Ian’s beautifully self-aware summary of his attitude at 1:22:21 should’ve gotten way more credit: “I’m like an ‘aggressive optimist,’ I guess… From my past experiences and what has happened to me in my life, I’ve had no choice as a defense-mechanism to survive, but to be aggressively optimist about things, as a way for me to survive and traverse the world that I was born into. So , that is my unraveling of ‘why am I so angrily optimistic about things?’ “ Well-said 👍 it also happens match perfectly with Mullen & Shane’s summaries too.

The free will conversation sounds like Jordan and Kyle find comfort in the idea that they arent responsible for their thoughts and decisions. We are all a sum of our experiences, but i think its possible for people to recognize the unconscious processes and use your free will to shape those subconscious impulses.

Thank you!!!!! One hand feeds the other and both can be true in a certain sense!
@Grizzly_Biscuit Жыл бұрын
It's really way more simple than what the conversation turned into: your subconscious is way way way quicker than your conscious mind. You also are not aware of most of the things your subconscious deduces as the next course of action. It absolutely feels like you're making your own decisions in the moment, but no matter what, your subconscious already did choose, way before your conscious mind arrived at the decision. @@BeinIanPod

That delay study Kyle keeps referencing is widely criticized by peers. Ian made so many good points. There's many studies that show quantum effects in the brain, and it's by no means exhaustive, we still may find others. And that's just quantum fields we think we understand from the known to be incomplete standard model. A "soul" quantum field could exist in another dimension, making those decisions by interacting with the structures in the brain transdimentionally.

This is one of the rare times that I'm going to take Ian's side. Any person who has invented something or created a piece of original art is a pretty simple example of free will. Chaotic nature versus lawful nature is on full display here. Kyle and Jordan read some fancy book on philosophy and succumbed to one man's hypothesis on an oversimplification of the human mind. Ian saw this hypothesis and raised a middle finger to it and pushed back. Is this not free will? It would be much easier for him to please the people around him and agree, but he chose to believe something else in that moment.

Thank you!!!!!!
@drunkwizard Жыл бұрын
The whole idea of the subconscious is that you are not aware of it. Thus, you wouldn't know what it would OR would not "tell" your mind/body to do. It could very well lead you in the direction of sobriety just like it lead you in the direction of addiction. If you view consciousness as an iceberg, the subconscious is that 90% that's hidden beneath the surface of the ocean. You just don't know what's down there influencing the other 10%.
@MitchelWallis-w3o Жыл бұрын
@@drunkwizard Not to make a religious argument but most conceptions of the universe are to do with a Christ conscience having thought before material existed, so the fact we can use our thinking to shape the world is our Godliness.
@drunkwizard Жыл бұрын
@@MitchelWallis-w3o no one is arguing that thoughts aren't powerful. What's being debated is the idea that we are in control of our thoughts and make our own decisions (free will) as opposed to being guided by our subconscious (not free will). The experiment that Kyle brought up is an example of how our brain creates the illusion of free will because thoughts pop into our head and we make a decision. In reality, the brain has already decided before we are conscious of it, thus giving credence to the idea that we are not actually making our own decisions, we just think we are.

Ian just didn't understand the concept of the free will dilemma. I feel like if you really understood the concept yourself, you'd recognize that as well. All they're doing is accepting that their perceived conscious choices are pre-determined by their subconscious before they "choose" it. They're not miserable, they're just not afraid to consider the literal science behind it and change their understanding.

@@daditude69 Well tbh it gives more leeway for self-empathy for an addict and people who look at addicts. The issue is that the 12 step program is based on the Yankee values of "personal-responsibility," so you're right he and others like him have been indoctrinated by that ideology and also in general people feel more comfortable knowing their choices are their own.
