finger screw of boss or a latch underneath myself. If you think the clip latches are too fragile, they could do something similar to the ProCo Rat pedal and put a screw to secure the plate instead. In any case I think it's a valid reason to criticise it but also shouldn't be a big issue to solve if you're responsible. The Digitech ones use a metal peg and it feels a little less awkward to open since I'm less worried about breaking it like with the plastic Behringers. I think you could modify it so that you could put a latch on each side instead but it's a lot of effort for a cheap pedal.

you should do a head to head video with the boss metal zone as they have the same comtrols.

I don't own a Behringer pedal, but after watching JHS expound on Behringer I learned Behr is as good or equal to Boss circuits. In fact many 'boutique' pedal builders buy their parts from Behringer - as do larger companies. I tried a Behr comp pdl, & I prefer the soft switching to the Neutrik switching.

Dude, Behringer are okay but they are just direct clones. Boss are the real deal, they invented a tonne of classic circuits, and continue to improve, Behringer only make copies that have noise problems and bad potentiometers. Boss pedals are indestructible, the plastic series of Behringer pedals has a lot of reliability issues. Behringer pedals are fine, if you just want to experiment with a Flanger without spending hundreds they're great, but Boss are better and always will be.

Doesnt sound bad at all, not for the price anyways. Good point about using pedals in the effects loop instead of the front end. You can find videos of people making the boss metal zone sound good! The key is to run it through the FX loop and not the input. Totally changes the tone.

I would try a boost, specifically something that cuts the low end, that should help. It's hard to suggest specific gear for people, but just try some different boosts (tubescreamer for example) and you should find something.
