Great vid. Had this interface for several years (got it when it sold for $125). You helped confirm (expand) my knowledge of it. One thing that might help others is that if you are using phantom power (and say 250ohm headphones that require power as well), be sure to plug in the 9v. Otherwise, you will get audio glitches and the quality of the overall sound will suffer!

As always, great video, thank you very much for it. I am very surprised with the sound quality, I've tried behringer interfaces about 10 years ago and they were very low quality, felt like one of those recording toys for children. It's really great to see that they improve their quality while still remaining affordable for people on a budget. And one last thing - That guitar sound on the Gibson! Damn! Waiting for part 2!
@YHRS5 жыл бұрын
I was also very negative towards Behringer for a long time. It wasn't until a few years ago that I tried one of their U-Phoria interfaces and it changed my mind. I think that they're offering some really good bang for buck for entry-level gear nowadays! I've been recording part 2 this week and I ended up editing out a part where I went over the signal chain for the Gibson in that mix. Maybe I'll find a way to put it back in :)
@YHRS5 жыл бұрын
I didn't end up finding a good way to adding the guitar details in, so here's a quick rundown of the signal chain: - Gibson LP Classic - Boss OC-2 - JHS Muffuletta on the Civil War circuit - Marshall JCM800 - Two Notes Torpedo Reload - Preamp on the UMC404HD - Two Notes Wall Of Sound speaker/mic emulation

Oh, I forgot to ask . . . you mentioned the Phantom Power in the context of a condenser mic. What is Phantom Power and why is it necessary for that type of mic? thx.
@YHRS4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Yeah, condenser (also known as capacitor) microphones require power in order to operate. In the "old days" microphones used to come with their own power supply, and some still do. But it's much more common nowadays for condenser microphones to use the power supplied from the preamp itself, known as phantom power. It's a 48 volt power supply sent through one of the 3 pins of an XLR cable that allows the condenser mic to reproduce sound.
@TySnouffer4 жыл бұрын

Hey, how u doin? The four playback outputs works as outputs of your DAW, so you can set some sequence chanels in each output. Most of the time is used for live performances, you can for example, set the master track in 2 chanels (L1&R2) the third chanel for the click track and the fourth for the vocal guide track just for monitoring. There are interfaces that have even 18 inputs and 20 playback otputs as the Behringer Usb Umc1820 , so you can set each chanel of your DAW in the outputs of the interface and plug each one in your mixer and you can change the volume of each one independently for live backround playback. My english is no good at all, I'm from Mexico. I hope this helps. Thanks for the video, Im subscribing!

Very good, but then what is this 5V power supply for? Sorry I use google translate.

21:00 you have bass, headphones, power, and two other outputs (?) on the back. What are the red n black cables for?
@YHRS Жыл бұрын
Those are plugged into the main outputs on the UMC, and are connected to an external recorder so I can capture the sound for the video. That's where you'd normally connect your studio monitors/speakers.
@RhythmicSensations3 жыл бұрын
It's also worth mentioning that the mono button on the 404 is part of the monitoring area and has no affect while recording through usb. It's good with headphones and the outputs, but if you plug into only channel 1, pressing the mono button will not add your audio to any other channel for recording.

Hey, thank you for such a great video! Quick question: you mic'd up your kit with two condensers and two dynamic mics. Did you have Phantom power on? And does that damage the dynamic mics (given that the interface sends Phantom power to all 4 inputs)?
@YHRS5 жыл бұрын
HI there! No worries about enabling phantom power across all 4 inputs when a mixture of condenser/dynamic/ribbon mics are plugged in. Modern dynamic and ribbon mics are built in such a way that they effectively "ignore" phantom power, so there's no danger of harming the mics. The only exception is if you've got an older vintage ribbon mic that isn't wired the same as modern ones. Those can be destroyed by phantom power, but you're almost certain to be safe if you're using modern microphones.
@michastarzynski66214 жыл бұрын
@@YHRS Great Review! I have question - can I use phantom power and line in simultanously? Like connecting my piano to 1 and 2 inputs, and then condenser mic on 3rd input? Or there is some danger to do it?
@YHRS4 жыл бұрын
@@michastarzynski6621 phantom power is only sent over the XLR connections, so it won't be a factor with TRS or TS connections on the combo inputs. So you'll be safe connecting a mix/match of dynamic, ribbon, condenser mics and line or instrument inputs.

Could you use the 4 outs + 2 x main outs at the same time, so you'd essentially have 6 outputs going out at the same level to a mixer or something like that?
@YHRS5 жыл бұрын
In part 2 of this review, I found that the main outputs 1/2 and the playback outputs 1/2 are duplicates of each other. Anything that you send to outputs 1 and 2 comes out both the main outputs and PB outs 1/2. Playback outputs 3/4 are independent. So it really is a 4-out interface even though it has 6 output jacks on the back.

When you play a professionally-mixed song, like from Spotify or something, is the volume still really quiet? Most likely the low volume is because you've taken great care to avoid clipping while recording each individual track, and the overall mix volume is low as a result. This is a good thing. You can put a limiter or maximizer across the master bus of your mix to bring the volume up closer to professional mixes.

GRET tutorial, thanks a lot! My bigest issue is not get 4 mono inputs, the last driver gave me only 2 stereo par (in 1-2 or 3-4), trying rec on Audacity, but I"ll go to Reaper instead.

Great video, thanks! I am new to music production and have just purchased this audio interface, I am still struggling to understand what would be the best way to record, say, a guitar and a bass simultaneously with headphone live monitoring for both musicians? Thanks!
@YHRS3 жыл бұрын
For the recording part, that's easy enough since this interface has multiple instrument inputs. For the monitoring/playback part through headphones, I'd recommend getting one of Behringer's HA400 headphone amps. It'll take a single TRS cable from the headphone output on the interface to the headphone amp, then you can plug up to 4 pairs of headphones into the headphone amp, each with their own volume control.

Could this be used to record 4 different microphones in a podcast format? if so would it be the most efficient way to record clean audio? Sorry very new to audio lol
@YHRS5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! It's specifically designed to record 4 microphones, instruments, or line inputs at the same time. You'll just need 4 microphones to plug into it, XLR cables to connect them, and you'll be set!

Thanks for this great vid! Wondering if you can help a student of mine-- with Reaper, we're trying to figure out (on Mac, not Windows... I'm used to Windows)... how to hear his audio coming from Reaper in a Zoom meeting. I know this is possible using an aggregate device with Mac, but how? haha. Shouldn't the UMC404 HD (which he has of course) have monitor inputs / outputs available in addition to the regular hardware inputs (1 thru 4)? Thanks so much for any help!

Getting ASIO audio into apps that use "desktop" sound has been a challenge, in Windows at least. I'm not familiar with the world of Mac enough to give a great answer. But I'd say that the easiest way is to use an interface with loopback capability. That allows you to send to the hardware outputs and have it come right back into the corresponding inputs on the interface. Then you use those inputs in your desktop app, and voila! I think that the app Soundflower can achieve the same effect on a Mac, that might be worth investigating.

In my Opinion "Behringer" is a Awesome Developer and Fair Seller, for a Big Money Pocket and the small Money Pocket too, most for the small! And when you get a Gear thats a bit Noisy...for 20 Bucks...ähm...its ok for 20Bucks! Otherwise you get "NOTHING" for 20 Bucks! Think about that! Since Behringer have a Deal with the Music Network, and Midas, they are High End, in some certain things, Hardware...i got the X32, the first Roll Out of them! And its a Awesome Mixer... and the new "Wing" ...crazy ...Awesome! Nice Video Dude, you do it all...nice! Good Review!!!

I have the Behringer UMC204HD and recently tried to connect my Boss DR-5 to it. The DR-5 outputs a stereo signal, so I used an insert/splitter cable (1/4" TRS to 2 x 1/4" TS) to connect to the Behringer, figuring that because the mic/instrument inputs on the Behringer are XLR/TRS the stereo signal would be routed to the left and right channels. Unfortunately that doesn't happen. The only way I can get all the tracks produced by the DR-5 to come through both left and right channels of the Behringer is to use a 1/4" TS to 1/4" TS cable plugged into the mono output of the DR-5 and to have the Behringer's Stereo/Mono button set to Mono. Do you have any thoughts on why the Behringer has TRS inputs when apparently you can't send a stereo signal through them? Thank you for your very detailed reviews and suggestions.
@robertporter24474 жыл бұрын
TRS here means 1 out to 1 in on one Channel to insert effect. If you need stereo you would use two channels.
@monsieursel804 жыл бұрын
@@robertporter2447 I guess I was having a brain-dead day and finally figured out that the 1/4" TRS input was not a stereo input but rather a balanced mono input. So I connected the DR-5 to Inputs 1 and 2. Ta-dah! Thank you for clarifying this.

Hey, sweet video! I was wondering, if I buy one of these, could I later buy another and aggregate them or something to have more inputs and mic pres? I’m on a pretty tight budget, the focus rite stuff is too much for me. I definitely need at least four inputs to start though, I do a lot of drum recording.

Hi, Does anybody knows if I can plug a keyboard together with a condenser mic (48V ON)? since I dont want that 48V to reach my keyboard and damage the outputs. My keyboard would use Plug conector whereas the mic would use XLX. thanks
@YHRS3 жыл бұрын
The 48V phantom power only travels over the XLR connection. So anything plugged into the 1/4" TRS jacks won't see any voltage when phantom power is engaged.

Is this audio interface class compliant ? Will it work on my ipad pro ?
@YHRS4 жыл бұрын
As far as I understand it, the UMC404HD is class compliant. But in order to work on a device without a USB port, you'll need one of the camera adapter kits to provide bus power and adapt from USB to Lightning.

Hey man! Great channel and review videos! I had the umc404hd and liked it a lot. Great interface for the price...but returned it because I felt that the recording level was way too low and with more gain it was clipping badly. I used Auria in iPad pro, Audacity and Reaper and compared with the wave recordes with my sonic port in the iPad the 404hd looked like a flat line :/ In your experiece have you noticed if Behringer umc404hd has lower output or recording levels compered to lets say the scarlett or steinberg or rubix you have reviewed? Thanks!
@YHRS5 жыл бұрын
I thought that the input levels were consistent with the other interfaces that I've used in this price range. The output level is a little low, but that doesn't really affect overall volume of mixes. But if you noticed very low input gain, maybe double check and make sure the channel pad is not engaged.
@aleph76775 жыл бұрын
@@YHRS Thanks for your reply! Yes, I checked the PAD button wasn't engaged before recording. I actually made some testing with and without it having similar results. Other thing I noticed was that it clipped even setting the channels with low gain (using passive pickups) but the recorded wave form was still lacking amplitude. I guess I might have get a defective unit.

Great review. I have a question about audio routing. So when I plug a guitar into it, can I then send the signal from the interface to the amp or is that a wrong way of routing?
