I'm a good looking white man from eastern Europe and I worked as a construction worker across entire Austria. Never in my life have I experienced so much racism and chauvinism like I did in Austria especially the lower parts like Graz and Klagenfurt. I can't even imagine how hard is for black women to be there. Non white people should definitely avoid Austria at all costs.

As a POC living in Vienna and working with kids from different cultural backgrounds, I am just grateful that I didn't grow up here. It's sad that " Where are you from"? Is still one of the first questions but also the amazement in their voices when they state "But you speak German pretty well", almost like they wait for a thank you. It's almost like the most people can't understand that a brown person who didn't grow up in Austria still can fluently speak German with a Viennese accent. Unfortunately, many children grew up here, are here for the 3rd generation but are still seen as the " Turkish/ Serbian/ Bosnian" kid. Even though they grew up here, have an Austrian passport and speak the language fluently. I can say that the representation of POC in media particularly, has improved in the past 10 years. Still people like us need more role models. And also true, people randomly touch your hair as if you're a dog.
@ArianeL

Yes it seems like it they don’t expect a brown/black child to be well spoken. It’s sad. I’m an adult and I regularly get this question. You constantly feel like "the other". As I said I’m an adult I can cope with it now but for children it can be very hard constantly feeling like you don’t belong. Growing up here definitely left some scars. Your work sounds very interesting, if you don’t mind sharing I'd love to hear more. 😊

You two do understand that Austria is a white country? And that white people owe you nothing? Not hair products, explanations or pretending you just blend right in their societies. You don't. You stand out just like whites stand out in Africa and Asia. People in Africa touch blonde people's hair all the fucking time and we don't whine about it. It's called being curious. Blonde women have been kidnapped and sold as exotic sex slaves in Africa and parts of Asia for centuries and you don't hear us whining. All you do is whine about how awful Europe is and yet you never leave. How so? Both of you have an entire continent where you would fit in just fine. I'm fraking white and people are surprised when I speak a language that my ethnicity doesn't normally speak. Again, normal. In Japan people almost cheer when you speak decent Japanese. Same in China with Mandarin. You are not Europeans, you don't look European and it's normal for Europeans to assume you are not from here. Being born in Europe doesn't make any of you Europeans. Being born in Austria doesn't magically make you Germanic. Don't know if you are too stupid to understand such a simple fact or you are whoring for attention playing victims.

I really hate to stereotype one group or country of people but I have been to just about every western European country and Austria was absolutely the worst when it came to racism. I am from Jamaica and I stayed in the Marriott in Vienna, next to a huge park. The first day I was eating in a restaurant and experienced a white woman glaring at me with disdain from another table. I also experienced people putting a large amount of distance while I walked through the city. The worst experience was during a drive to Prague, I had to stop to get a tag to cross the border and also to purchase some drinks and snacks, when I asked for a bag the clerk barked at me and told me to wait till she was finished with everyone else. This was after I paid a little over 100 Euros for the tag and refreshments. I never plan on going back to that country again. Germany was far far better.

I wish people would mind their own business, just don't let these events influence your opinion of those entire nations, as that mentality is no different than that of the people that judged you based on how you look instead of an individual. This primitive side of humans will be something hard to get rid of... Black people in Europe, Asians in Africa, Native A in x and y and z. Ignorant people will always see you based on stereotypes, less important etc if you look different than what they see as "their own" or whatever other bullshit. Stay safe!

@@em4703 Trust me I understand exactly what you are talking about which is why I said I hate to stereotype an entire nation. However, it was shocking as to the volume of events I experienced in Austria and it was every single day that I experienced multiple events. Hi! Thanks for this video, and kudos to you two for speaking up. I’m sorry but My experience given it’s been a short period spent in Vienna, I personally can already tell that the country is riddled with prejudice, ignorance and xenophobia. I’m black and grew up in Ireland but let me just say that all that I’ve uncounted here is passive aggressive licks that makes an immigrant of colour feel out of place. There are many racists countries but for my personal experience Vienna has been the worst. It’s sad as my wife is from Austria and she didn’t even know how (silent)oppression is still a massive thing here. I guess like many other Caucasian Austrian I’ve spoken to about my experiences. They didn’t realize how different of an experience it is if you’re not Caucasian. I know other white folks from other Eastern European countries that experience some discrimination but apparently not to the extent of non-Caucasians do. The “get out of here” looks, the resentment in the people that don’t even want to listen to your opinion on how dated the mentality and how xenophobia is sadly part of the culture. I’m not blaming every single Austrian of course but if the majority takes the cake then the rest have no voice, and clearly the majority is on the wrong side of history and again in my opinion. I’m just saying that allowing little things that people here have accepted as normal isn’t the best way to live. It’s 2019 people, countless people just brush it off and say “a this is Vienna/Austria you will get used to it, just ignore it all, you’ll be fine”, or some other generic dismissive comment but I’m sorry many other countries in Europe are past that and xenophobia isn’t a thing you can just ignore or/and get used to. Here is an example: You wouldn’t say to someone who is going through abuse (no matter how, physical/emotional) that confided in you after they opened up about how destructive the abuser is to just “get used to it. Or just ignore it” ?? I am educated with a great job and I am comfortable because I achieved everything I achieved somewhere where I wasn’t made feel different, or not like my peers, i had equal opportunities and race or nationality was never a topic and if it was, it’ll only happened in a context where it wasn’t to make me feel like an outsider .I always felt equal even though I came from somewhere else, I wouldn’t have the fear of police cause of my colour, I wouldn’t fear for my son’s future, I wouldn’t fear that he feels like he is half black and hence will feel excluded to some extend, if this was all ok to live with. Like you ladies in your video said, unfortunately the media doesn’t acknowledge other races & nationalities. For me that’s sad as a father that knows the importance of equality and see that this can ruin ones self image to a certain extent. I say equality not just in the law, but in the way people treats him on a day to day basis. It also certainly has a terrible psychological hold on those people that actually don’t want to raise attention to what they are going through. Cause it’s like if you chose to come to Austria you gotta respect our culture, let me say something, the culture is respected when it’s reciprocated. Most immigrants here are active member of the society bringing a lot to share but it’s sad to feel shut off and patronized as stereotypes seems to be facts in Austria. One of the worst experiences I’ve encountered is being followed in the train station to the toilets cause I’ve been waiting too long on the train platform, I was threaten with calling the police, for sitting down and waiting for 20mins on the bench. What had happened was that I forgot my wallet and my travel ticket at home and I was waiting for my wife to come drop it. So sitting and waiting on a bench in the train station was a threat apparently???on that particular occasion I was wearing a casual outfit not my business one. I’ve met 3 separate black men that chose to dress formal every time they leave the house as they got tired of being treated like scum and found that it’s an effective way to dress in a business attire as a way of getting less racism. Unfortunately still to this day I can’t even take a public transport commute without having at least one bad experience.Whether if it’s the looks or out straight racist comments. Again as In every country you may find people that act xenophobic and sadly it’s their right to believe in what they want but my concern is the frequency of a xenophobic act happening in Austria. funny enough i tried out the formal attire experiment, and seen the reception I get in public, one word “unbelievable” so if I’m wearing a suit and carrying my laptop and wearing my reading glasses, I get less demeaning looks and i might even have a xenophobia free commute if I’m lucky it’s a little less. I guess the formal attire works. But still not what I should resolve to. I can’t be part of the issue by finding ways of not being a victim of abuse I should report the abuser. Prejudice and xenophobia isn’t the known face of the Austrian culture to the world but I’m sorry to say that it’s sadly the case. I know I come out a bit strong to some about the subject but this is some of my opinion and personal experiences here in Austria. I don’t mean to cause any sort of revolution but I felt need to share with you guys. Thanks for reading and Thanks again for the video.

I was thinking about moving to Austria or Germany for my second year of university. I'm going to avoid Austria. I've dealt with racism before but most people don't give me a second glance on the street. It would be horrible to move somewhere that has racist people just staring at me eating in a restaurant or strolling down the street. Staring too long at people is considered assualt in court for the non informed people (country dependent). Also, I'm use to good grades in an anonymous marking system. If Austrians don't have that, a racist professor could mark me down a few points for no reason. It's so difficult to find a country that has people that will just treat you like everyone else. No staring, no snarky remarks, no violence, no threats. Like life is difficult as it is; do you have to treat me badly because of my skin colour? No.

@Liobi I live in a small village and we have two dark skinned people here, but no one ever was mean to them. On the other hand the people of this village (also these two dark skinned people) were very mean to me. They discriminated me because I spoke austrian German instead of my austro-bavarian dialect (I did this because the upper austrian people wouldn't understand me with my strong west-tyrolean dialect). And of course they always asked me if I am from Germany.

I think the ´where are you from´ is a kind of icebreaker specially in Vienna as the half of the population is coming from abroad or other parts of Austria. My experience is even Austrians in bigger cities are asking each other when they met as 1st question where are you from. If they see some physical difference like skin color ect or they hear an accent they are then asking about the origin of your family. I would not consider it offensive or so, it´s they way to start a conversation I think. Due to my accent I get the question all the time and my Austrian friends are getting the question as well even those who were born in Vienna. Even in Austria born other nationalities like Turkish ect are asking me as 1st question where are u from :-D However I am not black and a woman so I will be never able to understand the struggles what you folks have to deal with but I do believe its happening so lets try to change it together ;-) and I have to say I am happy how you shared with us the positives and the negatives as well. ;-) Liebe Grüsse P.S. I dont understand how this nice video shifted the comments to two extremes, 1 Austria is racist, 2 Austria is absolutely not racist. The real situation is, yes there can be racist people in Austria as everywhere but in general the people are nice. The country is in general very open minded towards minorities (cultural, sexual....) . We have to mention as well that the so called ´illegal´ immigration specially during the last decades, the problems between minorities and with groups of people who do not want to integrate to the society(I saw a lot of such people even coming from my country after 5 years not speaking a word of German, there is a group of my countrymen screaming on the Mariahilferstrasse in my language taking drugs living from Austrian social money and not speaking a word German) are not helping too but if the Austrians will see you are a good person who shows interest for their culture and language you will have definitely a great time here people.

Never herd of Arabella Kiesbauer? OK, she was the only one for quite some time. In Germany it was similar: The only famous PoC member was Charles M. Huber playing a police detective in "Der Alte" and later becoming polititian. Recently it changed a bit, but what to expect from countries after most intense rassistic genocide in history. Till 1990 there have been just almost none except families from GIs. Also the fact that colonialism ended somehow already in 1918 in Germany and Austria made PoC a very small group in these countries. Its changing now, but slowly. I wonder when we will see first PoC skiing racer or ski jumper from Austria at the Olympics. If Glaciers survive long enough this might happen within our lifetime.

Thank you for the video, Ariane. I think that if I had seen it exactly a year ago I would have really had a larger bout of "stress obsess" than I did prior to my trip to Vienna from California last January. I was only in town for six days as the purpose of my trip was to attend the Ärzteball and the Jägerball and I am a woc. I 'd been doing Viennese Waltz for about a year prior and I wanted to attend a Viennese ball, having followed them on KZbin. I learned the whole Fledermaus Quadrille, including the chant they sing in Part 6 and the Galopp on KZbin as well. I chose Ärzteball because I'd seen Black debutantes in the 2013 and 2014 balls, and chose Jägerball because I needed a second ball to attend as my flight home was leaving the following morning. I had a Viennese dance partner courtesy of a taxi dance service as I have no acquaintances or friends in Austria, and he was a very cool person who was an SPÖ member (I was able to relax immediately after hearing that). I had been following Austrian politics ever since that Dec. 4, 2016 election when Van der Bellen defeated Hofer and I saw the big crowds in the Heldenplatz with signs reading, "Kein Nazis in Hofburg" and ""Gott sei dank". I wasn't thinking about the October, 2017 election in Austria, and when Kurz won and stated his intention of forming a government with the FPÖ I began to panic. I began to worry that my dance partner might also be FPÖ and racist, etc. After arriving in Vienna and walking around the First District I had noted some anti-FPÖ and pro-Antifa graffiti on the buildings between my hotel on Parkring and Stefansplatz, and I didn't see any racist graffiti. Fortunately nothing negative happened to me during my six day stay, and as I said before my dance partner was an SPÖ member and progressive. Kurz, Strache, and Kickl were at the Jägerball and they exited the Festsaal past where my partner and I were standing, but fortunately they probably couldn't see me because I'm short and there were many tall people standing in front of me. At both balls, but especially Ärzteball, I saw poc who were mostly Black/bi-racial women and Asians; fewer Black women at Jägerball.What I wanted to ask you about was a story I saw in an on-line journal called, "The Local" which prints Austrian news stories, and those from other EU countries as well, for an American audience. The story concerned ORF's decision to pull a TV documentary on Vienna's Black population and the discrimination they faced for reworking, replacing it with a documentary on wine taverns. Has the reworked documentary been shown yet? I'd love to know what was in it. BTW, I consider both of you ladies to be Austrian. Stay strong and continue to walk in beauty.

@@idnwiw :I apologize for the very late reply. I really enjoyed the balls and I did dance until dawn. The entire experience I will count as one of the high points of my life because it was something that I had wanted to do for decades before I saw the real thing on KZbin. Pre-KZbin I had only seen still photos or scenes from movies. I also had to wait for retirement to make the trip in January as I was a teacher in a large American school district. There would have been serious issues about my taking a week off almost immediately after returning from Christmas/Winter Break.

@@Flex2212: Regarding Jägerball, I was searching for a ball that would present a different cultural focus with everyone wearing trachten, and that would be held before my departure date which was later the same morning after the ball had ended (yes, I stayed for the final Viennese waltz to, "Blue Danube", a Polka to, "Radetzsky March", and the down-tempo waltz to, "Brüderlein Fein", at both balls). I had also seen (KZbin) the 2017 Jägerball's break-dancing troupe in Lederhosen and it was wild, but that was before the advent of the new government. In 2018 I sensed that there were a lot of FPÖ types present, but I reasoned after awhile that they probably knew that I was an American tourist and wouldn't bother me in an aggressive way, if at all. Also, I had my dance partner who was explaining the goings on, the hunter's jewelry worn by the women, the apparent hunting calls being played on those horns, and the regionalism extant in some of the trachten, etc. Interest in Austria had been there for some time. I'm a consumer of classical music and used to play cello when I was in school. I also had some training in ballet as a child. Before the pandemic I used to annually attend opera performances, not only in my home city but occasionally in others around the U.S., including the Met in NYC. I also enjoyed watching foreign language films and used to attend film festivals in the 1970's. Fortunately I live in a large city with several cinemas that show independent and foreign language films, but they are now victims of the pandemic. I'd visited Austria twice: 1974 during my first real trip abroad as part of a multi-country tour, and again in 2001 on a day trip to Salzburg from Munich. Each time I was in a different part of the country. 2018 was my first trip to the eastern part of the country with my visit to Vienna.

The turkish people in Austria outnumber the official austrian minorities (slovenes, slovakians, czech, burgenlandcroatians, hungarians) by far. The problem with them (and not with the syrians, kurdish,...) is that they tend to create "slums". They only settle at places where large amounts of turkish already live and most of them can't or barely speak German. One of my "turkish" friends said, that he always thought he lives in Turkey and not in Austria, because his neighbors where Turks, the shops in his block where all Turkish, his family watched just Turkish TV,...There are even more muslim people in Austria nowadays than e.g. lutherian protestants, even though the lutherian religious group has a longer history in Austria. I work in a hospital and like 40% of the patients here can't speak German at all and another 20% can speak it a little bit. When a new patient arrives, we try to figure out if he/she can speak German and if he/she doesn't (and obviously speaks turkish), we put him/her in a room, where at least one patient can speak a little bit of German (and is a turk), so we can communicate with all of them (and no, most of them aren't able to speak english either). The worst situation I can remember was when there were a turkish woman (only turkish), a serbian woman (only serbo-croatian and a little bit of turkish) and a slovene woman (Slovene and German, both very well) in one room and we had to communicate with the slovene woman, who tried to communicate with the serbian woman (which wasn't easy because slovene and serbian are related, but not the same language), who tried to communicate with the turkish woman. I am a male nurse and therefore I was afraid to enter the room, because when the Turkish wife's husband was there, he was always very aggressive towards me and the communication took a while. One day the slovene woman wanted to talk to me in private. She said that the Turkish woman can speak German, but she just doesn't want it, because she feels superior to the Austrians. The refugees aren't the problem, many of them are very nice and polite. Even though I hate our right-wing government, I do not agree with the term nazi. Nazism is illegal in Austria and if they were nazis, they would have been arrested. Our government is right wing, they try to destroy our beloved social-state to help the rich. They are just dirty capitalists like the Americans.

Thank you for posting this video. I am from the USA and I have dark skin and I have been living in Vienna for less than a year, I am very surprised how awful people can be in Austria. The looks and the comments. The first questions is always “Where are you from?” And when I say USA, they look confused then they ask me “But where originally are you from?” WHAT? I have never had any one asked me that question. Also, why are there no black people on TV? Scratch that, all other ethnicities are not represented any where. Which is very strange for such a big city in Europe. Seriously! What is wrong with Austrians?

T. Ziko thank you for sharing your experience! 🙏🏾 They ask this question bc for a lot of them think you can’t be "Austrian" or in your case "American" when you have dark skin you have to be from Africa...this mindset is disturbing. Oh yeah no representation AT ALL! It’s sad but it already starts with like the local beauty pageants you would never see a asian, black or arab woman win this type of contest and it follows with the Austrian media. The beauty standard here is blonde hair and blue eyes.. What has brought you here, if I may ask?

How do you expect someone who doesn't know u from Adam, who has not seen your type b4 in his/her life to welcome u immediately with open arms???? Even among ourselves blacks, this is not possible! We need to earn their love and respect, working our way into their hearts! How? love the people, learn and speak their language, adapt, accept and respect their culture, be kind and respectful, and realize that earning their trust and love is a slow process, so be patient! After all these, will there still be bad people behaving badly to you? yes! just like in every other place on earth! But most hearts will have melted towards you by the time you apply these steps!

If you are born in that county that’s where you are from and no one has the right to question that or push u to claim another country that you’ve never been to as your own.

Austrians can keep Austria. I was there twice for a fly over and people were giving evil looks with no justification or provocation at all. I could understand if i was loud and being obnoxious, but that was not the case at all. Not to mention every black person I saw there, which was no more than 5 in total, looked genuinely concerned that I was there at all. (P.S. I only visited the Airport and the large mall in Vienna, I wouldn’t dare venture any further in a place that made me feel that uncomfortable) I hate to write off an entire country cause only half the people I encountered seemed bothered by me, but c’mon man that’s a lot.

Tütenbratwurst I grew up with those kind of people of course there are some who ask just out of curiosity but a lot of them ask because the simply answer that I'm Austrian is not enough for them..that’s my experience growing up as a black female here in Austria
@Leo-uu8du
@Leo-uu8du 5 жыл бұрын
@@ArianeL why is being a female important in this answer? Austrians always ask were someone else comes from, it has nothing to do with being black or a female (or a black female, I guess). They usually ask that question if you speak with an accent or too close too standard German (Viennese is just standard German with accent). The austrians love their own language and when they hear you speak in perfect dialect, they know that you are one of them. I think the whole "ask somebody where he/she is from, even though he/she already said he/she is from austria" is a relict of the old monarchy. Austria was huge and everyone was alowed to settle everywhere in the empire. It was important to the people to know if somebody is a slovakian viennese, a czech upper austrian, a "german" czech... People were proud of their heritage and it was normal to ask other people about theirs. I am always getting asked if I am a German and my usual answer is: "no, I am Tyrolean, but I have roots in Poland and Scandinavia". After that, most people are very impressed and start to talk about their family history, job, hobbies,... It's just a normal way to start a conversation in Austria and has nothing to do with racism. (Not wanting to talk to you would be racist)

@Leo-uu8du
@Leo-uu8du 4 жыл бұрын
@The Slavic World of Weles from Navia Indo-European is just a linguistic term. It's an artificial language that might or might not be spoken by some farmers in Asia thousands of years ago. Indo btw. stands for the Indian-peninsula, because those languages are spread from India to Europe. Indians are neither culturally nor genetically closer to Europeans than Semites or others (Persian, which is spoken in Iran, is also a Indo-European language and those people have a very arabic influenced culture and also the other way round) Also most Europeans are heavily mixed with other people around the world and most Jewish lived in Europe for a long time and even developed their own indo-european languages like Yiddish (which is German based) and it would be arrogant to say that they didn't mix genetically either.

This country can be incredibly cruel to those that it considers "Outsiders". I am admittedly a white austrian man, but for some reason god hates me so he gave me autism. Gave me years of severe childhood bullying, both in school but even from relatives. I have always been the weird kid who didn't really have any friends until high school. Ok, I was weird, but still... even at the age of 21 years I am still often the odd one out. Now I am not trying to compare black people to autistic people so please don't take this as some form of insult. I am just trying to relate the experience. Because I know that a lot of people will say that "Oh racism doesn't exist in Austria, everyone is so nice to each other!" And like...I have seen the cruel side of this society. People can be sooo evil when they want to. And sure most people are nice, or at least try to be. But there are some really messed up things about our society that need to be addressed more and not always swept under the rug, because it hurts some people's pride.

I experienced more racism in that semester than my entire life in Australia, and to add to that a lot of Austrians are straight up rude, they're just nasty to you for no reason. What I found funny though was all the advertisements about Austria said that it was a diverse and multicultural society. I didn't really see that. There was a lot of other Europeans (Serbians, Croatians etc.) and Turks but not many Asians, Africans and other ethnic groups. In fact, the diversity and Asian food in Australia was one of the things I missed most when I was away.

Very interesting, I grew up not knowing my grandmother had Austrian ancestry. They left Europe because of political beliefs about absolute monarchs or got swept by power seeking individuals to make money out of colony resources in America. Ended up losing cultural identity to assimilate as English in 1717 Virginia Colony. I lived close to Mexico with a majority Latino population and just had one African American girl in class when I was kindergartener to 3rd grade. Unfortunately she has since died when she was in her twenties from an infection caught at a spa. Very vibrant person and will be missed. She had unique hair products to others but I assumed being very small that was her cultural heritage. As an adult, that Austrian teacher was missing some vitality or life to address concern to you without first asking another teacher or parent. Too much war can affect countries. Shocked to learn Arnold Schwarzenegger say they had only a small wash vanity that was filled for his parents and himself and brother by the kids of the family each day back in 1950s. In Roman times they had "plumbing" via aquaducts. Lot of energy for cleanliness and styling was lost. I read that South African countries would trade with Europe and they had great metal working skills to produce Renaissance style bronze statues. Hope Austrian people can connect with guardian angels to not work so hard on own power. Best wishes on your channel and friendships.
