Marketing design is not a job I ever heard of until I stumbled across a job listing one day when a friend was referring me for a design job at a tech company. It turns out, it's the perfect job for me! In this video I explain what it means to be a marketing designer and the skills and traits it takes to do a good job. I hope you enjoy it! This sounds so similar to what I've been studying and doing in PR and Communication internships, only you come in at the 'design' angle and I come in at the 'written/storytelling' angle! One of the 5 second things you pick up in philosophy/psychology is the impact humans have on colours. So it's interesting to know that they use/learn the same techniques as we do, but physically and not contemplatively.

This is exactly what I was doing at my previous job, but it was called a "marketing geologist" because it was for a geological software company & my background was geology! But I went in only having a flair in design, no formal training, and it was a steep learning curve! But the work itself was exactly as you described and I really enjoyed it... pity these types of jobs don't seem to come up very often!

Thank you for showing that marketing designers do cool things. The freelancers and agency designers alway seem to get to carry the "cool" card. But there's generally better job security in marketing design, and a lot of great opportunities. I got to go to Europe for one of my marketing design in-house gigs, for example.

YES! I get so protective over marketing design. it's such a fun job and we do really great and important stuff. but even within in-house design it's more product(app) designers who get the glory!!

Hey Charli, first of all, thanks for such a great video. It's great that I get to know more about marketing designers. I'm currently a product designer at an agency and asked to interview marketing designer candidates in the coming weeks. Could you give me an advice on what I should look for when hire marketing designer?

I think look for a range of skills (marketing designer will need to do branded graphics, maybe illustrations, alongside UI/UX work so don’t want someone who only focusses on UX) and hear about how they work on a team. You want someone who won’t only do what you ask them, but will come up with their own ideas and be the brand watchdog!

Another great video! I've seen and heard about this type of field alot as I've been applying for in-house jobs to move from freelance. And thanks for sharing your thoughts about the value of web design in marketing, as I was taught mostly print in school and learned web on my own, but as marketing design integrates more and more with social media and web it seems like most companies look for UI /UX/ and html/css more and more to where it seems more lucrative than other fields because of design due to the big call for it I'm thinking it will eventually take over the field of design 20 years from now with print almost obsolete, but we'll see. And design and conceptual skills while more important don't seem to be made as much a priority to the applications you know. Maybe it's because most of the jobs I've worked for and been exposed to have been more generic print shops and design agencies, restaurants, etc.. But I'm pouring most of my focus into learning as many different applications and areas of design as I can, though it seems as design integrates more with technology it might be more prevalent to study web coding and the ins and outs of phone apps and animation.

+B Black a company that values design and knows good design will always be super interested in the conceptual side!! When it comes to design applications and even coding I think it's more important to know what to do with it and what to create than it is to just know HOW to use them if that makes sense. This is what makes a good designer, so make sure you think a lot about problem solving and think conceptually too :)

Would you recommend a person in your field have a digital camera to take pictures for marketing purposes (such as for banners)? And is that a requirement? I see those type of marketing banners a lot on banking websites where it may have employees doing something in the picture with text on it

Good question! Most of the time stock imagery can suffice, or the company you work for should own the camera rather than you being expected to use your personal belongings. I find I very rarely use my camera for work purposes.

+Adrian Leonard Canning you don't technically need any! Instead of trying to get started in document design I'd advise just getting started learning design in general and the things you learn about typography, negative space etc will help you when you start to specialise in document design.

I've never seen my job referred to as 'design marketer', it's 'marketing designer' (I think there is a difference in the terms because the first seems like it is the act of marketing design, and the latter is about designing marketing materials, which is what i do. I feel like in this video i gave good insight into the skills that are involved in the job so perhaps watch it back and listen out for that, but I am planning on making another video about this in the future. in some places the job might be called 'graphic designer' or 'visual designer' or even just 'designer' so it's important to ask questions and understand what team you'd be working on and what you'd be designing.

Generally speaking I'd say a company that you have to convince that they need a designer is not gonna be the best place to work! It's not something I've ever tried to do myself, I've always joined a company who is in need of a marketing designer, which means I was able to fill those needs and help them reach their goals. There are plenty of companies out there looking for great designers, so I'd recommend going for those ones rather than trying to convince one who doesn't see the value in design!

i think the answer to this depends on what you personally are looking for in a job! if you'd like to work with multiple different clients then an agency might be best, but if that doesn't matter to you then you could go for inhouse :) just make sure you choose a place that already has at least a few other designers on the team as that will be the best learning environment.

How often does a marketing designer and a product designer cross paths? How do you work together? I'm a UX/UI Designer on the product team but I don't work with our marketing team. They are in a whole other state! Your process sounds very similar to mine. Asking questions is my biggest focus when assigned a new feature. :)

In companies I've worked in the product and marketing don't work on projects together, but do give feedback on each others work and discuss decisions about brand together to make sure we're aligned and using the same colours/design style etc in the marketing and the product

would you say a marketing designer and graphic designer are basically similar jobs ?. also do you often create graphics/logos/imagery from scratch - say for app buttons or do you just use stock images from google ? Graphic design tends to be about designing for print, whereas marketing design involves a mix of both. But some companies may define a marketing design role as a graphic designer for sure. Marketing design is a term most often used in tech companies! And you can create images from scratch or use existing imagery (so long as you have the rights to use them in your work!)

if you're already a graphic designer i don't think you need to go to school to learn digital design :) look up some online classes and videos about web design! and i have one on my channel about how i moved from being a print designer to a web designer that might be useful.

I just thought of a question, but not sure if you need an entire video on it or now. It has to do with coding. How much have you had to learn. I dread it. I've avoided it. My brain just doesn't work that way. Do you code? If so, how much? Do you think it' necessary as a creative to learn this stuff? If so, what are the basics? I ask because you are in the online space quite a bit and I assume that you're going to need to know some stuff. I've had to pass on a few jobs because I didn't want to learn CSS, and Java.
