Welcome to my FX Series of videos on the Behringer X32 console. This series is taking a look at the effect rack built into the X32. Today we look at the 'Fair Compressor' which is modeled after the famous FairChild 670 stereo tube compressor.
This is Part 1 of 2 in my series about the Fair Compressor. This video will explain the controls that we have at our disposal and Part 2 will show use of the effect with audio.
If you haven't already, make sure to check out my new website dbbaudio.com for the latest news and updates! Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks so much!

Hey Drew, loving the vids. I have a query re: bias and balance knobs. I think the bias is a HPF as it seems the more I turn to the left the more it reacts to low frequency's and the balance is a mix knob. try it, would love to hear your thoughts. Cheers! Tony...

I'm lost. Would/could you use this on vocals to improve voice quality? I see how you could use it to let the vocals get through without being over powered. In fact, I'm thinking a lot of amateur bands need to do that. I could use it when dubbing my voice over music, which frequentlyw ill make my voice osund muddy by losing the highs. I've compensated by lowering the sound of the music track, but I'm going to seee if I can't compress the middle like you do in your video of the music track where my vocals are dubbed over instead. Or graphic equalize them down. Learn something new every day...

Great stuff Drew! Can you share with us how/where you find the details about the original equipment the X32 effects are based off of? Having the blueprints if you will would help me to know when to try different effects and what the controls are intend to do. Thanks for all you do!

Hello drew! Maybe the balance knob is to set how much of the mid trigueros the side compresor and viceversa. Could you check this?

I'm curious, what kick mic did you use for the kick and were you using? I was curious about the 'click' in the kick as I always seem to end up with a bit of tearing sound when using a Beta 52a on the kick.

+Brett Gilbert Hey Brett! I love the combination of the Shure Beta 52A on the outside and the Shure Beta 91A on the inside. Gives a great selection between the low end boom and the click I want out of the kick drum. One of my favorite mic combos!

Im confused. You're compressing just the drums but the insert is on the main LR. So what happens if the whole band is turned on?

I work, part time, a heavy metal bar in Oklahoma doing sound. Or music is vastly louder and different. Your tutorials have been a wonderful tool for me to "dial in" our board (x32). You're clear and concise and very informative. Thank you Drew.

Would this still work if it was just a single overhead ? I attempted to use this technique this week because we are getting way too much snare through out overhead, but couldn’t really get the desired effect, even using extreme settings. I was curious if it is because it’s a single mono overhead and not two run stereo.

@drew when I send my drums to a mix bus and add a compressor like this one, it sounds like the entire drum set has phase issues, not a little bit but a ton, why is that?

You can’t use parallel fx buses on X32, so make sure that the original dry signal is muted.

Nice videos. but the narration is not very intelligible. Moving your mic closer and/or dampen you room acoustics will help :)

Drew Please go back to a headset mic. WAY too much room sound with that nice large diaphragm condensor.

Hey Drew! Thanks for these tutorials. I’m running into an issue with this effect and thought I would run it by you. I’m inserting it on a stereo channel that’s linked on the console (keys). I’d like to use it to carve out the center of the keys and leave the sides, but the effect doesn’t seem to be processing anything but the “middle” channel. The “sides” channel seems to have no audio running through it. Any idea why that would be? Thanks!

Thanks foor the videos! They're really useful because we have the sammme mixing desk at church. If you get time, I'd really appreciate a video deep diving into the dynamics section of the channeel strip.

Drew, I just purchased a X32. My board does't seem to have the meter screen that you show in this video.

Thanks for the video and great Job. I want to compress the over heads to cut some time on the cymbals. Do you have a suggestion as far as values in the knobs. I really appreciate your comments. Thanks
