I'm from Jamaica as well now living in the US. Due to the blatant racism here I'm on the search for another country to call home, especially because not my 2 young daughters. It's so disgusting that every country I research I have to look into the experience of black people in that country and always the case, racism. It's disgusting because white people visit black countries all over this world and they are not generally treated bad because they are white. Growing up in Jamaica it was common place to see whites but I never knew what racism was until I moved to America. Not all whites are racist but as a people they really need to do better.

America is a large country, if you find the US racist then you will not find a single country out there that is less racist short of majority black places. Visiting a country is also completely different than staying, most do not care if you're a tourist and you shouldn't care either if you're there temporarily to look around in regards to what people perceive you as. When you try to settle down then native people take issue, they simply do not want you there, whether you'll cause trouble or not is not relevant, they don't want to take any chances. Too often large populations of some demographic move in, do not assimilate, and slowly erode the native culture, the Swiss know this. I don't care what someone looks like so long as they have good morals and are willing to embrace the native culture of the land they settle in. Living in the armpit of america I've been exposed to every possible culture especially black american culture and I do not have positive things to say about most of them.

You can’t escape prejudices. It’s a global behavior. My African friend experienced prejudice by an African American in Texas USA who made fun of her hair and the fact that she had a Zulu (Bantu) last name…. Shocking, disgusting and a fellow black person against an African. You can’t escape this, you can only sharpen your capacity to manage how foolish people react. Humans see threat to what’s different… it’s up to us to educate people. I make it a habit to teach people. I also get goofy comments by some Americans “for a person from. Africa, you speak English very well”😳 in my head I wanna say no shit Sherlock ….. problem is poverty is leveraged as a tool to generate money for all these non profits who aggressively spend on marketing on TV which gives skewed impressions of those nations. Every country has it’s different social classes. Most people only see the poorest of the developing countries and assume it’s the whole country. Poverty porn tourism is also something people can’t stand.

I'm Asian, studied here for 12 years. I don't think I will ever feel fully welcome here. Even teachers can be racist. So many of my foreign friends experienced racism here sadly. But not all Swiss are racist. My best friend is Swiss and she's very open-minded! :)

Very Sorry to hear that. I'm Swiss, and i can imagine, people in the older generation being racist . I think most of the young people can speak english, and are also much more open to other cultures, thats why its just normal not to be racist. I was always the only Swiss in my friend group. All my friends are from other countries, or half Swiss.

@@xdlol59 Most of the time not. I dont think there is more racism here, then for example in Germany. Some of them may have the view, that foreigners take the job, of Swiss people away. But thats a minority, from what ive seen.

I'm from Texas and I did my Peace Corps Training in the early 1990s in St. Lucia before heading to St. Vincent and I had a culture shock to be in places where literally everybody was black. On the first day of training, two local St. Lucian women pointed at me and another trainee (also black) and said "...look, black Americans..." It was really different. I live in Switzerland now, but I had been Living and working in Germany for some time, so I got used to Switzerland with ease.

@@chidijoseph6698 If you are are an EU person, it's not difficult to come to Switzerland, but for other people you probably need to get a job here.

@@chidijoseph6698 Some more Detail: if you are like me and did not get your medical education in Switzerland or the EU, you have to take some Special steps to get it recognized in Switzerland to work as a doctor here. For instance, I had to prove that my medical education and Degree conforms to EU norms and for that I got the letter of conformity from an organization in Germany called DIMDI (German Institute for Medical Documentation and Information (German: Deutsches Institut für Medizinische Dokumentation und Information). This was only possible because I had worked in Germany before and had already gone through the steps to get a medical License there. Specifically for doctors, you will also have to Show proof that you have a higher level certification in one of the official Swiss Languages such as French, German or Italian. For example I have the C1 certification in German. Ok, I hope this helps. It seems as if you are very forgiving and that’s wonderful. However, what you’ve described and experienced is racism. It’s ok to call it what it is. Not having experience with a group doesn’t excuse bad behavior or mistreatment or make it not racism. There’s a wealth of information in this world and those who care enough can unlearn racist ideology even if they don’t know people of a group personally. You should never have to experience the things you have described. EVER. I hope that as people recognize the gravity of their actions they will change for better. I think the worse thing a person can do is to feel the need to prove yourself to a person who has a perception or box of you. Ignorance is bliss and doesn’t have a color. If they cannot except that you are a human with god given rights, then that’s not fear, that’s judgment. We should never teach black children they have to be smarter than others because that makes the child think there’s something wrong with them and it’s just our own crooked knowledge. -Thanks Baba Gregory

Thanks very much for your video. I'm an African living in Switzerland and I can relate on many levels. I especially love your idea of trying to understand the other party before jumping into conclusions (e.g they are racist etc). Many people (sometimes understandably) won't have that much patience and quickly label people without trying to understand where they come from. Personally I've had a very positive experience in Switzerland (French speaking canton), and I hope it stays that way.

I am an American-born and -trained, doctor, MD & PhD, from California, USA, and am of indian heritage. I had to go to Switz. for official work, and teach at a hospital, .... and stay for over 6 months, mostly at US Govt expense. This was my experience... living a short term sojourn in that country.... , The Swiss both in the Germanic and the French speaking areas .... I found to be, incredibly rude and very terse and uptight, and Racist ... . unless they know you personally at work, .... or they are dealing with you as a tourist. ...... Then they are, I presume, fairly nice. But certainly not a good country to live in, for foreigners !!@@!@@ ... Whether you speak the languages, OR not ....

Thank you for sharing. As Swiss it was a interesting to watch and I am happy that you don't seem bitter about your experience and you still like Switzerland. It is funny that you say in Jamaica you had the same prejudice about Africa as we have - I can still rember how they told us in religion class in school that we should save up our money during lent time instead of spending it for candy, so we could donate it to the poor and hungry kids in Africa. About the job search: For foreigners, it seems that they can only compete in either low qualified jobs (like cleaning) and the topshot positions (PhD/Research/Management in the Financial or Chemical/Pharma Industry). For the good jobs for "normal" people it is quite difficult. You usually need good connections, e.g. someone recommending you. Many job openings are not even published, the hiring is done purely by recommendations. I am a Swiss citizen and white, but I have Italien/Ticino roots, so I could be mistaken for a foreigner. As a student, I did a lot of different jobs, including cashier in the supermarket, security and room cleaning (fields were there are generally speaking a lot of foreigners) and I have to say that people did judge me as well (mainly due to the job I was doing) and I know it is painful. Some people will assume that you are stupid, just judging from the job you are currently doing. Like if you work in a supermarket, you can't be that bright...

There is a reason why Switzerland always makes it to the top 10 list of places to live. They are racist, and don't allow minorities to come in and destroy the place like we do here in the US. All black cities are ghettos. It's a fact. I would prefer to live in a predominantly white area than black area. You are free to call me racist all you want. Look around, check crime statistics. Swiss people are smart, and they even care about their animals...no strays. I hope they stay just the way they are and not let 'diversity' ruin such a beautiful place.

Switzerland is not an easy country. Swiss are extremely disciplined and expect the same from others. Every single point she classifies into boxes - can be used by anybody - gender, race, nationality, political orientation, sexual orientation - or the local Kantoenligeist (not born in this village) - and claim that they are exposed to these boxes because of their personal features. She is waving the race card - why not the gender card on top of it. Do you ever hear such comments from Chinese?

Actually the opposite. I grew up in a country where there are no black people and then moved to the UK. I had no pre conceived views. I always treat people the same and try to get to know them first. I had the worst experience with black women bullies and racists especially Indian. So much so I was thinking to return to my country. It makes me sick how you pretend to be victims of racism when some of you are the worst racists and full of envy. You even steal other people identities and call yourself French and Swedish when those are distinct ethnic groups . Not to talk about wearing wigs to copy the hair of White women. I feel like I should make a video of my own to talk about black racists and my horrible experience

Why move to a racist country. Vast majority of countries in this world have no white people living in them. Why would you go somewhere only to be oppressed . So many Africans risking their lives to cross borders illegally and enter Europe only to be faced with racism and oppression. I was actually recruited to come and work in Switzerland, so employment was never an issue. People from other countries have told me that they have problems especially if they they aren't fluent in whichever language.

Plus, lack of daycare is a serious struggle for parents... I know. But at least the Kindergarten my son attended was open until 4:30 without closing in the middle of the day at lunchtime. As for social life, I find both ok.

I (british born, swiss raised and educated, white) have watched a couple of being black in switzerland videos. So far yours was the best. You're introduction was brilliant. Although i can get a bit defensive when it comes to criticism of switzerland in general, i had no issues with your criticism. You came across very sincere and the criticisms are consistent with swiss characteristics... I my humble opinion. Would like to see more videos from you on the topic.

I lived in Germany from June 2021 to Oct 2022 and I experienced this as well. I've thought about trying my hand in Switzerland, but it sounds like it is all of Europe. I mean they still have colonies in Africa so what do we really expect? Thanks for sharing.

As a (former?) South African, I do get confronted/reminded occasionally for not being "like them" directly or usually indirectly. And less occasionally: that I'll never be, as there's no real place to "go back" to: I was already born outside of a country where I appear to be coming from anyway. As for walking with things without receipt in another shop, I do get reminded that people can wonder "how come". So far, I just see shopkeepers coming close as being eager to see things. I just say hello and say I'm looking around... As for jobs, it's not only in Switzerland where foreigners are overqualified for their jobs. I've recently left one country after 10 years, as I didn't feel it to be my place. Over there, people appeared uncaring and cold to anyone they didn't know, it hadn't necessarily to do with me in particular, I believe. Still, I don't believe it's a way how to live or treat someone. Swiss are also very reserved, I heard, so I don't know: often only become friends with people they grew up with... I still have to figure out if and how I'll cope with it. I can still leave if I want, one advantage of a nomadic lifestyle is that it's at least are more comfortable moving to more favourable places...

I am Jamaican, was schooled in the Uk and lived in Switzerland during the 90s. The boxes you spoke about are everywhere, not only in Switzerland - you can even find them in Jamaica. It’s all to do with ignorance.

I was thinking of moving there but I dont want to live in such a racist country, and I've been reading some horrible things online about switzerland's dealings with non-white peoples. It's definately racism too. I know, you couldn't understand unless you are black or lived in our skin. You can be a well dressed white person & no one would be suspicious or "profile" you. Black pple are followed & profiled no matter how they dress. Even the famous Oprah Winfrey got profiled in Europe. Things are much better in England - the most diverse European country but they too still have some racial issues.
