These Italians are Italians... and more!
We are in the town of San Marzano di San Giuseppe, home to an ethnic group many people have never heard of: the Arbëreshë. It’s an ethnic group that lives all over Southern Italy: mostly in Calabria and Sicilia, but also Puglia, Campania, Molise, Basilicata, and Abruzzo.
In today’s video we visited San Marzano di San Giuseppe, one of largest Arbëreshë communities in Italy. We had a chance to interview some of its residents and hear their personal experiences growing up as Arbëreshë.
We hope you'll enjoy watching this video because we really had a great time traveling to San Marzano and filming this important piece of history for the Arbëreshë community in Italy.
Among the various topics we explored in this video there are: the history of the Arbëreshë people coming from Albania to Southern Italy, the Arbëreshë traditions from different towns, the Arbëreshë presence all over Southern Italy, the Arbëresh language, growing up speaking Arbëresh and learning Italian in school, the history of the Brigante Pizzichicchio, and many more personal stories from our protagonists.
Special thanks to:
- Leonardo, our first guest in the video, who showed us around town, and allowed us to have a special tour of the “Arbëria in miniature”. His passion for this community is truly admirable and we were so happy that we met him. Grazie Leo, ci vediamo presto!
- Lorenzo, one of the most welcoming people you can find in Southern Italy. He made us feel at home from the moment we met, and made sure we found as many contacts as possible for our video. Grande Lorè!
- Antonio, Cosimo, and Tony, for sharing so much of their lives with us - on and off camera! These guys were an incredible resource in terms of personal stories, the history of the Arbëreshë people of Italy, and much more. Tony's art is truly incredible and we recommend you all to visit San Marzano di San Giuseppe even just to see his work - don't miss the Presepe (Nativity Scene) that him and Cosimo set up every year! Also, Cosimo and Tony are the artists behind the "Arbëria in Miniature" so make sure you check it out in person if one day you decide to visit San Marzano di San Giuseppe.
Enjoy!

We use Mirëdita in Albania too, but it would be the equivalent of the Italian "Buon Pomeriggio", however you can still use it as a general greeting before evening.

In Australia our prime minister is half Italian and his name is Tony Albanese - his surname meaning "Albanian" in Italian would indicate an Arbereshe origin.

Nonsense. Alba, alban, albano, etc are derived from the Latin Albanus. Latin (and the Romans) predate the people who call themselves Albanians by many centuries.

@@user-er3bx8qb1j Usually people in Italy with the surname "Albanese" are indeed of Albanian-Arbëresh origin.

@user-er3bx8qb1j Albania is not a latin name. Alban or Albanoi was called an illyrian tribe living in Durres area. That is where does the name Albania come from.

I live in US but lived nine years in Italy. Thiis brought back many good memories. Met Arbereshe from Calabria and Piana degli Albanesi in Sicily. They are Catholics but many belong however to the Italo-Albanese Rite - similar to Orthodox.

because they where orthodox greeks... and it was called piana dei greci prior to mussolinis and the popes intervention... they where forced to change confession and have been albanized... the itallians always used Albania as proxy against the Greeks... same as turkey... both want more influence in the eastern mediteranean... this is high chess geopolitics which is going on since the roman era... back in 1870 when the arbaresh people knew what they where they asked greece to accept them back to flee the catholic church opression ... of course greece and kapodistrias accepted them as greeks at that time... thhey who didnt leave accepted to change confession and where brainwashed to a false albanian identity ... Albania didnt exist back then but they where albanized nevertheless. Later italian Nazis used the Albanians and the CHAMS to invade Greece during the WW2 but they lost the war... you Arbaresh need to wake up and start asking some questions to your elders... some of them might know... but most likely those who really know what happened are long gone...

You guys were calling yourself Romans all the way up to the 20th century. Why did it took a Bavarian kind and the Arvanitas population for you people to find your “Hellenic” ancestry? Mussolini is been dead for over 80 years so why are the Arbëreshë still claiming to be from the old Albania and why do they not speak Greek? Can you understand their language, because I can. You modern Greeks, are nothing more than Turks with crosses around your necks. That’s why a lot of you guys look more middle eastern than European in the face. lol

Arbereshe are Albanian. In the video thumbnail it says neither Italian nor Albanian. Arbereshe escaped from Albania to Italy like cowards from the Ottoman Turks. Arbereshe are pure Albanians but cowards.

@@canadian6167 It's total cowardice, arbereshe escaped to Italy, arvanites to Greece and than others converted to Islam. So overall there was a cowardice amongst the Albanian population. From escape to betraying their faith.
